For the 2012-2013 school year, all high school and middle school parents can continue to use SchoolTool to
access their child's attendance, academic and discipline records online. At Draper MS, Essential Tasks will
also be available through SchoolTool. Both schools have gone "paperless," meaning that interim reports and
report cards are available only through SchoolTool (they will no longer be mailed home). See calendar dates
for when these reports are scheduled to be made available online. In addition, teachers will update grades
and attendance information in SchoolTool on a regular basis. To sign up for SchoolTool, or if you are unable to
access the Internet, please contact the high school or middle school main office.

Release of
Student Information
Under NCLB
Pursuant to the federal education legislation No
Child Left Behind, Mohonasen must disclose to
military recruiters, upon request, the names,
addresses and telephone numbers of high school
students. The district must also notify parents of
their right, and the right of the child, to request
that the district not release such information
without prior written parental consent. Parents
(or students 18 or older) wishing to exercise their
option to withhold their consent to the release
of the above information to military recruiters
are asked to sign and return a form, which is
available in the high school office.
Attention Mohonasen sports fans!
Mohonasen’s sports schedules are subject to frequent changes. To receive an e-mail or cell
phone text message the second a game has been changed or canceled, sign up for this free
service at www.HighSchoolSports.net. If you have any questions during the year, call the
Mohonasen Athletic Office at 356-8270.
Release of
Student Directory
Information
From time to time, student directory information
is published on the Mohonasen website, in
school publications or released to the media
to recognize student achievement or depict
activities within the Mohonasen School District.
Parents who object to the disclosure of their
child’s directory information should notify BOTH
the superintendent of schools and their child’s
building principal – in writing – on or before
September 15 of each school year. For more
details, see the “Release of Directory
Information” notice on the district website at
www.mohonasen.org.
Private/Parochial
Transportation
Parents who want Mohonasen to provide transportation
for their children to approved parochial
schools are responsible for filing the Request for
Parochial Transportation form with the principal
of the parochial school where their children will
attend. Principals of parochial schools will collect
forms, complete the certificate and forward
them as a group to the school district. Forms
are due by April 1, 2013. Please note that on
staff only days, there will be no private/parochial
transportation. Questions? Call the Mohonasen
transportation office at 356-8260.
Closings and Delays
Closings, such as an unplanned early dismissal,
are communicated via an automated phone
messaging system to all phone numbers parents
have provided. Please note, the district does NOT
use the automated phone system for snow day
announcements. Closings, as well as snow day
announcements, are quickly posted on the Web at
www.mohonasen.org and on Facebook, sent out
via e-mail through School News Notifier (SNN) and
are also released to all local TV stations and major
radio stations. The Elementary PTO also maintains
a “phone tree” to contact parents of K-5 students
in the event of an unplanned early dismissal. It’s
essential that parents keep their phone contact
numbers current for this purpose. There may be
times when the phone tree cannot be activated
(loss of phone service, not enough time, etc.) No
matter what grade level, make sure your children
know what to do if they arrive home unexpectedly
and you’re not there. For safety’s sake, NOW is the
time to create a plan.
Resilient in the face of challenges
It’s no secret that the last four years have come with many financial challenges for Mohonasen and school districts across
New York. In this time, state and federal funding for schools statewide has been reduced by more than $3 billion. This has
resulted in $7 million in budget cuts at Mohonasen, including 82 teaching, administrative and support staff positions.
While every new year brings with it additional challenges, Mohonasen officials are focused on being nimble and forward
thinking, as they work to preserve programs and services for students. While programs have been reduced due to budget
cuts, very few have been eliminated wholesale – meaning that many opportunities still exist for district students.
In fact, there is some cause for celebration.
Graduation rates are on the rise, jumping from 78 percent in 2008-2009 to 85 percent for 2011-2012. In that same time, the
graduation rate for economically disadvantaged students has jumped from 64 percent to about 80 percent. District leaders
attribute these results to programs that are working, including academic and social support for all students – especially
those considered “at-risk” of not graduating.
The district is also adding and expanding programs.
“We want to have programs that give students real-world experiences that will prepare them for the job market. We are
focused on technology skills, critical thinking, and hands-on opportunities,” said Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Spring.
“While we may be cutting back in some areas, we are expanding and rethinking others.”
New programming includes the Mo-Tech initiative at Mohonasen High School. Courses are offered in the fields of
criminal justice; film, theater and television; technology and trades; business and marketing; and education. These
specialized electives combine core curriculum work with field trips, internships, professional contacts and a hands-on
environment.
In addition, Mohonasen educators are focused on improving literacy skills district wide, integrating the new Common Core
Learning Standards (new national standards that all state schools are required to adopt), supporting teachers so they can continue
to serve students to the best of their ability and involving the community every step of the way.
“Although we are in a challenging environment, we don't have the right to throw up our hands in resignation. We owe it to our
students to be pliable and strong as an organization,” Spring said. “We are focused on remaining resilient, maintaining
programming we know works for kids, and preparing our students for today’s world.”
This year’s calendar outlines just a few of the programs Mohonasen leaders are committed to as they work to be Resilient in the Face of Challenges.
Literacy: A solid, critical foundation
Core academic areas must have a literacy component. This is what Mohonasen
educators believe.
For this reason, district resources have been focused on infusing reading, writing,
listening and speaking skills into all subject areas. This effort has been underway at
Mohonasen for some time, but has recently gained momentum with the introduction
and integration of the Common Core Learning Standards.
Teachers are participating in ongoing training and curriculum writing to develop
units that apply things like math and science skills to real-life situations, which
almost always require some kind of reading, writing, listening or speaking
skills. Teachers are working with specialists to integrate literacy skills into the
techniques and strategies taught in each subject area.
Mo-Tech: Modern, hands-on learning opportunities
Through Mo-Tech (Mohonasen Technical/Vocational Initiative), Mohonasen High School now has a variety of
on-campus programs in specific areas of study that are designed to expose students to college-and-career options beyond high school.
The initiative combines hands-on, non-traditional opportunities, with classroom learning.
Current Mo-Tech programs include: Manufacturing & Machining Technology; Criminal Justice; Film, Theater
& Television; Tech & Trades; Business Ownership & Marketing; and the Career Exploration Internship
Program (CEIP). Each program includes elective courses, a program facilitator who is a working professional
in the applicable field, field trips and senior projects/internships. Officials are looking to expand this
initiative so that all elective programming at the high school follows this model.
Transition Teams: Ensuring success for all
Mohonasen educators are dedicated to sustaining programs that will help all students find success.
For those students who have been increasingly disengaged in school – making them at risk for not
completing high school – there are the high school Transition Teams.
These small-learning communities consist of four content teachers who stay with the group for the
first two years of high school. Classes are small, intimate groups that allow teachers to better identify
and address the needs of each student. Teachers serve as mentors, helping with organization, goal
setting, and pursuing interests in employment and college. In addition, students and their families
receive additional support through a guidance
counselor and social worker.
During the time this initiative
has been in place, Mohonasen
has seen an increase in graduation
rates and officials are
predicting that rates will continue
to climb.
Enrichment: Building and
enhancing key skills
Mohonasen offers a variety of enrichment opportunities for students
that are designed to enhance students’ knowledge, skills and
motivations so they are prepared for higher-level coursework.
For example, the Math Olympiad program gives students in grades
3-6 the opportunity to “play” math games and expand their math
skills, and the Math Counts program helps those in grades 7 and 8
build their math literacy skills. Students also participate in competitions
like Future City, the Department of Energy Science Bowl, and
Odyssey of the Mind – all of which challenge students to complete a
task or tasks using important teamwork, critical thinking, creative
and academic skills.
In addition, district schools offer students enrichment programs
that help to open their eyes to the future. For example, during the
annual 8th Grade Career Day, students explore a variety of careers
and examine their educational and occupational goals.
Common Core Standards:
Aligning with a national curriculum
With the introduction of the federal Race to the Top initiative, all of New York’s schools
are required to implement the new Common Core Learning Standards. The transition
from the former state learning standards has required district leaders and teachers to
revise the district's curriculum in all subject areas – a process that began in the spring
of 2011. The new standards mean a greater integration of literacy in the areas of history/
social studies, science and technical subjects, as well as new standards for math and
English language arts. The NYS exams will be based on the new standards beginning
this year.
While the process is proving to be beneficial in all subject areas in all
grades, officials are most excited about the revitalization that is taking
place in courses other than English language arts. When literacy is
integrated across content areas, skills like reading, writing, speaking
and listening become more the “norm” and it becomes easier for
students to see how they can be applied outside the classroom.
Alternative Education:
One non-traditional
path to success
In the last few years, Mohonasen leaders have
seen great success with the district’s middle school
alternative education program. Here, students who
are demonstrating academic, social and behavioral
difficulties within the traditional setting, find additional
academic and social support. Students take part in the
same academic program as their peers, but are also offered
additional hands-on opportunities in both the school and
surrounding community.
Because of the success of the middle school program, the high school now
offers an alternative education program. This program is modeled after the
one at the middle school, with additional credit recovery programming
allowing students to basically “re-do” classes they failed or performed
poorly in. This way, students can catch up to their peers, improving their
chances of graduating on time and taking part in higher-level and/or
college-level courses.
Academic and social support:
Providing help along the way
Mohonasen uses data from periodic, or benchmark, assessments to analyze student
progress. By doing this, educators can “zero in” on each individual student to provide
any necessary support or extra help. District schools also have Child Success Teams,
which are groups of teachers, guidance counselors, nurses, social workers,
administrators and any appropriate outside agencies, to help students who are
exhibiting academic, social, behavioral or medical problems.
Also, new this year, Mohonasen has adopted the Dignity for All Students policy,
reinforcing the fact that all students have the right to be safe in school. This
policy, which is newly required of all districts in New York, goes hand in hand with
anti-bullying and character education initiatives that are already underway to
reinforce concepts like compassion, gratitude and service. These are important
supports for all students, especially as they are faced with increased peer pressure.
These efforts are part of both classroom lessons and school/district-wide activities.
College-level courses give students a “jump start” on their college career. On
average, more than 75 percent of the Mohonasen students who take at least one of
the school’s college-level courses earn some level of college credit.
Plans are currently underway to add to the high school’s collection of about 15
college-level courses*. Plans are underway to add a college-level component to
the Criminal Justice program and the new machining program being offered
at the high school in partnership with Capital Region BOCES. As the Mo-Tech
initiative expands, district leaders plan to add additional college-level courses
so that the opportunity to earn college credit in high school is available to more
students. Officials are also looking to add new college-level English and math
courses, along with college proficiency exams and remedial coursework to ensure
that all students are prepared for college-level work by the time they graduate.
*The number of college-level courses at Mohonasen High School changes from
year to year.
The Mohonasen Community:
A village for each student
District leaders work to involve all members of the community—staff and
faculty, students, parents, local business leaders, elected officials and others—in
the planning and implementation of district programs and activities. These efforts
help strengthen programs and better prepare students for the real world.
For example, Mohonasen has partnered with Capital Region BOCES and area
business leaders in the creation of the Tech Valley Manufacturing and Machining
Technology course being offered at Mohonasen High School starting this fall.
United States Representative Paul Tonko visited the high school twice last year to
hear plans and give his support for this effort, and conversations are underway
with two local colleges to add a college-level component to the program.
The district has also held budget forums the last two years to educate the community
on the budget and gather input on values and priorities. These forums are part of
a larger effort to ensure that the district community is kept informed and is able to
give feedback. In fact, making your voice heard has never been easier. Current communications
efforts include the district’s website, www.mohonasen.org, its Facebook
page, www.facebook.com/Mohonasen, School News Notifier (SNN), various printed
publications, board of education meetings and work with local media outlets.
Professional Development:
Improving teacher, leader skills
Just as in any profession, the world of education is constantly evolving. To ensure
that Mohonasen teachers and educational leaders also continue to grow,
the district continues to utilize both internal and external expertise to provide
many opportunities for professional development and training. This includes
formal coursework, online experiences, workshops, conferences, site visits,
help from technical experts and a range of informal events and activities.
For example, the district participates in the Model Schools Technology-
Training Program, through which teachers attend a variety of
teacher-led, technology-related training sessions both at local school
districts and online; teachers in the Mo-Tech initiative have attended
subject-specific classes and seminars designed to increase their knowledge
in their particular programs; and Transition Team math and ELA
teachers have attended training sessions on new and different ways to
assess student progress in order to better inform instruction for those who
struggle with math and language concepts.
Dignity for All Students Act
Mohonasen
Code of Conduct
In compliance with the state's Safe Schools
Against Violence (SAVE) legislation and the
Dignity for All Students Act, the Mohonasen
Board of Education has adopted a Code of
Conduct (i.e. rules and regulations) for all
people on school property. The Code of Conduct
will serve as a standard for consistency and
fairness that protects students' rights while
promoting responsibility. Parents play an
important role in the maintenance of good
discipline in Mohonasen schools. Parents are
encouraged to review the Code of Conduct and
discuss it with their children on a regular basis.
The Code of Conduct can be found online at
www.mohonasen.org or in each school main
office. Anyone with questions about The Code of
Conduct should call their child(ren)'s school.
New York State’s Dignity for All Students Act (The Dignity Act) took effect on July 1, 2012. Just as with the
district's Code of Conduct, the new law seeks to provide the State’s public elementary and secondary school
students with a safe and supportive environment free from discrimination, intimidation, taunting, harassment,
and bullying on school property, a school bus and/or at a school function. The Dignity Act includes, but is not
limited to, acts of discrimination and harassment based on a student’s race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic
group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender (defined to include gender identity or
expression), or sex.
This new law dovetails perfectly with a number of programs and initiatives already in place in Mohonasen's
schools, aimed at promoting tolerance and bullying prevention districtwide. These initiatives include the Peers
for Peace groups at both the middle and high school; Peer Mediation programs at both the middle and high
school; the elementary Peaceful Bus Program; the Back Off, Stand Up anti-bullying middle school initiative,
which includes student-produced public service announcements on DMSTV and parent evening programs; and the
elementary OK and Mentor programs.
School officials understand the impact bullying and harassment can have on a school environment. More than
a physical threat, bullying creates a climate of fear and makes learning difficult for all students. The new law
calls for each school to appoint a Dignity Act Coordinator who is trained to address issues in areas protected by
the law and is accessible to the school community. The Dignity Act Coordinators at Mohonasen are the principals
of each school. The names and contact information for each principal are listed below.
