ENGINEERING TRANSFER PROGRAM Olympic College has an engineering transfer program in which a student can be prepared to transfer to a local four-year engineering school as a junior in any field of engineering. Program benefits include: Plan of study tailored to the needs of each student. Course work transfers to all local four-year engineering schools. Tuition rate approximately one-third that of the four-year public schools. Small class size—classes usually have enrollment under 30 students. They develop a following in their students who want to continue on with their instructors.” In addition to Japanese language credit and non-credit classes, Olympic College offers courses in French, German, and Spanish. Also in the works is a Language and Culture of the Middle East course developed specifically for the military by a native Arabic speaker, which will be offered this spring quarter at Olympic College’s site at Naval Base Kitsap–Bangor. If demand grows, the college could eventually offer more foreign language classes. The advantages of studying foreign languages are numerous, according to Japanese instructor Kawasaki. “Experiencing something different from someone’s native language and culture is the beginning of a new adventure,” said Kawasaki. “Students have the potential to go out there and contribute to making the world a better place, which is really exciting. I firmly believe that foreign languages have the power to do so.” INSPIRES STUDENTS (cont. from pg. 3) As an Olympic College instructor, Jung has inspired many students about the magic of language. One of Jung’s favorite stories is about one student who, after taking a linguistic anthropology class Jung taught, decided she wanted to study linguistics. The woman spent a year studying in Japan and teaching English. Later, when the student returned from her experience abroad, she emailed Jung thanking her for opening her eyes to the importance of language in culture. For Jung, helping students on this journey is the reason she enjoys teaching at Olympic College. Like many Olympic College faculty, Jung is passionate about teaching and recently organized Café Advising, which creates a comfortable environment for students to engage with instructors in a location where students usually spend their free time. Many faculty have signed up for Café Advising to help students learn about Olympic College programs and answer questions.
