Meet Your New
Alumni Board
Officers
Bill Matthews, ’90, outgoing President of
La Salle’s Alumni Association, says he feels
confident that he is turning over the reins to
a promising new team of Alumni officers.
“We’ve accomplished a great deal in the past
two years, which was a process of building
upon what the officers before me had
done,” Matthews said. “I have great confidence
that the officers who follow me will
continue to build upon that success.”
Mike Diccicco, ’71, who served as Vice
President under Matthews, will become the
new President on July 1. Jim Ahern, ’70, former
Treasurer, will rise to Vice President. Tom
Leonard, ’70, and Tim Tilson, ’94, will serve as
Treasurer and Secretary, respectively.
Diccicco, who is the owner and President of
Diccicco Battista Communications in
Horsham, Pa., started his involvement with
Alumni Association activities several years
ago. It didn’t take long for him to assume a
leadership role within the organization, culminating
in his election to a two-year term as
President.
“I have really enjoyed getting reconnected
with the University and with people I knew
from my time at La Salle, as well as a large
number of new people,” Diccicco said.
Diccicco, who lives in Doylestown, Pa., with
his wife, Fran Jacob Diccicco, ’74, said his
story of reconnecting with La Salle can be a
model for others who may have lost touch
with their alma mater. Helping alumni find
their way back to involvement with the
University is one of Diccicco’s goals for his
term as President.
IN THIS
ISSUE
“We’re trying to
widen the circle
and build involvement
and participation
among
alumni, connecting
more people with
La Salle and with
other alumni,” said
Diccicco, a father
of two. “You’d be
surprised how
many people have
fellow alumni from
La Salle living within
a few blocks of
where they live,
and they may not
even know it.”
Ahern, a Vice
President for
Adecco, the world’s
largest staffing company, said many graduates’
business contacts and travel schedules
make them perfect ambassadors for La Salle,
and one of his goals is to nurture that form
of outreach to alumni.
“We can be more visible and more inclusive
in terms of reaching out to more people
locally and throughout the United States,”
said Ahern, who has three sons and lives in
Jenkintown, Pa., with his wife, Judy Stanton
Ahern, ’73. “We need to be advocates for the
University in the general public by helping to
recruit students and meeting with alums
when we travel.”
Tim Tilson has been able to do just that without
leaving the community in Flourtown, Pa.,
where he lives with his wife, Carol, and their
two young daughters. By using the Internet,
the mylasalle Alumni WebPortal, and oldfashioned
face-to-face meetings, La Salle can
strengthen its bond with alumni, Tilson said.
“In my small neighborhood, there are six
La Salle alums, and they’ve all come back to
Tilson, who sells self-insured health benefits
nationally for AmeriHealth Administrators.
“It comes down to helping La Salle learn
more about its alums and increasing the
number of alums who connect with La Salle.”
Leonard has his children to thank for helping
him to stay involved with La Salle (three of
his four children have attended La Salle). He’s
served on numerous committees and recruited
students to work at PricewaterhouseCoopers,
where he is a Partner. Leonard says he’s
always seeking ways to give back to a place
that gave him so much.
“When you look at the successes I’ve had in
my life, they’re attributable to my education
at La Salle,” said Leonard, who lives in
Media, Pa., with his wife, Jean. “I think you
owe something back.”
Diccicco has high hopes for his team of
Alumni officers over the next few years.
“This is a strong core of people who are the
staunchest supporters of La Salle. It’s a group
that will be deafening in its support of the
University and the things that it stands for,”
Diccicco said. “All of us bleed blue and gold.”

A MESSAGE FROM THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT Bill Matthews, ’90
Dear Alumni:
This letter has been more difficult to write
than the others that I have sent to you
throughout my time as President; I realize
that these two years have passed very quickly
and this will be my last opportunity to
address you in my role as President of the
La Salle University Alumni Association. First,
I want to thank you for the opportunity
that my family and I have had to serve you.
I have spent much time charting the course
for our alumni programs at La Salle, attending
events both near and far, and growing
the number of active alumni members.
Nancy and I, along with our three boys,
Billy, Christopher, and Zach, have enjoyed all
of our time working for you and with you.
I congratulate Mike Diccicco, ’71, Jim Ahern,
’70, Tim Tilson, ’94, and Tom Leonard, ’70, on
their election as officers of the Alumni
Association for the next two years. I can tell
you without reservation that you will be
well-served by a group of dedicated men
who will build on our successes and continue
to bring new and interesting programs to
you. I also want to thank Jim Gulick, ’89,
Assistant Vice President for Alumni Relations,
and his staff for their tremendous efforts in
advancing alumni relations at La Salle
University. In addition, we have the full support
of the University and the Board of
Trustees. Their endorsement of our programs
and initiatives has fostered our success.
Alumni Association President Bill Matthews III, '90, (center)
and Bill Matthews Jr., '75, (celebrating their 15th and
30th Reunions this year) enjoy Reunion ’04 with
sister/daughter Maryann Matthews Malloy, '89, (at her
reunion) and the Matthews kids.
These past two years, we have brought you
dynamic and varied programming for alumni
of all ages. We have improved the way
we communicate with you and continue to
improve the ways all of you can communicate
with one another through the use of
the mylasalle Alumni WebPortal. I urge you
to explore mylasalle today. We have also
focused on community service, and I will
remain committed to future projects in and
around the University community. The
University is a vital player in the community
around 20th and Olney, and therefore, I
feel it is important for the Alumni
Association to partner with the University
and community leaders to continue the
good work we’ve begun.
Your Alumni Board of Directors is one of the
strongest groups that the Alumni
Association has ever been blessed with. The
Alumni Board is comprised of individuals
who want to give back to a university that
did so much for them as students. Working
with my fellow Board members, we have
achieved many successes during my time as
President of the Alumni Association.
As we enter the summer season, we continue
to offer many great ways for you, your
family, classmates, and friends to get
together. Join Nancy, the boys, and me at
Camden Yards July 9 as our Baltimore Club
hosts a picnic followed by the Orioles vs. the
World Champion Boston Red Sox. In addition,
our Downtown Club will host a
Business Persons Special as the Phillies take
on the Dodgers July 21. Of course, we will
have our annual Young Alumni Beach Party
in Avalon, N.J., on Aug. 27. Finally, mark
your calendars for Oct. 29 and plan to
return to campus for Homecoming.
This experience has been truly rewarding
for me and my family, and I thank you for
the wonderful opportunity I have had to
serve you.
SPOTLIGHT ON ALUMNI
A FEW QUESTIONS WITH ... CHRIS ADAMS, ’88
Degree: B.A. in English
Currently: Married (wife, Rebecca) with two children (William, 4,
and Caroline, 2); Executive Vice President, Sherry-Lehmann, Inc.,
in New York (Zagat’s No. 1 wine merchant). Resides in Briarcliff
Manor, N.Y.
Family Connection: brother, Greg, ’86; father, Tom, ’58.
WHO OR WHAT WAS YOUR GREATEST
INFLUENCE AT LA SALLE?
Without a doubt it was the Christian Brothers “Dream Team” at
Roncalli on North 12th Street: Jack Dondero, Mike McGinniss, Joe
Burke, and Gerry Molyneaux. Spending time with those four guys
shaped my La Salle experience and my whole life.
MEMORABLE LA SALLE MOMENT:
My first meeting with my advisor,
Vince Kling. He was assigned to me as
a freshman, and like a perfect freshman,
I never went to see him. My first
semester sophomore year, I had him
for “Intro to American Literature,” and
he pulled me aside after the first class
and asked me if I knew what the hell I
was doing. It got easier from there.
WHAT’S YOUR
FAVORITE PHILLY SPOT?
20th and Olney.
IF YOU WEREN’T IN YOUR CURRENT
PROFESSION, YOU WOULD BE...
Teaching, which I did and loved for six years.
WHAT ARE YOU READING, WATCHING,
OR LISTENING TO?
Reading Wine and War by Donald and Petie Kladstrup and
Moneyball by Michael Lewis; for music, I’m currently revisiting
Chris Isaak’s Baja Sessions.
WHAT IS SOMETHING PEOPLE WOULD BE
SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU?
I’m an avid gardener.
WHO DO YOU ADMIRE
MOST? WHY?
My wife, Rebecca. When we met, she
was a successful magazine editor in
Manhattan, and today, she still manages
to occasionally write and edit,
while focusing on raising our two children.
She’s amazing.
Book Notes
Classic Irish Stories: Timeless Tales from
Ireland and Other Green Shores
Edited by Michael P. Quinlin, ’74
The Lyons Press, 2005; 279 pp., $9.95
This uncommon collection offers hidden
gems from Ireland’s past, shedding new
light on the illustrious literary history of the
Irish at home and abroad. In Classic Irish
Stories, readers can explore what it means to
be Irish through the words of both famous authors and lesserknown
ones, who are often difficult to find in anthologies and
deserve wider publication. Writers include short story masters Liam
O’Flaherty and Sarah Orne Jewett, poets William B. Yeats and
Samuel Lover, and novelists Arthur Conan Doyle and Bram Stoker.
The book also includes some of Ireland’s famous legends and stories
translated from ancient Irish texts by Lady Gregory, T. Crofton
Croker, and William Larminie. (from the publisher)
Michael P. Quinlin earned his bachelor’s degree in English from
La Salle University in 1974. In his acknowledgments in the beginning
of Classic Irish Stories, he thanks his former teachers who
taught him to love Irish literature. The first of those mentioned is
the late Brother Patrick Sheekey, F.S.C., ’29, a former Chair of
La Salle’s English Department and the namesake of the University’s
Sheekey Writing Center.
Quinlin is the founder and president of the Boston Irish Tourism
Association and creator of the Boston Irish Heritage Trail. He is the
author of Irish Boston: A Lively Look at Boston’s Colorful Irish Past
and Guide to the New England Irish. He has written hundreds of
articles on Irish culture,
politics, and history for
the Boston Globe,
Boston Herald, Irish
Echo, and Irish America
magazine. He lives in
Milton, Mass., with his
wife, Colette, and son,
Devin.
“Book Notes” is featured periodically
the last year. We invite you to e-mail
