Activities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Regional</strong> Representation <strong>for</strong> <strong>Asia</strong> and <strong>the</strong> Pacific<br />

269. Dr Teruhide Fujita, <strong>OIE</strong> <strong>Regional</strong> Representative <strong>for</strong> <strong>Asia</strong> and <strong>the</strong> Pacific in<strong>for</strong>med that <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>OIE</strong> <strong>Regional</strong> Representation <strong>for</strong> <strong>Asia</strong> and <strong>the</strong> Pacific (<strong>OIE</strong> <strong>Asia</strong>-Pacific) has put priorities <strong>of</strong><br />

regional activities on Animal health improvement, Streng<strong>the</strong>ning Veterinary Services,<br />

Compliance with International Standards <strong>for</strong> animal health, Capacity building <strong>of</strong> Veterinary<br />

Services <strong>for</strong> animal health including Legislation, Diagnosis and Surveillance and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Regional</strong><br />

Alliance, through organizing meetings, Seminars, Hands-on Workshops, Experts visits, among<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

270. He also noted that, in 2009, activities <strong>for</strong> capacity building were per<strong>for</strong>med by organizing <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>OIE</strong> <strong>Regional</strong> Workshop <strong>for</strong> newly assigned <strong>OIE</strong> Delegates, Phuket, Thailand, <strong>Regional</strong><br />

Seminar on Good Governance <strong>of</strong> Veterinary Services, Shanghai, PR China, and Meetings <strong>for</strong><br />

Streng<strong>the</strong>ning In<strong>for</strong>mation Networking including Legislation <strong>for</strong> animal disease control and<br />

prevention, Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan.<br />

271. <strong>Regional</strong> meetings were held <strong>for</strong> regional in<strong>for</strong>mation and communication activities through<br />

<strong>the</strong> 2nd <strong>Regional</strong> Workshop on Communication, Singapore, <strong>for</strong> transboundary animal disease<br />

control through <strong>the</strong> 3rd <strong>Regional</strong> Steering Committee Meeting on GF-TADs in Tokyo, Japan,<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r with Sub-<strong>Regional</strong> Meetings in Kathmandu, Nepal and Nadi, Fiji, as well as <strong>for</strong><br />

Brucellosis through a meeting in Khon Khaen, Thailand.<br />

272. He highlighted that more intensive ef<strong>for</strong>ts have been made <strong>for</strong> HPAI control in <strong>Asia</strong> through<br />

various meetings in Tokyo, Japan and o<strong>the</strong>r countries, and Field surveillance <strong>of</strong> Avian<br />

Influenza in Wild birds as well as domestic animals along <strong>the</strong> migratory flyways; in Hong<br />

Kong, SAR, Vietnam and Mongolia, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> molecular analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> collected<br />

samples and viruses at <strong>the</strong> <strong>OIE</strong> Reference Laboratory.<br />

273. He mentioned that <strong>for</strong> 2010, <strong>OIE</strong> <strong>Asia</strong>-Pacific plans fur<strong>the</strong>r regional activities will include <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>OIE</strong> Delegates Workshop, Focal Points Training Workshops on Wildlife and on Animal<br />

welfare, toge<strong>the</strong>r with many o<strong>the</strong>r regional meetings/workshops planned <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> control <strong>of</strong><br />

HPAI, Brucellosis, FMD, Prion diseases, Blue tongue, Feed safety; toward animal disease<br />

control and so on, <strong>for</strong> streng<strong>the</strong>ning National Veterinary Services and <strong>for</strong> regional alliance.<br />

274. To conclude Dr Fujita remarked that, <strong>OIE</strong> <strong>Asia</strong>-Pacific will continue working closely with its<br />

partners including International Organizations such as FAO, WHO, WTO and <strong>Regional</strong><br />

Organizations such as ASEAN, SAARC, SPC and NACA, toge<strong>the</strong>r with o<strong>the</strong>r stakeholders<br />

including donor governments and agencies.<br />

Summary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>OIE</strong> <strong>Regional</strong> Workshop on Communication; <strong>the</strong> way <strong>for</strong>ward<br />

(Singapore, 26-27 October 2009)<br />

275. Inmidiately after his presentation Dr Fujita made a short comment on <strong>the</strong> 1st <strong>Regional</strong><br />

Seminar on Communication which was organized in Bangkok, Thailand, in October 2008, with<br />

participants <strong>of</strong> <strong>OIE</strong> Members from <strong>the</strong> Region including Veterinary authorities, <strong>the</strong> private<br />

sector, Media, FAO and <strong>OIE</strong>. The <strong>OIE</strong>/AusAID Programme on Streng<strong>the</strong>ning Veterinary<br />

Services (PSVS) Workshop on Animal Health Communications <strong>for</strong> ASEAN countries was held<br />

in Cambodia, March 2009.<br />

276. The <strong>OIE</strong> <strong>Regional</strong> Workshop held in Singapore on 26-27 October 2009, was <strong>the</strong> follow-up <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Bangkok Meeting, with <strong>the</strong> main objectives <strong>of</strong> considering <strong>the</strong> Recommendations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Bangkok Meeting and <strong>the</strong>ir implications <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Region, <strong>of</strong> identifying strengths and weakness<br />

including delivery <strong>of</strong> and policies on communication <strong>for</strong> animal health at a national level.<br />
