(Post A-Level Diploma)
what level course do I choose?
The level at which you can begin a course depends upon your previous
qualifications and experience. The entry requirements for each level of
qualification are outlined at the beginning of each industry section. Please
note that completion of the first year of a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma
is recognised as a 90 Credit Diploma - this is similar to achieving an
AS-level after completing the first year of an A-Level.
If you are undecided or not sure which course to apply for, please contact
our Course Advice Team Tel: 01273 667759 or Email: info@ccb.ac.uk or
come in and discuss your options with us.
What will my
course lead onto?
Each subject’s page contains
a chart which shows you the
qualification levels available
to you at City College. You
will also find a ‘What’s next?’
section on each page which
gives you an insight into
further study and careers and
jobs within that industry.
is one of the most creative, funky, fun and cultural
in the heart of it. We are a vocational college, which
means that we provide training and qualifications that
or university. We have recently been graded by Ofsted
as outstanding in many areas. Apply and become a part
of our success story.
Real life experience for work
Employers tell us they value skills and experience
as well as a qualification. Therefore, our courses are
designed to give you real-life experience and our
facilities reflect that - from our industry standard
training kitchens to life-size construction rigs,
specialist electrical facilities, theatre, training
restaurant and hair and beauty salons. Many of these
are open to the public and serving real clients.
New areas to study in
With over 90 courses, across 15 teaching
departments, you’ll have many new choices available
to you than ever before. City College has tons of
different courses that you might never have seen
before or are different from what your school or 6th
form has been offering. From Beauty Therapy to
Motor Vehicle to Forensic Sciences, we’re sure to
have the right option for you.
Moving on up - further courses
Each department offers a clear progression route for
you to get onto the next rung of the ladder in your
studies. We are confident that once you are here you
will enjoy your college experience and when you leave
us you will be full of the confidence and knowledge
required to take that next step.
Progressing to Higher Education
degrees at university
We’re a leading provider of vocational courses
in the South-East and in many cases, individual
department’s pass rates are way above national
averages.
City College enjoys a great reputation with local
employers and universities because of the success of
the students who have gone before you. Students who
apply to Higher Education gain places on their chosen
specialist courses at top universities and art colleges.
Have fun!
Your education and training is very important, but
that is not all that coming to college is about. City
College is more of an adult environment than school
and we will treat you as such. You will have freedom
to pursue extra-curricular activities and we run
events and activities throughout the year, such as
sports teams, fitness classes, talent shows, business
competitions, charity events, art and fashion shows
and much more.
City College provides you with a unique
educational experience. Our courses have
a practical focus that enables our students
to truly learn by doing and working in their
field of study. Our recent Ofsted inspection
commented highly on how we prepare our
students fully for further study or entering the
world of work: ‘The college’s development and
use of partnerships are outstanding. Within
the curriculum, the highly effective and
sustained use of employer links add value to
student’s experiences’, Ofsted June 2011.
At City College you will:
• make important links with industry and local
businesses through our extensive employer
partnerships, work placements and job
hunting support.
• get involved by providing feedback to your
course representatives or by becoming a course
representative yourself and representing the views
of your group on the Student Council and to college
managers. You can also be elected on the College’s
Board of Governors and contribute to key decisions
affecting both staff and students.
• gain support through your Professional Skills
Tutorial programme to know more about the world
of work, career opportunities and what employers
expect so that you are ready to move on work or
higher education.
• join a diverse community of people from different
backgrounds, cultures and ages and a place where
difference is celebrated.
About Us > Courses English & > Maths Title 14
English
& Maths
When you finish your course at City College,
we want you to have the best possible chance
of moving onto a good job or further study.
Having good English and Maths is one of the
key things that employers look for and is often
a requirement to move onto higher levels of
education. So it is important for you to have the
best level of English and Maths skills that you
can achieve which includes retaking your GCSE
if you didn’t get Grade C first time round.
This is why continuing to study English and Maths is
part of all our vocational courses. Exactly how much
and what you study will depend on the level of your
course, your previous experiences and qualifications
and any support needs you have.
Level 1 courses
You will study both English and Maths for two hours
a week, each working towards a Functional Skills
qualification usually at Level 1.
Level 2 courses
You will study either English or Maths twice a week
for a total of three hours in a class made up of
students from a mixture of courses. If you have
already achieved GCSE grade D in either English or
Maths, you will have the chance to retake one of these
subjects. If you have grade E or below you will work
towards a Level 1 or 2 Functional Skills qualification
in either English or Maths.
This is part of your programme of study at the College.
Our specialist English or Maths lecturers will work with
you to identify which is the best qualification, subject
and level for you based on your previous study and the
relevance to the course.
Level 3 courses
If you have already got a grade D and want to
re-take your GCSE English or Maths, you will have the
opportunity to join a GCSE day time class. This is an
optional extra so the hours will be in addition to your
main qualification, so you must be prepared to commit
to take on this study, attend all classes and complete
the qualification. For some students there may also be
the option of studying in the evening.
It is possible that your past experiences may have
Courses > Apprenticeships
apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are ideal for you if you want
to learn through experience and receive
your training in the workplace. It is also
very appealing for employers to work with
apprentices as they get an opportunity to be a
part of your development and can induct you
seamlessly into their work culture. It’s a very
rewarding experience for both parties!
You may already be employed but want to gain a
qualification to show you have the relevant skills in
your job role or you may wish to progress within the
company and an Apprenticeship qualification will
demonstrate to your managers that you are ready for
career progression.
City College is a major provider of Apprenticeships
in the South-East and we have extensive contacts in
the industry.
We work closely with employers and advertise their
vacancies on the National Apprenticeship Vacancy
Service and have a high street presence through our
City Skills & Jobs Shop.
nationally recognised qualification.
You can ‘earn while you learn’
Wages will vary depending on the type of
Apprenticeship you are taking; however you will earn
no less than £95 per week. Recent surveys have
suggested that the average amount apprentices earn
is now around £170 per week.
Flexible training
As an employee, you will be in active employment
for most of your time as most training takes place on
the job. The rest of your training will take place at
“Forensic science is concerned with
using scientific methods either in
public, in a court, or in the justice
system as a whole. In fact, any
science used for the purposes of the
law is forensic science. The prime
function of Forensic Science is to
provide evidence to support criminal
Access to
Higher Education
If you want to prepare yourself for
degree-level education in a supportive
environment, an Access course is the
ideal route. The courses last one year and
involve approximately three days a week
at College. A recent moderation report by
LASER commented that “City College is
clearly demonstrating best practice and
offering a great service to Access students”
and our Access students have a 94%
progression rate to Higher Education or
employment and training.
To succeed on an Access course, you’ll need to be 19
or over, motivated, enthusiastic, be able to manage your
time effectively and be ready to study. You will be
part of a group of adult students who are excited
about learning and are willing to work hard with other
members of the group and participate.
We offer a wide range of Access courses, all of which
provide an opportunity to learn more about a specific
subject area as well as core skills, so they are excellent
preparation for study at university. Forget school - you
will be learning in a friendly, community-spirited
college environment. All of your classes will be highly
engaging and enable you to be involved and assessed
by a range of methods including presentations, essays,
reports, case studies, short answer tasks, and for some
courses, practical work.
Entry requirements
Access courses are designed for people without the
appropriate skills and qualifications to prepare for
higher education. If you do not already have a GCSE
grade C in English and GCSE Maths grade D you
will need to demonstrate literacy and numeracy at
an appropriate level for the course by completing an
initial assessment at interview. You will need to show
a good level of motivation, be fully committed to the
course and be able to spend a minimum of 8 hours per
week studying at home. You will also need to submit a
personal statement in support of your application.
