DEAR CLONTARF RESIDENT:
The Clontarf area deserves strong and effective political
representation. Your local Labour Party team are working hard
all year round to represent your interests on Dublin City
Council and in Dáil Éireann. This newsletter outlines just some
of our ongoing work on your behalf. If you wish to discuss any
matter of concern to you, be it local or national, please do not
hesitate to contact us at any time.
DEFENDING THE
SEAFRONT AND
DUBLIN BAY –
CLONTARF FLOOD
DEFENCES CAMPAIGN
■ In December 2011 a motion proposed by Councillor Jane Horgan-Jones effectively
stopped the Council’s plans to build the controversial flood defences on our seafront.
■ This would not have been possible without the huge community support and the
tireless work of hundreds of volunteers.
■ The campaign for the flood defences we all want for our area is well underway – and
we will continue to work with the community to achieve that goal over the coming
months and years.
■ We are also continuing to support the community in the campaign to protect and
preserve Dublin Bay against any proposed infill.
DEFENDING OUR COMMUNITIES – LOCAL
POLICING FORUM IN HOLLYBROOK
■ In response to community concerns about anti-social behaviour,
we have set up a local Community Policing for Hollybrook Road
with the support of the Clontarf Gardaí.
■ This follows on from the successful Anti-Head Shop campaign in
that area.
■ The group will continue to meet on a regular basis to monitor
anti-social behaviour and develop a whole of the community
response to tackle the problem.
■ If you would like a community policing forum set up in your
area, please get in touch with us.
COMMUNITY GAMES IN
CLONTARF TAKES OFF
■ For the first time in many years, we have an
active Clontarf Community Games
organisation again.
■ In its first year, the group (made up of
volunteers and parents) has gone from
strength to strength, with teams of local
children participating in swimming, athletics,
cross-country and the table quiz event and
even winning medals at the Dublin finals.
DEFENDING OLDER PEOPLE’S INTERESTS –
CLONTARF SENIOR CITIZENS FORUM
■ We will shortly set up a Senior Citizens Forum in Clontarf similar to those we
already run in Donnycarney and Marino.
■ Through this group, we hope to maintain regular contact with the senior
community in Clontarf and raise their concerns directly with both the City Council
and with the government to ensure their voices are heard by those in power.
■ We have also arranged trips to Dáil Eireann for members of the senior citizens fora
and hope to continue this initiative in Clontarf.
■ If you have an interest in getting involved in this forum please do not hesitate to
contact us.
DEVELOPING BUSINESS AND TOURISM STRATEGY
FOR CLONTARF
■ We are working closely with the Clontarf Business Association to encourage a
long-term business and retail strategy for local businesses
■ Encouraging a national and local tourism strategy establishing Clontarf as a
distinct local area on the tourist trail
■ Using the 2013 ‘Gathering’ and ‘Decade of Commerations’ to maximum local
effect.
CHERISHING CLONTARF HISTORY AND HERITAGE
■ We are pro-actively working with Dublin City Council and Governmental Departments
to ensure that the anniversary of the 1014 Battle of Clontarf gets the support it
deserves
■ We are promoting the local literary heritage by encouraging Dublin City Council to
establish a permanent memorial to Bram Stoker in the Clontarf / Marino area.
■ Promoting the vibrant history of the Labour Party in the Clontarf area with an annual
event at the grave of Tom Johnson at his grave in Castle Avenue, and also by celebrating
the achievements of former Clontarf resident Evelyn Owens with an annual award in
her name.
BEST WISHES TO SCOIL UÍ CHONAILL IN CELEBRITY BAINISTEOIR
■ We were delighted to learn that one of our local GAA clubs Scoil Uí Chonaill has
been chosen to participate in this summer's Celebrity Bainisteoir competition
which will feature on RTÉ television
■ Both Scoil Uí Chonaill CLG and Clontarf GAA club contribute greatly to youth
development in this community and are justly proud of their contribution to
Dublin teams that will compete in Championship action throughout the summer
■ We were delighted to celebrate the achievements of Belgrove Senior Girls team
in winning their Cumann na mBunscol competition with a reception in the
Mansion House last December
■ The sporting heritage of Clontarf in GAA, rugby, soccer, hockey, cricket and other
sports goes from strength to strength and if you feel we can support your club in
anyway please do not hesitate to contact us.
