Even with this uncertainty, you can count on Olympic Medical Center’s commitment to provide residents of the North Olympic Peninsula with high-quality medical care as steadfast as ever. As we continue this effort, we must address three factors – an uncertain economy, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (health care reform) and electronic medical record (EMR) requirements. Together, these represent game-changing forces for Olympic Medical and the health care industry as a whole. We’re also reviewing EMR options and working to select the most appropriate and effective system possible. These steps, along with efforts to increase quality and reduce waste using Lean process improvement, will help us work to achieve Medicare Accountable Care Organization status by 2014, which will help us better manage Medicare reimbursements. The generous support we received through the OMC Foundation in 2010 is amazing. We greatly appreciate the work of volunteers and the funds raised through a variety of special events. For more information about just how important your support has been, see pages 8 and 9 for a look back at the Foundation’s astounding success in 2010. Another Successful Year Uniting to Give T he employee-driven United Way Combined Fund Drive led another successful campaign in 2010, raising more than $137,000 for the United Way and internal OMC charities. “Olympic Medical Center has by far the most successful public hospital-based employee campaign in the state of Washington,” says Jody Moss, executive director of the United Way of Clallam County. “We are so thankful for OMC employees and their spirit of giving.” The campaign relies most heavily on direct donations via payroll deduction and donation of vacation hours, and nearly 600 employees contributed in this fashion. The Combined Fund Drive committee also coordinated a basket raffle and a holiday shopping spree. “Despite a tough economy the past few years, our employees continue to give what they can to the United Way and our internal OMC charities,” says Stacie Neff, co-chair of the Combined Fund Drive committee and quality analyst at Olympic Medical. “It is reflective of our culture here. Olympic Medical employees really care for the health and well-being of our community. We don’t just provide medical services; we are friends and neighbors,” adds Bobby Beeman, co-chair of the Combined Fund Drive committee and communication and health promotions coordinator at Olympic Medical. The 2010 Combined Fund Drive committee also included: Sabrina Clark, physical therapy and rehabilitation; Heather Delplain, human resources; Lillian Domning, dietary services; Patti Green, patient relations; Eric Lewis, CEO; Sally Rowland, medical staff services; Sandy Smith, human resources; Sharon Stevenson, physician relations; and Karen Thompson, Olympic Medical Physicians. A Healthy Attitude about Employee Wellness mployee health E and wellness is of utmost importance to Olympic Medical Center and key to its success as a health care provider. In 2010, the organization’s Wellness committee embarked on several activities to increase employee The 2010 Wellness Committee awareness of health and wellness options. “Giving our employees tools to be healthier and stay well is the right thing to do,” says Rhonda Curry, 2010 co-chair of the Wellness committee and assistant administrator. “Healthy and fit employees are also happier and more satisfied.” Activities in 2010 included a “Salad Day” at Olympic Medical Center’s Medical Services Building in Sequim, installation of a bike rack at Olympic Medical Cancer Center, a “Take the Steps” campaign, “Your Shoes are Lonely” employee outreach for the OMC 10K/5K and the First Annual Robert Boardman Memorial Employee Health Fair, named after an active committee member who died unexpectedly while doing what he loved – hiking in the Olympic Mountains. “Bob spent significant time helping craft a health survey for our employees and helping provide direction on our activities,” says Curry. “He was a beacon of healthy living, and it only made sense for us to memorialize Bob in this way.” The 2010 Wellness committee also included: Ken Berkes, physical therapy and rehabilitation; Robert Boardman, diabetes education; Susan Cooper, Olympic Medical Cancer Center; Mike Crawford, Olympic Medical Physicians; Jessica Edwards, nursing; Graciela Harris, nutrition services; Eric Lewis, CEO; Kathy Matriotti, diagnostic imaging; Genny Monahan, Olympic Medical Home Health; Richard Newman, human resources; Mic Sager, finance; co-chair Judy Tordini, cardiac services; and Katelyn Walters, Specialty Clinic Sequim. In an effort to protect patients from the flu, Hal Lyndes, MD, chief of staff, obtains his annual flu vaccination as other medical staff members line up for their turn on Monday, September 13, 2010. Battling the Flu by Choice Olympic Medical Center’s employee influenza (flu) vaccination rate was the highest ever in 2010, with 90.1 percent of employees obtaining their annual flu vaccination. Olympic Medical is working on obtaining 100 percent through the “Choice Program,” a program that mandates all employees who decline a flu vaccination or are unable to obtain one for health reasons must wear a mask during a declared flu season period in patient care areas or in shared employee areas. “We are happy with our flu shot compliance in 2010,” says Richard Newman, chief human resources officer. “Although we’d like to have 100 percent of our employees vaccinated for influenza, our high flu vaccination rate certainly makes us a leader in the state among hospitals. Our high vaccination rate provides a safer environment for our patients and their families.” www.olympicmedical.org 3
