All applications for enrolments in courses leading to the degree<br />

<strong>of</strong> Master by research or by publication or Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy<br />

should be addressed to the Registrar.<br />

Copies <strong>of</strong> the Statutes for the degree <strong>of</strong> Master by research and<br />

by publication and PhD are set out on pages IT1 3-15.<br />

Student Administration Office<br />

The Student Administration Office provides information for<br />

students on admissions, enrolment and examinations regulations<br />

and procedures. Other functions include the processing,<br />

maintenance and storage <strong>of</strong> students' academic records and<br />

personal details.<br />

A more detailed description <strong>of</strong> the various enrolment and<br />

examinations regulations and procedures is outlined below.<br />

Location and <strong>of</strong>fice hours<br />

The Student Adrnlnistration Office is located in Room AD109,<br />

Administration Building (AD), John Street, opposite the Business<br />

and Arts Building (BA) and the Library. (See map inside<br />

back cover.)<br />

Office hours are as follows:<br />

During teaching weeks<br />

8.30am - 6.30pm Monday to Thursday<br />

8.30am - 5.00pm Friday<br />

During non-teaching weeks<br />

9.00am - 5.00pm Monday to Friday<br />

Note:The Office is closed on public holidays<br />

Academic statements<br />

1. Students in SIT receive automatically the following records<br />

<strong>of</strong> their academic progress:<br />

(a) result certificates are posted to each student at the end<br />

<strong>of</strong> each semester;<br />

(b) a consolidated statement <strong>of</strong> all subjects so far attempted<br />

is printed on the student's re-enrolment form. (The<br />

student keeps a receipted copy <strong>of</strong> this form when reenrolling.);<br />

(c) on completion <strong>of</strong> their courses, students receive a copy<br />

<strong>of</strong> their complete course record.<br />

2. Other statements are available, on request, at the fees<br />

shown:<br />

(a) List <strong>of</strong> all results<br />

are prior to 1971 as a manual search is<br />

Awards<br />

Applications for degree and diploma<br />

Students eligible to be admitted to a degree or to be awarded a<br />

diploma, graduate diploma or certificate are required to apply<br />

for the award on the form prescribed. Forms are available from<br />

and must be lodged at, the Student Administration Office,<br />

Administration Building.<br />

Applications for all awards close on 31 May (for students<br />

completing their courses at the end <strong>of</strong> first semester) or 30<br />

September (for students completing their courses in December),<br />

<strong>of</strong> the year in which the student anticipates completion <strong>of</strong><br />

the academic work for the award.<br />

Enrolment regulations<br />

Definitions<br />

In this section:<br />

Enrolment includes 're-enrolment'.<br />

Enrolment form includes 're-enrolment form'.<br />

Subject means any area <strong>of</strong> study which is part <strong>of</strong> a course<br />

leading to an award and which has a title and code number in<br />

the subject register maintained by the Student Administration<br />

section <strong>of</strong> the Registrar's Department; the singular includes the<br />

plural.<br />

Awarding department means the department or, where courses<br />

are organised on a faculty basis (Applied Science, Arts and<br />

Business) the faculty responsible for the particular course;<br />

'head <strong>of</strong> awarding department' has a similar meaning and<br />

includes the dean <strong>of</strong> the faculty where appropriate and the<br />

nominee <strong>of</strong> the head <strong>of</strong> the awarding department or dean.<br />

Deferred entry means an intending first-year student defers<br />

enrolment for up to one year on receipt <strong>of</strong> an <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>of</strong> a place.<br />

Leave <strong>of</strong> absence means the suspension <strong>of</strong> enrolment during a<br />

course for a specified period at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the appropriate<br />

faculty board on the basis that the enrolment will be resumed at<br />

the end <strong>of</strong> the period.<br />

Amendment to enrolment means the addition, deletion or<br />

changing <strong>of</strong> subject enrolments in a student's course <strong>of</strong> study.<br />

Abandonment means discontinuation <strong>of</strong> enrolment without formal<br />

notification. Abandons has a similar meaning, unless the<br />

contrary intention is expressed.<br />

Conditions <strong>of</strong> enrolment<br />

Enrolment at <strong>Swinburne</strong> lnstitute <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong> is conditional<br />

upon:<br />

the information which is supplied by the applicant to the<br />

lnstitute upon which an <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>of</strong> a place in a course is based,<br />

beina accurate;<br />

the approval <strong>of</strong> the head <strong>of</strong> the awarding department (or his<br />

A detailed report <strong>of</strong> (final) examination $30.00 nominee) <strong>of</strong> the subjects concerned;<br />

Students nearing completion <strong>of</strong> their courses<br />

Students nearlng completion <strong>of</strong> their courses may obtain a<br />

statement indicating all results to date and those subjects<br />

required to complete their courses. Fee $10.00.<br />

Any student who has been involved In a change <strong>of</strong> syllabus<br />

(e.g. from the 1974 syllabus to the 1974 syllabus revised 1978,<br />

or to the 1979 syllabus, etc ) and who has not prev~ously<br />

obtalned a statement, would be wise to do so before startlng the<br />

flnal semester.<br />

the undertaking <strong>of</strong> the student to abide by the regulations<br />

procedures and standards <strong>of</strong> conduct <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong> lnstitute<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong> and to grant to the Registrar the authority to<br />

provide appropriate authorities who have permitted a particular<br />

student to enrol at the Institute, details <strong>of</strong> that person's<br />

academic progress as may be requlred as a condition <strong>of</strong><br />

approval by that department or authority;<br />

the payment <strong>of</strong> the prescribed general service fee;<br />

the lodging <strong>of</strong> all documents required by the Registrar at the<br />

Cashier's Office or the Student Administrat~on Offlce as<br />

appropriate to the procedure being followed.
