Sun and UV light
The sun has many beneficial effects but it can also damage the skin. Some of the UV
radiation in sunlight can penetrate deeply into the skin, where it can damage the genetic
information (DNA) in the cell nuclei of skin cells.
Human skin does have a natural repair mechanism, but the body’s repair system is less
effective at repairing UV skin damage in strong sunlight or when one is older. This can lead
to chronic light damage in the deeper layers of the skin, or may become visible as premature
ageing of the skin (wrinkles).
Why sunscreen plus repair
All ATEIA® sunscreen products contain the latest generation of sun protection factors to
provide reliable protection against UVA and UVB radiation according to EU
recommendations. Protection against sun damage is enhanced with DNA-repair
enzymes in all ATEIA® sunscreen products. The combination of innovative repair concepts
and DNA-repair enzymes provides protection against the harmful effects of UV light in
deeper, hidden layers of the skin.
DNA-repair enzymes
DNA-repair enzymes are DNA-binding proteins that function as the body’s intrinsic repair
system in the nuclei of skin cells. This technique has been copied from nature by an
international team of dermatologists engaged in a research project aimed at developing an
innovative sunscreen. As a ‘model’, the researchers used microbes that have been exposed
for thousands of years to very high levels of UV radiation and have very efficient repair
mechanisms.
Why Nopasomes®
All ATEIA®’s sunscreen and suncare products contain a combination of two DNA repair
enzymes with different actions, in the form of liposomes (Photosomes, Ultrasomes) and a
botanical extract of Nopal cactus (Nopasomes®).
This unique combination of active ingredients* already supports the body’s own skin cell
repair mechanisms while sunbathing, and prevents premature ageing or damage of the skin
by UV radiation.
Photosomes activate the repair mechanisms of the skin in daylight, and Ultrasomes do the
same at night (24 hour action). Photosomes and Ultrasomes are in the form of liposomes
and can therefore penetrate into deeper layers of the skin. The Nopal cactus can soothe and
prevent skin irritation due to its high polysaccharide content. The preventive effects of the
