<strong>The</strong> flag poles were<br />

ordered early spring<br />

2003 and placed in<br />

position June 2003.<br />

<strong>The</strong> 753 names bricks<br />

were ready in July and<br />

the contractor placed<br />

them the first week of<br />

August 2003.<br />

On Monday October 20, 2003 we held a dedication ceremony.<br />

Mayor Don Negely delivered a proclamation and the guest<br />

speaker was State Representative David Dill. Other funds were<br />

received from <strong>The</strong> American legion post for half the monument<br />

and their post members name bricks. Also the local organization<br />

of the Babbitt Lions donated the flag poles and assisted with the<br />

cost of running electrical power out to the site. Pictures show the<br />

monument with all three flags flying and a close up of the<br />

Monument that was mined at a local quarry.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is also a Walk of Honor containing 753 completed name<br />

bricks with room for 226 more. Each brick contains name,<br />

branch of service, war involved in or service dates and also personal<br />

info such as medals.<br />

On November 11, 2003 the recently completed <strong>Korean</strong> <strong>War</strong><br />

Memorial was dedicated in the city of South Charleston, West<br />

Virginia.<br />

<strong>The</strong> dedication of the memorial was the result of three<br />

years of fund raising activities including. cookbook sales,<br />

quilt raffles, sales of home made crafts and of individual and<br />

private donations. <strong>The</strong> Mountaineer Chapter of Charleston, W.<br />

VA. and the Elk River Chapter of Clendenin, W. VA. joined<br />

forces to raise funds for this memorial. Both chapters would<br />

like to thank all those who donated either time or money to<br />

bring the Memorial to completion. <strong>The</strong> memorial has engraved<br />

bricks on the Eastern side dedicated to approximately 240<br />

young men who made the supreme sacrifice during the <strong>Korean</strong><br />

<strong>War</strong>. All of these young men were from the area surrounding<br />

Charleston, West Virginia.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Western side of the memorial has bricks engraved with<br />

the names of those who have served and survived all our wars.<br />

During the dedication <strong>KWVA</strong> members read the names of the<br />

240 who perished and members of the South Charleston Fire<br />

Department rang a bell as each name was read. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Korean</strong><br />
