4. Admission to candidature<br />

4.1 Admission requirements<br />

A candidate for a degree <strong>of</strong> Master by publication<br />

shall:<br />

(a) have held for a minimum period <strong>of</strong> five years:<br />

(i) a degree <strong>of</strong> the lnstitute or <strong>of</strong> any other<br />

institution approved by the Committee for this<br />

purpose; or<br />

(ii) such other qualification or experience as<br />

might be accepted as equivalent to (i) above.<br />

(b) submit to the lnstitute a publication or publications.<br />

4.2 Application<br />

No application for admission to candidature may be<br />

approved by the Committee except with the support <strong>of</strong><br />

the appropriate faculty board.<br />

5. For the purpose <strong>of</strong> assessing an application, the lnstitute<br />

shall require that any publication submitted in respect <strong>of</strong><br />

the application:<br />

(a) has been the subject <strong>of</strong> critical independent examination;<br />

(b) is available to the general public; and<br />

(c) where it consists <strong>of</strong> several papers, relates to one<br />

aspect <strong>of</strong> the same subject.<br />

6. A report issued by an organisation shall not, without the<br />

express consent <strong>of</strong> the organisation and the Institute, be<br />

accepted as a publication for the purpose <strong>of</strong> this statute.<br />

7. In the event <strong>of</strong> joint publication, the applicant shall provide<br />

the lnstitute with a written statement indicating the extent<br />

and nature <strong>of</strong> the applicant's personal contribution to the<br />

project. The applicant's statement should be countersigned<br />

by the joint author@) and supervisor (where applicable),<br />

or a written statement should be provided by the<br />

joint author(s) and supewisor (where applicable).<br />

8. The publication submitted should represent work which is<br />

considered by the appropriate faculty board to be the<br />

equivalent <strong>of</strong> two years full-time study.<br />

9. A candidate shall normally be required to present at least<br />

one seminar to staff and students <strong>of</strong> the lnstitute on the<br />

subject <strong>of</strong> publication.<br />

10. A candidate may not submit for examination work<br />

previously submitted for any previous academic qualification.<br />

11. In the first instance three copies <strong>of</strong> the publication shall be<br />

forwarded to the Registrar <strong>of</strong> the lnstitute who shall<br />

request the Committee to assess whether the candidate<br />

and the publication presented conforms to the guidelines<br />

numbered above (2-10) and are worthy <strong>of</strong> examination for<br />

the award <strong>of</strong> Masters degree by publication.<br />

12. The publication submitted shall be in English; if the original<br />

publication is in a language other than English, a translation<br />

must be supplied.<br />

13. If the publication is deemed worthy the Committee shall<br />

instigate the examination <strong>of</strong> the submission. The publication<br />

shall be examined by two examiners appointed in the<br />

same manner as those for the degree <strong>of</strong> Master by<br />

research. At least one <strong>of</strong> the examiners shall be external to<br />

the Institute.<br />

14. Each examiner shall be asked to given an opinion as to<br />

whether the publication demonstrated:<br />

(a) a thorough understanding <strong>of</strong> the relevant field <strong>of</strong><br />

study;<br />

(b) a high level <strong>of</strong> competence;<br />

(c) a discernable contribution in the field <strong>of</strong> study.<br />

15. Each examiner shall assess the publication submitted as<br />

either:<br />

(a) pass, or<br />

(b) fail.<br />

Publications which have been deemed to have failed may<br />

not be re-submitted.<br />

16. If the examiners disagree, the Committee may appoint a<br />

third examiner and a majority view will determine the<br />

result; the candidate may be required to undertake an oral<br />

examination.<br />

17. One copy <strong>of</strong> the publication, if passed by the Committee,<br />

shall be lodged in the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Library, and one shall be<br />

held by the department whose field <strong>of</strong> interest is closest to<br />

that <strong>of</strong> the candidate's work, and one shall be returned to<br />

the candidate.<br />

18. This statute may be amended from time to time by Council<br />

on the advice <strong>of</strong> the Academic Board acting on the<br />

recommendation <strong>of</strong> the Committee.<br />

Statute for the degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong><br />

Philosophy<br />

1. Definitions<br />

In this statute:<br />

Committee means the Higher Degrees Committee <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Academic Board;<br />

Councilmeans the Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong> Ltd;<br />

lnstitute means <strong>Swinburne</strong> lnstitute <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>;<br />

Faculty Board means the sub-committee <strong>of</strong> the Institute's<br />

Academic Board called the 'Faculty Board' (or any authorised<br />

sub-committee there<strong>of</strong>) which is responsible for<br />

studies being undertaken in the area;<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> Department means the person appointed Head <strong>of</strong><br />

Department or elected as Chairman <strong>of</strong> Department responsible<br />

for studies in the particular discipline.<br />

2. Grading <strong>of</strong> degree<br />

The degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy shall be awarded in<br />

one grade only.<br />

3. Admission to candidature<br />

3.1 Entry requirements<br />

A person wishing to be admitted to candidature shall<br />

have:<br />

3.1.1 qualified for the award <strong>of</strong> the degree <strong>of</strong> Master<br />

<strong>of</strong> the lnstitute (in a field relevant to the work<br />

proposed) or for the award <strong>of</strong> such other degree<br />

as the Committee may deem equivalent for this<br />

purpose; and shall have demonstrated to the<br />

Committee's satisfaction a capacity for research<br />

and investigational work in the area <strong>of</strong> study<br />

proposed; or<br />

3.1.2 qualified for an award judged by the Committee<br />

to be <strong>of</strong> relevant character and appropriate<br />

standard; and have experience which fulfills the<br />

requirements set out in 3.1 .I.<br />

3.2 A candidate who is enrolled for the degree <strong>of</strong> Master<br />

in the lnstitute may be permitted to transfer hislher<br />

candidature to the degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy<br />

after the completion <strong>of</strong> not less than twelve months (or<br />

its equivalent) <strong>of</strong> full-time research/coursework.
