This program is offered to Deaf students who wish to have an opportunity for vocational training and personal enrichment. Members of the signing community are welcomed.<br />

ASL Portfolio: <strong>The</strong> Five Competencies<br />

Build your language skills and enhance your ASL portfolio by exploring and examining<br />

the five main competencies of American Sign Language that allow you to be an active<br />

member of the community. <strong>The</strong> 5 C’s that guide this course are: Communication,<br />

Cultures, Comparisons, Connections, and Communities.<br />

NEW Mentoring: Preparation for ASLTA Provisional<br />

Certificate<br />

Prepare for the American Sign Language Teaching Association (ASLTA) Provisional<br />

Certificate through mentoring in a one to one or small group setting. Receive guidance<br />

and support from an ASLTA certified instructor in assessing your teaching experience and<br />

gathering the information and materials required to prepare your ASLTA application.<br />

Prerequisite: Minimum of two years ASL teaching experience.<br />

American Sign Language<br />

<strong>The</strong> American Sign Language Program at <strong>LaGuardia</strong> involves a 5 course sequence focusing on communication with Deaf individuals. Using the Vista Signing Naturally Curriculum, you<br />

will learn to improve your receptive and expressive ASL and fingerspelling skills. <strong>You</strong> will also acquire sign vocabulary, learn about Deaf Culture, and practice ASL grammar, including<br />

structure development and related facial/gestural expressions and conversational behaviors. If you have already started your sign language education, you will be screened for<br />
