Division of Adult & Continuing Education @ LaGuardia Community College Helping Save - and Change - Lives! Health Christine Alvarez Director, Pre-Hospital Care Programs A chance occurrence while doing volunteer work in Central America led this LaGuardia veteran down a very successful career path, and more importantly, has helped save countless lives. After an ambulance was donated to her organization in Honduras, Christine Alvarez, Director of Pre- Hospital Care Programs in the Division of Adult and Continuing Education, made sure it was put to good use, teaching first aid to the local residents and assisting with setting up a local ambulance department. Upon returning to the U.S., she decided to enroll in an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course and started to work for the New York City EMS in Midtown Manhattan. She furthered her education by becoming a paramedic and worked in various New York City hospitals for several years. In 1987 she began teaching in LaGuardia’s EMT program and within two years was appointed director. “When people have a medical emergency in a pre-hospital setting, they need dedicated and skilled healthcare professionals to assist them. We prepare these professionals to meet these challenges,” says Ms. Alvarez. “They will be part of a healthcare career ladder which will allow them to continue to build their expertise and job opportunities as well.” In addition to the EMT and Paramedic Programs, Ms. Alvarez also runs the Medical Office Clinical Technician Program, which trains individuals to become certified EKG Technicians and Phlebotomists, integral members of hospital and /or physician-directed healthcare teams. “ What is most rewarding is when my graduates come back to the school or write to tell me about saving a patient—or themselves—because of their ” training at LaGuardia. Emergency Healthcare Programs Lives often depend on the prompt response and expert care of emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics. Accidents, heart attacks, childbirth and trauma all require immediate medical intervention. Throughout New York City, 24/7, EMTs and paramedics respond to emergencies, treating and then transporting the sick or injured. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic Prepare yourself with the knowledge and skills needed to render patient care on an emergency ambulance. When you successfully complete the course, you will take your NYS Department of Health Certification Exam for EMT Basic. This is a 4 month course and is necessary to advance to the one year program of paramedic education. We are the only NYC paramedic program with a 100% pass rate on the NYS Certification Exam for twelve years! Clinical rotation opportunities are available in Queens, Manhattan, Bronx and Brooklyn. Only LaGuardia offers you the choice of a college degree or certificate program. You must have 6 months or 200 hours of patient care experience on an ambulance to qualify for admission.
