measurements. The new high-purity quartz, TQH series, became available in 2005. Designed primarily<br />

nebulizers in Teflon PFA <strong>and</strong> polypropylene from Elemental Scientific. These microconcentric nebulizers are especially<br />

useful <strong>for</strong> small-volume samples <strong>and</strong> highly-corrosive solutions like HF. The Noordermeer v-groove nebulizer can<br />

h<strong>and</strong>le suspended solids of 10% or more without clogging. The Burgener MiraMist ® in Teflon extends that capability<br />

to highly-corrosive solutions.<br />

Meinhard Glass Products manufactures all kinds of spray chambers in glass <strong>and</strong> quartz: Scott double-pass, conical,<br />

cyclonic, double-pass cyclonic. We can fit your instrument or custom manufacture <strong>for</strong> your needs. We also offer<br />

Scott double-pass spray chambers from ESI in Teflon PFA <strong>for</strong> ultra-high-purity <strong>and</strong> corrosion resistance. ESI’s<br />

The High Efficiency Nebulizer (HEN)<br />

The HEN is especially well-suited <strong>for</strong> microsample analysis in µHPLC, CE, CIC <strong>and</strong> FIA. It exhibits detection limits<br />

comparable to those of a st<strong>and</strong>ard MEINHARD ® nebulizer while consuming 25 times less sample (see table). It is<br />

designed to operate at 1 L/min argon <strong>and</strong> ~170 psig. The HEN can function reliability at liquid flow rates from 10 to<br />

1200 µL/min. The HEN fits st<strong>and</strong>ard spray chambers. The high-pressure fitting (Fit Kit #2) is recommended <strong>for</strong><br />

secure attachment of the nebulizer gas tubing. Chromatography unions (Fit Kits #1 <strong>and</strong> #1-Micro) are available to<br />

provide a minimum dead volume, leak-free connection to 1/16” column tubing. To order, request model HEN-170-<br />

The Direct Injection High Efficiency Nebulizer (DIHEN)<br />

The DIHEN is a pneumatic micronebulizer designed to introduce micro-volumes of sample solutions directly into an<br />

inductively coupled plasma (<strong>ICP</strong>) or inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (<strong>ICP</strong>MS). The DIHEN-<strong>ICP</strong>MS<br />

approach is particularly well suited <strong>for</strong> ultratrace isotope <strong>and</strong> elemental analysis of sample types that are of limited<br />

volume, toxic, or expensive, or that exhibit speciation interferences. The DIHEN may be used as a micronebulizer in<br />

other atomic spectroscopy techniques such as flame photometry.<br />

Two accessories well-suited <strong>for</strong> the DIHEN: The chromatography union, Fit Kit #1-Micro, is an easy <strong>and</strong> convenient<br />

method to reduce dead volume in the sample introduction system to less than 10 µL. The high pressure reducing<br />

union, Fit Kit #2, allows easy connection of a high-pressure Argon line to the sidearm of the DIHEN.<br />

Advantages of the DIHEN: The advantages of the DIHEN are its ability to introduce microvolumes into plasmas at 1-<br />

100 µL/min, with relatively small aerosol droplet size, <strong>and</strong> with nearly 100% use of the sample. It is also highly<br />

suitable <strong>for</strong> the analysis of volatile solvents, avoiding interferences which occur in conventional spray chambers.<br />

NEBULIZER OPERATION:<br />

The MEINHARD ® nebulizer will aspirate liquid sample naturally when the rated flow of gas is directed into the<br />

sidearm <strong>and</strong> a sample feed is connected to the liquid input. All models may be operated with externally<br />

pumped analyte provided the sample flow is not significantly below the natural aspiration rate. Calibrations<br />

reflect a st<strong>and</strong>ard operational reference <strong>and</strong> are not intended as limitations on conditions of use, which can<br />

vary widely. Operation can be optimized <strong>for</strong> specific instruments.<br />

NEBULIZER ACCESSORIES:<br />

Fit Kit #1<br />

Union, ferrules, <strong>and</strong> Tefzel tubing (1/16”) to connect 1/16” sample<br />

tubing to Small Bore liquid input tube. A butt-fitting provides<br />

essentially continuous inside diameter between the sample tubing<br />

<strong>and</strong> the solution capillary. For use with SB option, HEN, <strong>and</strong> DIHEN<br />

Fit Kit #1 Micro<br />

PC3 Peltier Cooler <strong>for</strong> Cyclonic Spray Chambers<br />

The PC3 is a small, simple, <strong>and</strong> robust cooler <strong>for</strong> <strong>ICP</strong>-MS <strong>and</strong> <strong>ICP</strong>-0ES cyclonic spray chambers. The PC3 cools<br />

the outer walls of the cyclonic spray chamber to a constant temperature enhancing long-term signal stability,<br />

reducing polyatomic ion interferences such as oxides <strong>and</strong> reducing solvent loading especially when volatile organic<br />

solvents are analyzed. The cyclonic spray chamber offers the advantages of low memory effects, fast rinse-out<br />

<strong>and</strong>, in many cases, higher sample transport efficiency.<br />

Apex High-Sensitivity System<br />

Elemental Scientific has designed the new Apex family of high sensitivity <strong>and</strong> low background<br />

sample introduction systems to increase signal intensity while often reducing relative<br />

background contamination <strong>for</strong> <strong>ICP</strong>MS <strong>and</strong> <strong>ICP</strong>AES analyses. The Apex improves sensitivity<br />

primarily by increasing both sample transport efficiency <strong>and</strong> the quality of aerosol introduced to<br />

the <strong>ICP</strong> instrument. The Apex controls background contamination by employing high-purity,<br />

inert, <strong>and</strong> o-ring-free wetted surfaces. When combined with a self-aspirating MicroFlow PFA<br />

nebulizer even aggressive <strong>and</strong> concentrated chemicals may be analyzed at very high sensitivity<br />

<strong>and</strong> very low contamination.<br />

Apex Q High-Sensitivity System<br />

The Apex may be used with nebulizers operating over a wide range of sample flow rates from 20<br />

µL/min to over 1 mL/min. The nebulizers may be either self-aspirated or pumped.<br />

Operation<br />

Liquid samples are nebulized into a patent-pending spray chamber <strong>and</strong> desolvation system where<br />

the sample aerosol is efficiently conditioned to produce an intense <strong>and</strong> uni<strong>for</strong>m aerosol that is<br />

transported to the <strong>ICP</strong>.<br />

When compared to conventional <strong>ICP</strong>MS sample introduction systems the Apex will typically<br />

increase <strong>ICP</strong>MS sensitivity by approximately 10x when using a 300 µL/min nebulizer <strong>and</strong> by<br />

approximately 3x when using a 100 µL/min nebulizer. These improvement factors are in spite of<br />

the lower Apex sample consumption rate. <strong>ICP</strong>-MS detection limits are in the sub-ppt to sub-ppq<br />

range <strong>for</strong> most elements.<br />

<strong>ICP</strong>AES detection limits can be improved by up to a factor of 6-10 when operating at 1 ml/min<br />

using a MicroFlow PFA or PolyPro ST nebulizer together with the Apex. Alternatively, the<br />

combination of a low flow nebulizer with the Apex maintains <strong>ICP</strong>-AES sensitivity while reducing<br />

sample consumption by a factor of 5 to 10, improving <strong>ICP</strong>-AES determinations when the volume<br />

of sample is limited.


Models<br />

The Apex sample introduction system is available in four basic models: Apex E, Apex Q, Apex<br />

HF, <strong>and</strong> Apex IR.<br />

The Apex E has been primarily designed as an inlet system <strong>for</strong> <strong>ICP</strong>-AES. the Apex E is very simple<br />

to use with only 1 switch operation <strong>and</strong> has a Pyrex flow path to produce a relatively low cost,<br />

high sensitivity inlet system. The Apex E is supplied with either PolyPro-ST of PFA-ST nebulizers.<br />

The Apex Q has an o-ring-free quartz flow path <strong>for</strong> high sensitivity <strong>and</strong> low background <strong>for</strong><br />

samples that do not contain hydrofluoric acid. The Apex Q gives the fastest rinse-out of any high<br />

sensitivity <strong>ICP</strong> introduction system. Two MicroFlow PFA nebulizers are included with the Apex Q.<br />

The Apex HF uses a high-purity PFA Teflon flow path to provide resistance to hydrofluoric acid.<br />

The Apex HF is recommended <strong>for</strong> many geochemistry <strong>and</strong> semiconductor applications where<br />

samples containing HF are analyzed. Two MicroFlow PFA nebulizers are included with the Apex<br />

HF.<br />

The Apex IR has a quartz flow path <strong>and</strong> includes the ApexAreo membrane desolvation module<br />

<strong>for</strong> reducing <strong>ICP</strong>MS spectral interferences that arise from solvent-derived polyatomic ions. Three<br />

MicroFlow PFA nebulizers: 50, 100, <strong>and</strong> 300 µL/min are included with the Apex IR.<br />

Per<strong>for</strong>mance Data<br />

The patent pending design of the sample flow path ensures minimal memory effects with rinseouts<br />

comparable if not faster than simple cyclonic systems, even with initial higher count rates.


Enhanced stability, which can be further improved with the use of the Apex IR or the addition of<br />

the ACM to the other Apex plat<strong>for</strong>ms.<br />

Improvements in sensitivity that can range from 3x to 15x depending on the sample flow rate<br />

used. The Apex is over 90% efficient at transporting the sample analyte to the plasma.<br />

Capable of running with high matrix samples such as 10% Urine, giving 3.2% rsd after 10 x 5 min<br />

sample replicates.


Membrane Desolvation<br />

An optional ACM Nafion fluoropolymer membrane desolvation module is available to remove<br />

residual solvent vapor in the sample aerosol stream. The ACM membrane module may be used<br />

with any of the <strong>ICP</strong>-MS Apex models. The membrane module is easily demounted <strong>for</strong> the Apex<br />

exit port. This feature allows the Apex to be used either with or without a membrane to best suit<br />

specific analytical applications.<br />

With the ACM membrane desolvation module oxides <strong>and</strong> other <strong>ICP</strong>-MS interferences are further<br />

reduced. For example, CeO+/Ce+ was reduced to < 0.1% when using the Apex with membrane<br />

6. Operation<br />

The Perimax 12 peristaltic pump is very simple to operate. The pump tubing is placed around the pump head <strong>and</strong> secured<br />

at each end in a tubing retainer. Pressure against the tubing in each channel is adjusted with a fine screw on the pressure<br />

bracket. Function keys are provided <strong>for</strong> ON/OFF <strong>and</strong> RIGHT/LEFT rotation. The rotational speed of the pump head is<br />

continuously adjustable via a 10-turn potentiometer. The digital indicator (0-999) ensures a reproducible speed setting<br />

<strong>and</strong>, there<strong>for</strong>e, a precise flow rate. A high-speed key provides <strong>for</strong> brief operation at maximum speed, <strong>for</strong> example, to<br />

obtain fast wash-out of the tubing when changing to another liquid.<br />

Perimax 16 Antipuls Pump Head<br />

The 16-roller pump head consists of two half-channels of 8 rollers each in which the rollers are arranged with a 180-<br />

degree phase displacement. A piece of pump tubing is inserted into each half-channel; downstream from the pump head,<br />

a Y-fitting combines the half-channels. Consequently, a peak in one half-channel is cancelled by a trough in the parallel<br />

half-channel so that the combined flow produced is completely pulsation-free. The Perimax 16/2 can be operated with 2<br />

pulse-free channels, 4 pulsating channels, or one pulse-free <strong>and</strong> 2 pulsating channels. Also available are the Perimax<br />

16/1 <strong>and</strong> Perimax 16/3.<br />

Sets of pre-assembled pump tubing are available in a variety of sizes <strong>for</strong> the Perimax 16 Antipuls. A Y-fitting splits the<br />

flow between two half-channels; a second Y-fitting recombines the flows downstream.

Pump head<br />

This pump head has two groups of eight<br />

rollers, with the groups offset from each<br />

other. The incoming flow is split between two<br />

pieces of peristaltic pump tubing, one running<br />

over each of the roller groups, then<br />

recombined downstream from the head. The<br />

wave peak in one tube coincides with the<br />

wave trough in the other tube so that peaks<br />

<strong>and</strong> troughs cancel each other. The resulting<br />

flow is there<strong>for</strong>e completely free from<br />

pulsations.<br />

The roller head has 16 rollers <strong>and</strong> provides<br />

four half channels of 8 rollers each, with two<br />

phase-displaced tubes being combined. The<br />

16/4 pump can then be operated either with 2<br />

pulse-free channels or with 4 slightly pulsing<br />

channels.<br />

Portable Cleanroom Technology<br />

Growing product quality <strong>and</strong> reliability requirements are making it<br />

increasingly necessary to manufacture or process products in particlefree<br />

conditions these days. Cleanroom technology has come to play an<br />

important role in practically all high-tech sectors, including chemical<br />

production, biotechnology, genetic engineering, microelectronics, the<br />

optical industry, precision engineering <strong>and</strong> the food, filling <strong>and</strong><br />

packaging industries. For this reason, cleanrooms have become<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ard in many branches of production, but entail high costs in terms<br />

of installation <strong>and</strong> operation.<br />

In developing the Laminar FLOW BOX Basic, Spetec ® made it its goal to<br />

produce a simple <strong>and</strong> inexpensive solution <strong>for</strong> virtually particle-free<br />

workspaces. The result of our ef<strong>for</strong>ts, the Laminar FLOW BOX Basic, is<br />

a portable cleanroom that can be manufactured according to individual<br />

size requirements. No matter whether you wish to protect analysis<br />

samples from contamination or need dust-free conditions <strong>for</strong> other<br />

applications, the Spetec ® Laminar FLOW BOX Basic represents a<br />

cleanroom workstation that can be adapted to your specific wishes <strong>and</strong><br />

requirements.<br />

The Spetec ® Laminar FLOW BOX Basic features a filter equipped with an HF-type laminar air flow director offering<br />

99.995% dust collection efficiency. In other words, the filter screens out at least 99.995% of all particles measuring 0.5<br />

µm in size, or larger, <strong>and</strong> at least 99.95% of all particles measuring 0.21 µm. The flow velocity of the Spetec ® Laminar<br />

FLOW BOX Basic is 0.45 m/sec. as tested <strong>and</strong> certificated by the Fraunhofer Institute <strong>for</strong> Production Engineering <strong>and</strong><br />

A new device developed at Savannah River<br />

National Laboratory collects <strong>and</strong> concentrates<br />

airborne metals into a liquid sample <strong>for</strong><br />

onsite/real time or laboratory analysis. Useful as<br />

a tool <strong>for</strong> coupling <strong>ICP</strong>MS/OES to airborne particle<br />

analysis, the ALPXS can offer near real time<br />

sampling <strong>and</strong> analysis of welding fumes,<br />

workplace exposure measurement, or<br />

environmental metal particle monitoring. The<br />

device is portable <strong>and</strong> consumes only 12 watts of<br />

power.<br />

Uses wet electrostatic precipitation to separate<br />

Principle of Operation<br />

Air is drawn into the ionization chamber.<br />

Particles assume a negative charge.<br />

Collection electrode is maintained at<br />

positive high voltage <strong>and</strong> particles are<br />

attracted to it.<br />

As the particles migrate towards the<br />

collection electrode they are trapped by<br />

the liquid layer that continuously washes<br />

the surface of the collection electrode <strong>and</strong><br />

accumulate.<br />

An auxiliary pump transports a very small<br />

fraction of the reservoir volume to an<br />

<strong>ICP</strong>MS, <strong>ICP</strong>-OES or AA <strong>for</strong> determination of<br />

Developed at the Institute of Physics of the Earth (Paris, France), the primary function of the EVAPOCLEAN is<br />

to preconcentrate various chemical solutions under controlled conditions. Evaporation (at temperatures up<br />

to 250 °C) <strong>and</strong> immediate condensation occur in a closed system that does not exchange with laboratory<br />

air.<br />

The EVAPOCLEAN device allows the analyst to process organic solvents, aqueous solutions, acidic <strong>and</strong><br />

alkaline solutions, <strong>and</strong> concentrated solutions which derive from the dissolution of various materials with<br />

high-purity grade fluoropolymer materials, machined under controlled conditions. They do not<br />

emit dust particles.<br />

Depending on the EVAPOCLEAN model that is chosen, 1 to 12 samples can be processed simultaneously or<br />

independently, without risk of cross-contamination. It is possible to evaporate to dryness or to leave a small<br />

residual volume of the evaporating liquid, to concentrate solutions, <strong>and</strong> to purify liquid reagents.<br />

The top face of EVAPOCLEAN devices is equipped with ports to allow acid digestion of samples <strong>and</strong><br />

cleaning of jars by reflux of acid vapor or water vapor in the closed container.<br />

The basic EVAPOCLEAN incorporates a simple controller which raises the block temperature to a specified<br />

temperature <strong>and</strong> holds the temperature <strong>for</strong> a specified period, after which the EVAPOCLEAN will cool to<br />

EASYDIGEST<br />

ANALAB has designed EASYDIGEST devices <strong>for</strong> wet digestion or wet extraction of samples<br />

CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE SINCE 1984<br />

Analytical Reference Materials International’s (ARMI) primary objective has<br />

been to develop <strong>and</strong> implement an industry acceptable system <strong>for</strong> the characterization<br />

<strong>and</strong> certification of metal alloy materials. The resulting Certified Reference Materials<br />

(CRMs) af<strong>for</strong>d the scientific community an unequivocal level of confidence.<br />

Equally important is our desire that the final certified results be traceable to national<br />

<strong>and</strong>/or international certifying bodies with emphasis on our own National Institute<br />

of St<strong>and</strong>ards & Technology (NIST).<br />

In the beginning, the Company purchased metal certified materials from recognized<br />

certifying bodies <strong>and</strong> produced what is now known the world over as the “thin X-ray<br />

disk” specific to X-ray analytical procedures. Because of the success of the thin X-<br />

ray disks during the late 1980s, dem<strong>and</strong> dramatically increased <strong>for</strong> more of a variety<br />

of products to address the needs of all analytical techniques. The Company reached a<br />

point where it became obvious that its dependence on others to supply materials <strong>and</strong><br />

data limited its ability to meet the market’s existing <strong>and</strong> future needs. There<strong>for</strong>e, in<br />

1989 the ARMI Inter-Laboratory Analysis Program (ILAP) was <strong>for</strong>med.<br />

The ILAP originated <strong>and</strong> remains today as the only totally voluntary organization<br />

in private industry dedicated to the production <strong>and</strong> development of quality<br />

CRMs. ILAP is the classic example of industry working together <strong>for</strong> a common<br />

goal. The membership now consists of experts from over 70 laboratories representing<br />

major metal producers, commercial laboratories, aerospace, <strong>and</strong> general industry<br />

from the US, Canada <strong>and</strong> other countries in Europe <strong>and</strong> Asia. The group is comprised<br />

of wonderfully dedicated people who are experts in the analysis of metals <strong>and</strong><br />

metal alloys.<br />

Today ARMI’s inventory consists of more than 600 different CRMs that include carbon<br />

steels, low alloy steels, stainless <strong>and</strong> high temperature steels, nickel, cobalt, copper,<br />

aluminum, titanium, <strong>and</strong> hydrocarbon based materials. ARMI’s CRMs (IARMs)<br />

can be found in the application laboratories of most of the major instrument manufacturers<br />

around the world.<br />

Finally, one of the major factors contributing to the success of the ARMI/ILAP program<br />

over the years has been “you”, the analytical consumer. You have voiced your<br />

opinions as well as your needs. The personnel at ARMI, as well as the ILAP members,<br />
