News Briefs NYCC Launches Naval Internship NYCC recently launched a remote internship at the Naval Health Clinic situated on the Naval Base in Newport, R.I., and the Naval Branch Health Clinic situated on the Naval Submarine Base in Groton-New London, Connecticut. Naval Branch Health Clinic departments include primary care, pediatric, family medicine, undersea medicine, mental health, physical therapy, optometry and radiology. Orthopedics, podiatry and general surgery are available on a limited schedule. James P. Barassi, DC, will serve as NYCC’s adjunct faculty chiropractor. The Naval Health Clinic-New England treats active-duty military personnel throughout New England. The Newport Naval Base claims bragging rights over the Naval War College (NWC) along with other Tenant Commands and schools. War College patients, generally older, higher-ranking officers who have already seen combat and present chronic conditions or significant injuries, will represent all branches of the Department of Defense, including Homeland Security. New London, an operational naval submarine base, is home port to a number of fast-attack nuclear submarines and hosts a younger demographic of active duty Marines, Army, Army Air Guard, Air Force, and Coast Guard personnel, as well as the Coast Guard Academy Cadets. NYCC students will see a variety of musculoskeletal conditions and acute musculoskeletal injuries, said Wendy Maneri, DC, MS, who is Chief of Staff for both the Seneca Falls and The Naval Submarine Base in Groton-New London, Conn., is one of the two sites of NYCC’s new remote internship opportunity. Rochester Health Centers and heads NYCC’s Chiropractic Clinical Education. The internship, available for students in trimesters seven and above, is tailored to hone expertise in all aspects of clinical evaluation including history taking, physical examination, and any ancillary testing that is associated with clinical decisionmaking. Students will develop a clinical diagnosis and treatment plan, then initiate the plan, and ultimately render appropriate care under supervision until the patient is discharged. NYCC Acupuncture Student Discusses Transition from Military Service to Campus Continued from page 26 one for “The Warrior,” starring Nick Nolte; and the other for “Batman.” He will play a leading role in a horror film, “Holland Rd.,” being shot in Buffalo beginning in September by Paper Ghost Productions and Deftone Studio Productions. John will play a cocky college student who likes to party; and while we can’t reveal the outcome, let’s just say that for his character it’s not a rosy one. John is also developing a business plan for a holistic healthcare facility that will incorporate acupuncture, Oriental medicine, yoga, and other aspects of natural healing. He also teaches martial arts, “mostly to cops and people in dangerous professions.” Asked if he would want his sons to choose a career in the military, he states an emphatic, “Absolutely!” This devoted dad recognizes and appreciates the differing talents of all three of his boys, and is determined to support each of them in their future choices. And who knows? Maybe they’ll become movie stars, too! 29
