a Master <strong>of</strong> Early Childhood Education<br />
degree at Armstrong Atlantic<br />
State University in Georgia.<br />
Vivian Douglas (M.M., 1988, french<br />
horn), student <strong>of</strong> Richard Solis, is working<br />
at an orphanage in Guatemala<br />
teaching music to all elementary<br />
grades as well as supervising the band<br />
program that she started there in 2001.<br />
Her main focus is working with a group<br />
<strong>of</strong> 12 students in the performing arts.<br />

the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra for<br />
their recent Northeast tour and<br />
Carnegie Hall concert.<br />

Presbyterian Church in New York<br />
City. Jeff Phelps (B.M., 1999, cello,<br />
M.M., 2002, orchestral conducting) and<br />
Jae Lee (M.M., 2002, violin) served as<br />
conductor and violinist for the performance.<br />
Eight CIM alumni were present<br />
in the audience.<br />
Carla Leurs (A.C., 2002, violin), student<br />
<strong>of</strong> David Updegraff and David<br />
Cerone, won fourth prize at the<br />
Gyeongnam International <strong>Music</strong> Competition<br />
2004. Last year, Julie Albers<br />
(Young Artist Program, 1996, B.M.,<br />
2001, cello) won first prize in the cello<br />
edition. In the final round, Carla performed<br />
Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto<br />
with the Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra.<br />
Carla also performed in the Artist<br />
International Debut Series at Carnegie<br />
Hall in New York in February. Upcoming<br />
concerts include return engagements<br />
to Russia with the Chamber Orchestra<br />
<strong>of</strong> Vologda, a recital in St. Petersburg<br />
in the “New Master’s on<br />
Tour” series, and concerts in Switzerland<br />
and the Netherlands.<br />
Dan Lippel (B.M., 1998, M.M., 1999,<br />
guitar), student <strong>of</strong> John Holmquist and<br />
Jason Vieaux, released a CD, “Resonance,”<br />
in January <strong>2005</strong>. The CD includes<br />
premiere recordings <strong>of</strong> several<br />
works, including Ricochet for guitar<br />
and electronics by Peter Gilbert<br />
(M.M., 2001, composition), as well as<br />
versions <strong>of</strong> guitar music by Elliott<br />
Carter and <strong>Mar</strong>io Davidovsky. Dan recently<br />
toured Japan and Europe with<br />
indie rock group Mice Parade,<br />
Bubblecore Records recording artists.<br />
His performances this season include<br />
recitals for the Trinity Church Noontime<br />
Concerts in New York, on Bowling<br />
Green State University’s “<strong>Music</strong> from<br />
the Forefront,” and appearances at<br />
Oberlin Conservatory, Princeton and<br />
Harvard Universities. Dan will perform<br />
in a concert celebrating the music <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Mar</strong>io Davidovsky at Columbia College<br />
Chicago with the ICE ensemble.<br />

1996, voice), student<br />
<strong>of</strong> Beverley<br />
Rinaldi, was recently<br />
featured in<br />
the Detroit Jewish<br />
News, where she<br />
discussed a production<br />
about her paternal<br />
grandfather,<br />
<strong>Mar</strong>kowicz Philip <strong>Mar</strong>kowicz.<br />
His memoir as a<br />
Holocaust survivor and Torah scholar<br />
will be performed as a theater piece,<br />
“Tikvah.” Andrea will also perform at<br />
Bowling Green State University on<br />
April 26.<br />
Theodore (Ted) Nelson (M.M., 1997,<br />
cello), student <strong>of</strong> Alan Harris, joined<br />
the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra this<br />
past fall. He and his wife are expecting<br />
their first child.<br />
Gary Olmstead (D.M.A., 1976, percussion),<br />
student <strong>of</strong> Cloyd Duff, recently<br />
received the Lifetime Achievement in<br />
Education Award from the Percussive<br />
Arts Society, an international organization<br />
<strong>of</strong> more than 8,000 members.<br />
Dr. Olmstead retired in <strong>May</strong> 2003 after<br />
serving for 37 years as director <strong>of</strong> percussion<br />
studies at Indiana University<br />
<strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania.<br />
G. Andrew Rozsa (M.M., 2003, bass<br />
trombone), student <strong>of</strong> Thomas Klaber,<br />
was appointed bass trombonist <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Dubuque Symphony Orchestra in<br />
Dubuque, Iowa. He also received appointment<br />
as composer-in-residence for<br />
the Albuquerque Public Schools Combined<br />
Youth Orchestra for the 2004-<br />
<strong>2005</strong> school year.<br />
Jonathan Ruckman (B.M., 2002,<br />
M.M., 2003, cello), student <strong>of</strong> Stephen<br />
Geber, won an assistant principal position<br />
with the Louisiana Philharmonic<br />
Orchestra.<br />
Ronald Sat (A.D., 1997, D.M.A., 2003,<br />
accompanying), student <strong>of</strong> Anne<br />
Epperson and Anita Pontremoli, made<br />
his Lincoln Center Great Performers<br />
debut with 18 year-old violinist<br />
<strong>May</strong>uko Kamio in a sold-out concert at<br />
the Walter Reade Theater on January<br />
30, <strong>2005</strong>. The program included the<br />
world premiere <strong>of</strong> Akio Yasuraoka's<br />
Confluenza per violino e piano.<br />
Chien Tan (B.M., 1993, violin), student<br />
<strong>of</strong> David Cerone and David Updegraff,<br />
is principal second violin <strong>of</strong> the Oregon<br />
Symphony. She has released a self-produced<br />
music video, “Vivaldi Goldfinch,”<br />
that features her playing the treble violin.<br />

<strong>of</strong> the San Diego<br />
Symphony. He<br />
also served as guest<br />
concertmaster with<br />
the Seattle Symphony<br />
Orchestra<br />

Matthew Young, former viola student<br />
<strong>of</strong> Robert Vernon, has won a position<br />
in the viola section <strong>of</strong> the Minnesota<br />
Orchestra.
