Taxation Research and Advisory Centre<br />

The Taxation Research and Advisory Centre was formed firstly,<br />
in response to the community's need for easy access to advice<br />
on a progressively complex and difficult area and secondly, the<br />
college's growing awareness that its valuable resources should<br />
be made more readily available to the community.<br />
Services Offered<br />
- Research for tax planning<br />
- Computer programs for problem solving, simulation studies<br />
and cash flow analysis<br />
- Research for contesting tax assessments<br />
- Advice on interpreting income tax legislation and tax rulings<br />
- Assistance in compliance with income taxation department<br />
administrative requirements<br />
- Research for preparing academic papers<br />
- Library searches -<br />
Facilities<br />
- Extensive computer hardware and s<strong>of</strong>tware<br />
- Excellent library including 500 volumes on taxation, video<br />
and audio tapes and facilities for computerised literature<br />
searches<br />
- Experienced and qualified staff with legal, accounting, economic<br />
and computing backgrounds.<br />
Using the Centre<br />
The Centre runs on a fee for service basis and as a matter <strong>of</strong><br />
policy wishes its resources to be used extensively by the<br />
community. The range <strong>of</strong> services <strong>of</strong>fered should appeal to:<br />

The Science Shop<br />

The Science Shop was established in 1988 as a joint initiative<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong> with the Commission for the Future. It is seen as a<br />
pilot which will lay the foundations for other such centres<br />
throughout Australia.<br />
The Science Shop provides a means for individuals, community<br />
groups and small businesses to seek answers to scientific,<br />
engineering and technical questions arising from their daily<br />
lives, and for scientists and engineers to work on projects <strong>of</strong><br />
interest and value to the community.<br />
In addition The Science Shop publishes and disseminates<br />
information on the scientific and technical backgrounds to<br />
issues <strong>of</strong> concern to the community including the small busi-<br />
ness sector.<br />
A range <strong>of</strong> conferences, seminars and short courses are<br />
organised, designed to promote communication between scientists<br />
and the community.<br />

The Centre for Urban and Social Research was formed in 1986<br />
by amalgamation <strong>of</strong> the Centre for Urban Studies and the<br />
Centre for Applied Behavioural Studies. The activities <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Centre range from consultancy research through short courses<br />
and seminars to community development and liaison. There is<br />
a Management Committee composed <strong>of</strong> staff from the departments<br />
<strong>of</strong> Sociology, Psychology, Mathematics, Civil Engineering<br />
and Economics.<br />
Members <strong>of</strong> the Centre have researched and written numerous<br />
major consultancy reports for both public and private sector<br />
clients and have considerable research and policy development<br />
skills in the areas <strong>of</strong> survey research, housing, youth studies,<br />
ethnicity, social indicators, urban data bases and demographic<br />
forecasting and analysis. The Centre has excellent support<br />
facilities including a computer assisted telephone survey system.<br />

The Centre for Women's Studies was established in 1984 and<br />
is composed <strong>of</strong> members drawn from all divisions <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />
who have a wide range <strong>of</strong> expertise relevant to gender and the<br />
status <strong>of</strong> women.<br />
The activities <strong>of</strong> the Centre include:<br />
Presenting short courses on topics which concern women<br />
and gender (e.g., feminist theory, women and literature).<br />
Such courses are open to the general public.<br />
Carrying out research projects which investigate aspects <strong>of</strong><br />
the status <strong>of</strong> women and social policy relevant to the special<br />
needs <strong>of</strong> women.<br />
Compiling educational materials relating to women's studies<br />
for use in teaching courses on sex and gender as well as for<br />
inclusion in existing courses.<br />
Preparation <strong>of</strong> occasional papers.
