The mining route<br />
Asturias holds out the promise of one<br />
last itinerary of interest. This is the<br />
route through the mines, which have<br />
played such a vital role in the<br />
Principality’s history. Taking the<br />
AS-251, some 30 kilometres separates<br />
Nava from Pola de Laviana,leading<br />
into mining Asturias and onwards to<br />
the industrial landscapes of the<br />
Leaving Langreo and its industrial<br />
belt behind, the AS-111 speeds, on<br />
to Mieres (12 kilometres). The<br />
town’s focal centre is the Plaza de<br />
Requejo, with its array of cider<br />
taverns. Close by, in the town of<br />
Insierto, is the 18th-century Shrine<br />
of the Martyrs of Valdecuna. The<br />
highway links Mieres with Pola de<br />
Lena, on the outskirts of which<br />
stands Santa Cristina, a stunning<br />
Church of Santa Cristina de Lena. Pola de Lena<br />
Caudal and Nalón river valleys. One<br />
soon comes to El Entrego, site of the<br />
Mining Museum, where one can enter<br />
a mock-up re-created for the visitor,<br />
and experience the smells and noises<br />
of a real working pit. Opening times:<br />
