The net density of the developed area in Meerut has been increasing with increasing<br />
population, which is primarily due to the fact that the areas has been constant while the<br />
population has been increasing with every year with the CAGR of 3.78%.<br />
3.4.4. Social Composition of Population<br />
There is large poor population in the city. Population residing in such areas is dealt<br />
separately under section III – Urban poor as Sub Mission – II of JNNURM. At overall city<br />
level nearly 539 households has been identified as households below poverty line.<br />

3.4.5. Access of the Slum Dwellers to Basic Services<br />
The slum dwellers and urban poor are similar terms and are used interchangeably in the<br />
context of equitable urban development. The existing scenario in Meerut has got two<br />
distinct dimensions. City’s slum dwellers & urban poor constitute over 40% population of<br />
the city.<br />
Such a high residential density coupled with acute shortage and dilapidation of housing<br />
stock marred with extremely poor infrastructural conditions necessitates redevelopment<br />
and renewal works so as to improve the habitability of these areas for the urban poor.<br />
Some key indicators for the slums in Meerut are presented in Table 3.8.<br />
Details of Slum and their access to basic services are shown in Map 21.<br />
