Data Bank<br />
The Data Bank operates as an <strong>in</strong>ternational centre of reference for its member countries with<br />
respect to basic nuclear tools, such as computer codes and nuclear data, used for <strong>the</strong> analysis and<br />
prediction of phenomena <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nuclear field. It provides a direct service to its users by acquir<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
develop<strong>in</strong>g, improv<strong>in</strong>g and validat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se tools and mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m available upon request.<br />
Highlights<br />
• Seven workshops and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g courses on <strong>the</strong> most popular computer codes were organised as<br />
part of <strong>the</strong> knowledge management activities of <strong>the</strong> NEA Data Bank.<br />
• The Computer Program Service sent out its 100 000 th package s<strong>in</strong>ce its <strong>in</strong>ception <strong>in</strong> 1964.<br />
• A new version of <strong>the</strong> nuclear data display program, JANIS 3.4, was released onl<strong>in</strong>e and on DVD<br />
toge<strong>the</strong>r with an exhaustive compilation of cross-section curves and tabulated key quantities;<br />
<strong>the</strong> compilation is known as <strong>the</strong> “JANIS Book”.<br />
• The JEFF-3.1.2 General Purpose Library was released onl<strong>in</strong>e and on DVD with special purpose<br />
files and application libraries.<br />
Computer program services<br />
The Data Bank collection conta<strong>in</strong>s more than<br />
2 500 computer programs and 400 <strong>in</strong>tegral experiments<br />
cover<strong>in</strong>g all areas from reactor design, dynamics,<br />
safety and radiation shield<strong>in</strong>g to material behaviour<br />
and nuclear waste applications. Twenty-eight<br />
new versions of computer programs and 32 <strong>in</strong>tegral<br />
experiments were added to <strong>the</strong> collection <strong>in</strong> 2012.<br />
A total of 1 019 computer program packages were<br />
dispatched upon request <strong>in</strong> 2012 to <strong>the</strong> Data Bank<br />
member countries and, through <strong>the</strong> co-operative<br />
agreement between <strong>the</strong> NEA Data Bank and <strong>the</strong><br />
International Atomic <strong>Energy</strong> <strong>Agency</strong> (IAEA), to<br />
authorised non-<strong>OECD</strong> member countries hav<strong>in</strong>g access<br />
to <strong>the</strong>se services. The current co-operative arrangement<br />
between <strong>the</strong> United States Department of <strong>Energy</strong> and<br />
<strong>the</strong> NEA, signed <strong>in</strong> 2006, authorises <strong>the</strong> NEA Data Bank<br />
to issue user licenses and distribute <strong>the</strong> US computer<br />
codes to <strong>the</strong> Data Bank member countries.<br />
On 5 March, <strong>the</strong> Data Bank sent out its<br />
100 000 th package s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> Computer Program<br />
Service started <strong>in</strong> 1964. The package was sent to<br />
<strong>the</strong> Korean Institute of <strong>Nuclear</strong> Safety. It was a<br />
program contributed by <strong>the</strong> US <strong>Energy</strong> Science and<br />
Technology Software Centre.<br />
The number of officially nom<strong>in</strong>ated establishments<br />
us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Computer Program Service <strong>in</strong> NEA<br />
Data Bank member countries is 937, and 77 establishments<br />
<strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r countries.<br />

Knowledge transfer and preservation of<br />
<strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion from <strong>in</strong>tegral experiments<br />
As an important complement to <strong>the</strong> Computer<br />
Program Service, <strong>the</strong> Data Bank organises workshops<br />
and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g courses on <strong>the</strong> utilisation of <strong>the</strong> most<br />
popular computer programs. Seven workshops/tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
courses were organised dur<strong>in</strong>g 2012, attended by<br />
more than 100 participants. Subjects covered many<br />
different areas <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g computational radiation<br />
physics, criticality safety and radiation shield<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
radiation transport us<strong>in</strong>g Monte-Carlo codes and<br />
sensitivity/uncerta<strong>in</strong>ty analysis.<br />
Under <strong>the</strong> scientific guidance of <strong>the</strong> NEA <strong>Nuclear</strong><br />
Science Committee, <strong>the</strong> Data Bank verifies, preserves<br />
and dissem<strong>in</strong>ates well-documented <strong>in</strong>tegral<br />
data <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g areas: <strong>in</strong>tegral shield<strong>in</strong>g experiments<br />
(SINBAD), International Fuel Performance<br />
Experiments (IFPE), <strong>the</strong> International Criticality<br />
Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP)<br />
and <strong>the</strong> International Reactor Physics Benchmark<br />
Experiments (IRPhE). More than 1 000 sets were distributed<br />
upon request <strong>in</strong> 2012.<br />
The Data Bank also assists o<strong>the</strong>r parts of <strong>the</strong> NEA,<br />
especially <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area of knowledge preservation. In<br />
co-operation with <strong>the</strong> NEA <strong>Nuclear</strong> Safety Division,<br />
experimental data from several <strong>in</strong>ternational jo<strong>in</strong>t<br />
projects are ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed and distributed.<br />
<strong>Nuclear</strong> data services<br />
Us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Java-based nuclear <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion software<br />
(JANIS), designed by <strong>the</strong> Data Bank to facilitate <strong>the</strong><br />
visualisation, comparison and manipulation of<br />
nuclear data libraries, users can locally or remotely<br />
access a comprehensive choice of evaluated<br />
(e.g. ENDF/B, JEFF, JENDL), experimental (EXFOR) and<br />
bibliographical (CINDA) data sets.<br />
In June 2012, JANIS 3.4 was released onl<strong>in</strong>e and<br />
on DVD, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> most recent evaluated<br />
nuclear data libraries. Us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> latest version of<br />
<strong>the</strong> JANIS software and database, <strong>the</strong> Data Bank also<br />
made available a compilation of cross-section curves<br />
and tabulated key values for neutron-, photon- and<br />
