CHESHIRE ACF GREATER MANCHESTER ACF ARMY CADET PREPARES FOR FUTURE Eco friendly Cadets As the sun rose on a freezing January morning in Mobberley, cadets from B Coy Cheshire ACF prepared for the days exercise. Having received instruction in the latest weapon system they prepared to face the enemy. However this was no ordinary exercise but a war on climate change. The mission: to plant 1200 young trees which was to be accomplished in under six hours. Officers and adults along with members of the Woodland Trust were on hand to lend support and a not inconsiderable amount of muscle and sweat. The Lord Lieutenant Mr David Briggs, whose grounds were used for the tree planting, said: “These young trees represent the future, just as these young people represent our hope for the future.” The sentiments were echoed by Col Frank Hewitt, a former Comdt of Cheshire ACF. Cdt Sgt Maj Joe Devereux-Kelly of 4 Company, Greater Manchester Army Cadet Force (GMACF), is currently preparing for a future beyond forthcoming summer exams, a future he feels especially well-prepared for following six and half years with the Army Cadets. He has taken full advantage of the training courses offered by the Army Cadets at both local and national level, by attending the Master Cadet and Land Command Courses and the Cadet Senior Instr uctor’s Course. Perhaps more recognisable to the general public, he has also participated in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Scheme, the BTEC Award scheme and passed his Advanced First Aid Course. And if that looks like a lot of additional time in the training room, he has also travelled abroad with the ACF, attending Remembrance Parades in France and Belgium and a 19 day adventurous training expedition in the Western United States. Meanwhile, within the Salfordcentred 4 Company GMACF, he is responsible for ensuring good conduct and discipline amongst the 175 cadets training in eight different detachments. In the future he hopes to progress to University to read History, before progressing to a commission in the Royal Marines. 30 THE VOLUNTEER www.nwrfca.org.uk

The charity provides items that will enable them to get by whilst living on the streets and offers a placement in one of their shelters. The charity also offers rehabilitation support that includes advice on housing, employment, medical treatment for conditions such as PTSD, alcohol and drug abuse. The cadets at Bury Detachment GMACF, who proudly wear the hackle of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, thought that this charity was a cause worthy of their support. These very proactive youngsters collected various items that the charity will use and pass onto to the men and women who have found themselves down on their luck after selfless service with the Armed Forces. Under the guidance of Lt Anita Taylor and Detachment Commander, SMI Douglas Craddock, Bury ACF training team recently presented the charity with five large boxes of items including thermal clothing, socks, toiletries, packaged soups, food provisions and sweets. During the evening presentations were given by Bill Murray, director of SOTS, ex-2 Para Cpl Les Standish and Capt Sharif Gulsher a patron of SOTS. Both Bill and Capt Gulsher spoke about the plight of many ex-service employees whose home became a pavement or a shop doorway. Les, a Falklands War veteran, was himself rescued by SOTS and spoke in detail about how he became homeless, his fight for survival and the difficulties he was forced to live with whilst suffering with PTSD. Lt Taylor spoke about her recent employment as a Civilian Welfare Officer, posted to both ITC A FAMILY AFFAIR... Ian Dawes from Sale is an enthusiastic member of the ACF. Having served as a cadet himself, he is now an Under Officer commanding the Sale Detachment of GMACF. His enthusiasm plainly passes on to others – he is pictured here with two of his children, Mark and Lauren. Mark is a Cdt CSgt who spends his weekdays studying National Diploma Art at Stockport College. He plans to use this qualification to move on to Catterick and 16 Air Assault Brigade, home to the Parachute Regiment. The presentation evening was a huge success and attended by the cadets and staff from Bury ACF, parents and family members, Bill and Marie Murray, directors of SOTS and The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers Regimental Recruiting Team. study Cinematography and Animation.
