Upton Squadron celebrate success<br />
<strong>The</strong> Mayor and Mayoress and Flt Lt Jim Laird with the Air <strong>Cadets</strong> with their trophies<br />
<strong>The</strong> Air <strong>Cadets</strong> 2184 Upton Squadron<br />
continues to go from strength to strength<br />
and to celebrate their success they held a<br />
Presentation Dinner Evening at Prenton Golf<br />
Club. <strong>The</strong> guests of honour were the Mayor<br />
and Mayoress of Wirral, Councillor Alan and<br />
Catherine Jennings who were welcomed by<br />
Flt Lt Jim Laird, the Sqn Comd.<br />
After the meal, the parents saw the<br />
Mayor make the awards which went to Cdt<br />
Mitchell (Best Female Cadet); Cdt Sindall<br />
(Best Attendance and Sports); Cdt Rutter<br />
(Most Improved Cadet); Cdt Cook (Best Male<br />
Cadet); Cdt Jackson (Commander’s Shield and<br />
Sponsorship Trophy plus Best Overall Cadet<br />
for 2010); Cdt Hughes (Best New Recruit) and<br />
Sgt Pybis (Best Turned Out, Best Shot plus Best<br />
Cadet Leader).<br />
To conclude the presentations the Mayor<br />
presented a Second Bar to Instructor WO<br />
Haskyne to add to his Cadet Force Medal<br />
which denotes 20 years of outstanding<br />
and dedicated service to the Air <strong>Cadets</strong>.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Mayor, as an ex-Military <strong>Volunteer</strong>,<br />
appreciated all the continuous hard work<br />
put in by the Officers, Instructors and all<br />
the <strong>Cadets</strong>, in making the Unit one of the<br />
most successful not only on the Wirral but<br />
also on Merseyside. He also praised the<br />
supporting Committee led by Sheila Laird,<br />
plus the brilliant fund raising that they do for<br />
charities, especially the Royal British Legion<br />
Poppy Appeal.<br />

Poppy Appeal<br />
CADETS from Oldham and<br />
Saddleworth collected a<br />
record £10,970 for the Greater<br />
Manchester Royal British Legion<br />
National Poppy Appeal.<br />
Cadet Force units from<br />
across Greater Manchester met<br />
at Smokies Hotel, Bardsley,<br />
Oldham, to take part in the<br />
Annual Award Ceremony.<br />
<strong>Cadets</strong> from 2200 (Oldham)<br />
Squadron and 2200DF<br />
(Saddleworth) Detached Flight<br />
took part in collections at Tesco<br />
Supermarkets at Greenfield and<br />
Chadderton, over a three<br />
week period.<br />
Cadet Cpl Ashley Millward<br />
of Oldham Squadron, who<br />
collected £3,850 himself ,<br />
won the Best ATC individual<br />
Award.<br />
<strong>The</strong> presentation evening<br />
was led by Col Warren<br />
Smith, Lord Lieutenant of<br />
Greater Manchester, who<br />
presented the awards. Also at<br />
the presentation was the Lord<br />
Mayor of Manchester along with<br />
the Mayors of Salford, Tameside,<br />
Air <strong>Cadets</strong> from Oldham and Saddleworth at the Award Ceremony<br />
Trafford, Bolton, Bury, Wigan,<br />
Stockport and the hosts, Oldham.<br />
This is the first time that<br />
either of the two ATC units has<br />
been in the Top Three in Greater<br />
Manchester.<br />
2200 (Oldham) Squadron,<br />
based at Wellyhole Street, Lees,<br />
also won the ‘Most Improved’<br />
Squadron Award and 2200DF<br />
(Saddleworth) Detached Flight<br />
won the ‘Best New Unit’ award.<br />
