7.0 Environment Services<br />

Ground water is available at 35-38m depth in the city of Meerut. There is depletion in the<br />

water level in the district by 0.15-2.5m during last decade. As per the information from the<br />

NCR report, the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) level of ground water is 329, whereas the<br />

pH level was recorded as 8.4 during the year 1998.<br />

7.1.1. Air Quality<br />

The ambient air quality surveys carried out for Thana Road Junction reveals that<br />

Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) level were far in excess of the standard level of 200<br />

ug/m3. The SPM levels were found to be highest in the month of February.<br />

7.1.2. Noise Pollution<br />

Our analysis of data collected from department of Environment shows that the average<br />

level of noise exceeds permissible norms, in the different points of city.<br />

7.1.3. Polluting Industries<br />

The city of Meerut has a large industrial setup that is also in some way or the other<br />

responsible for contributing to the pollution levels in the city. In terms of polluting<br />

industries, the city of Meerut has 40 polluting industries in the form of slaughter house,<br />

dyeing industry, meat processing industry etc.<br />

• Bio-Medical Waste<br />

There are 137 health facilities located in the city. However, In spite of such large number<br />

of health facilities operating in the city there is no incinerator present for treating the bio<br />

medical wastes. The result is that wastes discharged from health units mixes with the<br />

solid waste of the city posing a serious problem for health and safety of the inhabitants.<br />

7.1.4. Heritage and Tourism<br />

• City is the gateway to Hastinapur.<br />

• Also believed to have been an important centre of Buddhism during the time of<br />

Ashoka.<br />

• City is associated with igniting the spark of first Freedom struggle in 1857 against<br />

East India Company.<br />

• The entire region within 40 kms of radius is dotted with places of religious, tourist<br />

and historical importance, Buddhist and Jain shrines.<br />

• No specific heritage site is present in Meerut city<br />

8.0 Financial Profile<br />

The total revenue income of the MNN for has grown consistently from Rs 4510 lakhs in<br />

2001/02 to Rs 5114 lakhs in 2004/05 registering a compounded annual growth rate<br />

(CAGR) of 4.3 per cent during 2001/02 to 2004/05. Tax Revenues have shown negative<br />

trend of -1.7% from 2001/02 to 2004/05 while Non Tax revenue accounts have shown a<br />

growth of nearly 8% during the same period. The revenue account has shown a positive<br />

closing balance during the F.Y 2004/05 of about Rs. 419 lakhs, which has been a reverse<br />

trend from fiscal deficits registered in previous three years from 2001/02 and 2003/04.<br />

This appears to be a welcome sign that enhances the availability of finances for various<br />
