People & places Fund-Raising for the ABF An excellent fund raising evening took place at the Sergeant’s Mess (Old Red Rose) at Altcar. The 80-strong audience heard a brilliant talk by Col Sir Alan Waterworth on the Liverpool Pals Battalions of the First World War. The event was supported by Merseyside Army Cadets and the Pals Re-enactment Society. The evening raised £1,310 for the ABF The Soldiers Charity. A separate collection raised £140 towards a Liverpool Pals Memorial to be dedicated in 2014 at Liverpool Lime Street Station. Former Whitehaven CADET at CANADIAN REMEMbRANCE SERVICE A former Whitehaven Sea Cadet has laid a wreath at an early Remembrance Day ceremony on Prince Edward Island on Canada’s east coast. In a tradition going back over 90 years, the town of Cornwall remembers the fallen at a ceremony held on the last Sunday in September. The former Royal Marines Cadet, now Kgn Ben Abbott of the 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, was visiting a family friend on PEI who invited him to attend the Service of Remembrance and lay a wreath at the City’s Cenotaph. “I was surprised to receive the invitation but considered it a great honour. I was proud to be able to represent my Regiment, my country and my old Cadet Unit,” said Ben. The tradition of holding the town’s Remembrance Day ceremonies in September goes back to the days when many of the Island’s roads were muddy and often difficult to travel on in November. Long service AWARD Local couple Ron and Cath White from Walney Island have just been presented with the first bar to their Cadet Forces Medal whilst attending Cumbria Army Cadets annual training camp at Barry Buddon, near Dundee. The presentation was made by Col John Davies, Colonel Cadets from 42 Brigade during his visit to the camp. Sgt Maj White and his wife SSgt White joined the army cadets in 1990 at Barrow in Furness where they successfully re-formed the Corps of Drums and trained them to a high standard so that within two years they were able to accept engagements throughout the North West. In 1997, identifying that the youth of Walney Island enjoyed few local facilities, Sgt Maj White raised a new unit of Cumbria ACF there, for which he was awarded the Lord Lieutenants Certificate of Good Service. The couple intend to carry on running the Walney Island unit for many years to come. 14 the volunteer www.nwrfca.org.uk
