I am writing on behalf of my father and found your name and
email address on a Korean War Veterans site. My dad fought in
the Korean War and didn’t talk about his experiences much until
the last few years, as I am sure is quite common. Two years ago
he asked me to try to find two old army buddies for him via internet.
I was miraculously able to locate one of them, as he had an
uncommon name. Dad and he were able to talk on the phone several
times before the gentleman died of cancer.
Yesterday, Dad brought me a picture of the other man, along with
a handwritten note of information he has of him, and asked me to
please try again. This is what Dad wrote: “Paul Harrison– He
came home from Korea on the USS Freeman, arriving in Seattle
4-15-52. Stationed at Camp Cook, CA. Unit transferred to Ft.
Lewis, WA 12-52. Last known married to Marlene with three
children. Living in Illinois 1954.” My parents do not have email,
so use ours: His contact info:
Ernest Dickason, 913 Allen Ave., Centralia, WA 98531. Tel: 360-
736-6268. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Jean Hamilton
In the latter months of 1950, my father and I were bowling at
Boom Town, Fort Meade, MD. A young soldier came over and
asked me if I would write to him. He said he was heading for
Korea. I looked at my Dad, he shook his head “yes” so I gave the
soldier my address and he gave me his. We wrote for over a year,
and in that time I managed to write to 20 others I had never met.
I often wonder what happened to them, and still pray hard for all
our service people. I remember only a few names, the one I met
was Joe Benny Unseld, ones I remember writing to were Byron
Simpson, James Shirley, Russell Niedermyer, Johnny
Branseum and Big Mo (Moselewski) I realize the spelling
might be off on the names but if by chance you recognize the
names, please write to me. I realize it has been 54 years, but
through the years I have wondered about all I wrote to for up to
two years while they were in Korea. I was just 15 when I began
to write to Joe Benny and the others. If you or your friends
remember writing to me, please drop me a few lines.. I would
love to hear from you. I married a Korean vet, and January we
had 50 years. Hoping to hear from you. Viola (Boyd) Mican,
1328 Norwood Drive, Ashtabula, Ohio 44004.
