The Civil War KVIE: Sunday, April 3 through Thursday, April 7 at 8pm On the 150th anniversary of the beginning of America’s Civil War, a special encore broadcast of The Civil War by Ken Burns celebrates generals and ordinary soldiers, a heroic transcendent president, and a country that had to divide itself in two in order to become one. This epic documentary brings to life America’s most destructive and defining conflict. Masterpiece Classic: Upstairs Downstairs KVIE: Sundays, April 10, 17, 24 at 9pm The saga continues at 165 Eaton Place with new characters upstairs and down in a three-part sequel to the Masterpiece series, starring: Jean Marsh, Dame Eileen Atkins, Keeley Hawes, and Ed Stoppard. Set in 1936, the lives of masters and servants have never been so captivating. NOVA KVIE: Wednesdays, April 13, 20, 27 at 9pm The Bible’s Buried Secrets investigates the origins of the ancient Israelites, evolution of their belief in one God and the creation of the Bible (4/13). Power Surge (pictured) showcases the latest and greatest innovations from artificial trees to cleaner coal, nuclear energy, and ideas to re-engineer the climate system (4/20). Mount Saint Helens Back From the Dead looks at the return of plant and animal life to the barren landscape of Mount Saint Helens after the eruption in 1980. But there’s a new threat: the mountain, too, is coming back to life (4/27). 4
RegionalFEATURES ViewFinder KVIE: Wednesdays, April 6, 13, 20, 27, at 7pm In My Musical Life, we look at how the program Music in the Mountains is discovering and nurturing young composers as they explore their own wildly diverse musical styles and passions (4/6). Critical Condition: California’s Emergency Rooms (pictured) explores the challenges facing hospital emergency rooms in our region. It’s a system designed to save lives, but may be in need of its own lifeline. Hear from doctors, patients, and nurses impacted by the overcrowding crisis (4/13). Underwritten by UC Davis Health System. The Golden Game: The Minor Leagues provides a unique glimpse into the lives of minor league baseball players at various stages of their careers (4/20). America’s Heartland KVIE: Wednesdays, April 6, 13, 20, 27, at 7:30pm First Lady Michelle Obama (pictured) and the White House kitchen garden are featured during a special episode. Mrs. Obama introduces Jason Shoultz to the array of vegetables and other produce that she believes are key components of a healthy diet. (4/6). We look at a program helping farmers with disabilities get back on the job, and farm families work to preserve historic rural churches (4/13). Jason goes on a one-of-a-kind cattle drive to help a Utah ranching family move their herd to pasture (4/20). In New York, farmers are still growing apples on land first farmed during the American Revolution (4/27). Underwritten by the Monsanto Company and the American Farm Bureau Federation. An Evening with Huell Howser KVIE: Thursdays, April 14, 21, 28 at 8pm Huell Howser spends the day at Angel Stadium meeting the folks at West Coast Turf and learning about large-venue grass installations. On Catalina Island, Huell tours the Chicago Catalina Cubs’ 1940s spring training location. He then explores natural vernal pools and the Kern River Preserve (4/14). Take an adventure through Palm Springs with Huell as he visits the historical civil engineering landmark the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, a cactus garden, Blue Skies Village in Rancho Mirage, and the automated McCullough House (4/21). He’s off to Las Vegas to find hidden gold at the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park. Some of the best things can be found along-side the road. Huell shows you three that caught his eye: a 49er RV Park, an Air Museum, and Eureka Elk (4/28). Saving the Bay KVIE: Fridays beginning April 22 at 9pm In part one of this four-part series, photo-realistic animation illustrates the formation of the San Francisco Bay following the last Ice Age—introducing the first inhabitants along the Bay’s shores, including: Native Peoples, flora and fauna, and the European exploration and settlement (4/22). Part two follows San Francisco’s rapid maturity into a major metropolis, following the California Gold Rush (1849-1906)—becoming the center of a broad economic empire on the Pacific (4/29). 5
