Major Duties and Responsibilities 

General Judicial (30%) 

1. Adjudicates on a variety of applications made by Parties to litigation before and after the trial and exercises the same 

powers as a Judge in Chambers. 

2. Adjudicates on Judgment Summonses under the Debtors Act. 

3. Adjudicates in matters where a Judge has ordered that there be a taking of Accounts involving the taking of evidence and 

the examination and cross-examination of witnesses. 

4. Settles the Record of Appeal in appeals to the Court of Appeal Court and the Privy Council and ensures that the Records of 

Appeal to the Privy Council are prepared in accordance with Privy Council Rules. 

5. Grants extensions of time for settling Records of Appeal. 

6. Inquires into and determines issues relating to claims under the Workmen’s Compensation Act referred to him/her by the 

Commissioner of Workman’s Compensation who is the master.

As Probate Registrar* (30%) 

1. Approves and grants applications for Probate or Letters of Administration where these are not contested and revokes same 

where necessary. 

2. Is responsible for the planning, directing and co-ordinating of the activities of the Probate registry. 

3. Is custodian of all Wills and Codicils of living persons that are deposited for safekeeping. 

As Marshal* 

1. Carries out orders of the Court generally and conducts or directs the conduct of auctions pursuant to Orders of the Court or 

after levy. These include auctions of ships which have been arrested pursuant to an order of the court. 

2. In Admiralty matters, applies to the Court for directions where the ship/vessel is abandoned or where disputes arise. 

3. Attends all judicial executions and ensures the carrying out of sentences of death according to law and established practice. 

4. Arranges for the sequestration of juries and organizes transport, accommodation and meals for the jurors and is responsible 

for their comfort and safety. 

5. Is responsible for the granting of licenses to bailiffs and keeping a Register of Baliffs. 

6. Performs statutory functions under the Absconding Debtors Act.

Administrative (20%) 

1. Is a member of the Court Administrative Unit. 

2. Keeps register of approved Court interpreters and procures their services as needed. 

3. Assigns registrars in consultation with the Chief Justice and gives special assignments to the Deputy and Assistant 

Registrars and reviews their work where deemed necessary. 

4. Is responsible for appraisal of legal staff. Contributes to performance support of non-legal staff e.g. Clerk of Appeals, Clerk 

to the Judges, Principal Officers, 2nd Deputy Marshals and Clerical Staff. 

5. Custodian of all exhibits in criminal matters including money, ammunition and narcotics. 

6. Is the trustee of monies deposited by litigants and responsible for investing such monies in accordance with the order of the 

Court. 

7. Is responsible for arranging for the formal admission to practice of persons who have complied with the requirements of the 

Legal Profession Act. Peruses and certifies applications for admission and signs all enrolment certificates. 

8. Prepares draft calendar of sittings of the High Court and arranges for the calendar when approved by the Chief Justice to 

be published in the Gazette. 

9. Is ex-officio Commissioner of Affidavits and Justice of the Peace. 

10. Issues certificates that civil actions which have been dormant for a prescribed period of time, stand dismissed in accordance 

with the Rules of the Supreme Court. 

11. Is responsible for the production of the Lists of Cases for Trial Court and Chamber Court which are prepared by the 

Clerks IV of the several sections i.e. Civil, Criminal and Matrimonial and amends the Lists of cases after consultation with 

Judges. 

Other related duties as required. 

Salary: 

Group J2: $24,400 per month.
