Cadets benefit from Altcar weekend
Cadets from Sector 3 of East
Cheshire & South Manchester
Wing of the ATC visited North
Region’s Activity centre at Altcar
Training Camp, Merseyside to take
part in a multi-activity camp.
The Activity Centre is one of
two high class facilities in North
Region. The Centre allows staff to
deliver both aerospace activities
and with its excellent location
on a large Army Training Camp,
it means the cadets can also take
part in shooting and fieldcraft
activities.
A busy timetable was planned
for the 24 cadets rotating around a
programme of shooting, leadership
exercises, fieldcraft and using the
facilities in the Aerospace Centre.
Cdt Sgt Jessica Wright of 162
(Stockport) Squadron said: “I
really enjoyed the weekend and
although the weather wasn’t the
best the activities were fantastic
and I can’t wait to come back here
again.”
Many cadets had a rare chance
to use the Dismounted Close
Combat Trainer (DCCT) Range
for the first time. This electronic
range is the ideal training tool for
cadets looking to improve their
shooting ability on the L98A2
Cadet GP Rifle.
Cdt Cpl Steven Lloyd of 201
(Macclesfield) Squadron said: “I
particularly enjoyed the shooting
part of the camp and I am happy
I had the chance to further my
skills before the Inter Squadron
Competition.”
Number 8 Rifle shooting is
always a popular activity for
all cadets in the ATC and using
the excellent indoor range at
Altcar was good for the cadets.

the Sector managed to achieve

(Buxton) Squadron said: “This
camp allowed cadets from
different Squadrons in the Sector
to meet and bond – they were
certainly acting as a team by the
conclusion of the weekend which
was gratifying to see. The cadets
obviously enjoyed the weekend
greatly as most of them were
asleep by the time bus left!”
The cadets had the opportunity
to use all of the facilities on offer
within the Aerospace Centre.
Cadets were introduced to how Air
Traffic Control works by Cdt Flt Sgt
Tom Stoddard, who is a student on
the current Qualified Aerospace
Instructor Course. They also had
the opportunity to use the state
of the art Flight Simulator with
excellent tuition from Cdt Flt Sgt
Dale McLaughlin who is a Staff
Cadet on 631 Volunteer Gliding
Squadron at RAF Woodvale.
