In<strong>format</strong>ion and Communications<br />

<strong>Nuclear</strong> energy decision mak<strong>in</strong>g and stakeholder participation need to be based<br />

on knowledge and understand<strong>in</strong>g. The NEA seeks to provide member governments and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>terested parties with a large array of <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion result<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Agency</strong>’s activities, <strong>the</strong>reby enhanc<strong>in</strong>g awareness and understand<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> scientific,<br />

technical and economic aspects of <strong>the</strong> nuclear option.<br />

Highlights<br />

• A new publications policy was adopted accord<strong>in</strong>g to which all NEA publications would, as from<br />

January 2013, be made available for free download from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Agency</strong>’s website.<br />

• The <strong>Agency</strong> produced 48 publications <strong>in</strong> 2012, of which 7 were put on sale and 41 were distributed<br />

free of charge. Overall dissem<strong>in</strong>ation and downloads were very strong.<br />

• Eight press releases were issued <strong>in</strong> 2012 on a wide variety of issues, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> 2013 accession<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Russian Federation to <strong>the</strong> NEA and <strong>the</strong> International Workshop on Crisis Communication.<br />

• Web 2.0 network<strong>in</strong>g channels were used extensively throughout <strong>the</strong> year to communicate <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Agency</strong>’s latest news and events.<br />

The NEA is an <strong>in</strong>tergovernmental agency specialised<br />

<strong>in</strong> study<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> scientific, technical and economic<br />

aspects of nuclear energy. It strives to provide highquality,<br />

factual <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion <strong>in</strong> a timely manner to its<br />

member countries as well as to o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>terested parties<br />

wish<strong>in</strong>g to learn about nuclear energy’s multiple<br />

aspects and <strong>the</strong> results of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Agency</strong>’s work.<br />

Public affairs and relations<br />

with <strong>the</strong> media<br />

Relations with <strong>the</strong> media <strong>in</strong> 2012 covered a wide<br />

variety of topics and questions regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> development<br />

of nuclear power. In 2012, media <strong>in</strong>terest<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> NEA’s activities extended to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Agency</strong>’s<br />

publications, such as <strong>Nuclear</strong> <strong>Energy</strong> and Renewables:<br />

System Effects <strong>in</strong> Low-carbon Electricity Systems, as well<br />

as its cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g response to <strong>the</strong> Fukushima Daiichi<br />

nuclear accident. Over <strong>the</strong> course of <strong>the</strong> year, several<br />

dozen <strong>in</strong>terviews were organised with senior<br />

NEA staff, requested by specialised publications<br />

and <strong>in</strong>ternational press agencies. Significant efforts<br />

were also employed to ensure efficient <strong>in</strong>ternal and<br />

external co-ord<strong>in</strong>ation and communication, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with <strong>the</strong> <strong>OECD</strong>, <strong>the</strong> International <strong>Energy</strong> <strong>Agency</strong><br />

(IEA) and <strong>the</strong> International Atomic <strong>Energy</strong> <strong>Agency</strong><br />

(IAEA).<br />

Eight press releases were issued <strong>in</strong> 2012, notify<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> media of, for example, <strong>the</strong> accession of <strong>the</strong><br />

Russian Federation to <strong>the</strong> NEA, which would take<br />

effect on 1 January 2013, of new members <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Mult<strong>in</strong>ational Design Evaluation Programme (MDEP,<br />

see page 45 for fur<strong>the</strong>r details), <strong>the</strong> results of an<br />

International Workshop on Crisis Communication<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g Fukushima and <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs of<br />

<strong>report</strong>s such as Uranium 2011: Resources, Production<br />

and Demand and <strong>Nuclear</strong> <strong>Energy</strong> and Renewables: System<br />

Effects <strong>in</strong> Low-carbon Electricity Systems. These press<br />

releases are available <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> NEA press room at www.<br />

oecd-nea.org/press along with a number of onl<strong>in</strong>e<br />

press kits cover<strong>in</strong>g such topics as <strong>the</strong> Fukushima<br />

Daiichi nuclear power plant accident, <strong>the</strong> decommission<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of nuclear <strong>in</strong>stallations, <strong>the</strong> economics of<br />

nuclear power, and nuclear energy and susta<strong>in</strong>able<br />

development.<br />
