Ensemble News<br />

Shan-shan Sun (B.M., 1995, M.M., 1999, piano), student <strong>of</strong> Paul Schenly, Anne<br />

Epperson and Chengzong Yin; and Per Tengstrand, winner <strong>of</strong> the 1997 <strong>Cleveland</strong><br />

International Piano Competition, plan to marry in <strong>Mar</strong>ch. They met at CIM when<br />

they were practicing in the same corridor. Mr. Tengstrand was visiting for the<br />

Piano Competition and Ms. Sun was a graduate student. They became the<br />

Tengstrand-Sun Duo in January 2002.<br />

The Merling Trio, Ensemble-in-Residence at the School <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Music</strong>, Western Michigan University, includes Susan<br />

Wiersma Uchimura, piano (B.M., 1985, theory); Renata<br />

Artman Knific, violin (A.D., 1982, violin); and Bruce<br />

Uchimura, cello (A.D., 1983, M.M., 1983, cello). The Trio<br />

also serves as faculty members at ENCORE School for<br />

Strings. Their new recording, featuring works by<br />

Piazzolla and Proto, will be released by Centaur Records<br />

in the spring. Tom Knific (B.M., 1982, double bass) will<br />

perform with the Trio in Iowa; Hart and Grayling,<br />

Michigan; and Reno, Nevada during the current season.<br />

The Merling Trio The Kashii Quartet, a student quartet comprised <strong>of</strong><br />

violinists Nathan Olson, student <strong>of</strong> William Preucil, and<br />

Aaron Requiro, student <strong>of</strong> David Updegraff; violist<br />

Jessica Oudin, student <strong>of</strong> Jeffrey Irvine; and cellist<br />

David Requiro, student <strong>of</strong> Richard Aaron, has been<br />

invited to participate in the <strong>2005</strong> International Chamber<br />

<strong>Music</strong> Workshop at <strong>Music</strong>@Menlo, a summer festival and<br />

concert series directed by pianist Wu Han and David<br />

Finckel, cellist <strong>of</strong> the Emerson String Quartet. The Kashii<br />

Quartet will receive coachings from the Emerson,<br />

Borromeo, St. Lawrence, Miami and Miró Quartets,<br />

among others, and will be featured in several performances<br />

throughout the San Francisco area. The program<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers a three-week immersion in the chamber works <strong>of</strong><br />

Beethoven. Ten gifted and highly motivated musicians were chosen by international<br />

audition to work on a daily basis with the festival’s renowned artist faculty<br />

in an intensive exploration <strong>of</strong> the Beethoven string quartets, piano trios, and<br />

sonatas for violin, cello, and piano, as well as works by Brahms, Schumann, and<br />

composers <strong>of</strong> the 20th century. Additionally, the Quartet has been invited to serve<br />

as the ensemble-in-residence at the <strong>2005</strong> Innsbrook <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>Music</strong> Festival from<br />

June 3-12, where they will be teaching as well as performing.<br />

The Miró Quartet accepts the <strong>Cleveland</strong><br />

Quartet Award<br />

The Miró Quartet received the <strong>2005</strong><br />

<strong>Cleveland</strong> Quartet Award, a biennial<br />

honor conferred by Chamber <strong>Music</strong><br />

America to identify, honor and promote<br />

a rising young quartet. Quartet members<br />

are Joshua Gindele, cello; John<br />

Largess, viola; Sandy Yamamoto<br />

(B.M., 1996, M.M., 1998, violin), student<br />

<strong>of</strong> Donald Weilerstein and David<br />

Cerone; and Daniel Ching (M.M., 1998,<br />

violin), student <strong>of</strong> Donald Weilerstein.<br />

The CIM New <strong>Music</strong> Ensemble will<br />

present a concert on April15 <strong>of</strong> some<br />

<strong>of</strong> the country’s finest composers. Directed by <strong>Mar</strong>garet Brouwer and conducted<br />

by composition graduate assistant Gilbert Galindo, the following works will be<br />

performed: Light for soprano, harpsichord, flute, clarinet, violin, cello and percussion<br />

by <strong>Mar</strong>garet Brouwer, featuring soloist <strong>Mar</strong>y Mackenzie, student <strong>of</strong> Beverley<br />

Rinaldi; Soul for string quartet and pipa player by Zhou Long; Chamber Symphony<br />

for chamber orchestra by John Adams and Ritual Incantations for cello and chamber<br />

orchestra by Augusta Read Thomas, featuring cellist Michael DeBruyn,<br />

student <strong>of</strong> Richard Aaron. Zhou Long, who was in residence at CIM during the fall<br />

semester, returns for the concert. He will present a Symposium on Saturday, April<br />

16 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. that will be open to the public. He will also conduct<br />

master classes with CIM student composers. Joining the New <strong>Music</strong> Ensemble for<br />

this concert will be well-known pipa player, New Yorker Min Xiao-fen, for Zhou<br />

Long’s Soul and CIM harpsichordist Janina Ceaser for Brouwer’s Light.<br />

Two Decades<br />

<strong>of</strong> Excellence<br />

The Cavani String Quartet recently<br />

celebrated its 20th anniversary. In<br />

case you weren’t aware, Cavani has<br />

been the Quartet-in-Residence at<br />

CIM since 1988. Members (below, left<br />

to right) <strong>Mar</strong>i Sato (violin), Annie<br />

Fullard (violin), Merry Peckham<br />

(cello) and Kirsten Docter (viola)<br />

are familiar faces around campus,<br />

but they are also known around<br />

the world.<br />

careers as members <strong>of</strong> the Maia,<br />

Biava, Miró, Cypress and Fry Street<br />

Quartets and have been top prize<br />

winners in the Coleman, Fisch<strong>of</strong>f,<br />

Banff and Naumburg Competitions.<br />

The Cavani String Quartet has also<br />

participated as visiting artists at<br />

Interlochen Arts Camp, Madeline<br />

Island <strong>Music</strong> Festival, Kneisel Hall,<br />

Yale Summer School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> and Art<br />

at Norfolk, Britt Arts Training Program<br />

and Allegheny Summer <strong>Music</strong><br />

Festival, Perlman <strong>Music</strong> Program and<br />

ENCORE School for Strings. They<br />

have performed at the Carnegie Hall<br />

Centennial Series and Alice Tully Hall<br />

in New York, the Corcoran Gallery <strong>of</strong><br />

Art and Kennedy Center in Washington,<br />

D.C., the Ambassador Series in<br />

Los Angeles, Muziekcentrum De<br />

Ijsbreker in Amsterdam, and Festival<br />

de L’Epau in France, to name a few.<br />

The Quartet has been described by<br />

engrossing, powerful and elegant.”<br />

The Quartet’s members have been<br />

featured on National Public Radio’s<br />

“Performance Today” and seen on<br />

NBC, CBS, ABC and PBS television.<br />

Collaborations with distinguished<br />

artists include Itzhak Perlman,<br />

Michela Petri, Anton Nel, Benita<br />

Valente and members <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Juilliard, <strong>Cleveland</strong> and Emerson<br />

String Quartets.
