2010 Community Benefit Report
In
2010, the American people continued to see uncertainty in health care
and in the economy, and they witnessed a historical moment with the
passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act – otherwise
known as the health care reform bill. Olympic Medical Center’s administration and
board of commissioners are closely watching health care reform and the economy,
while working diligently to ensure the medical center will be providing safe, high-quality
medical care to the North Olympic Peninsula community for years to come.
Olympic Medical is not immune to the poor economy and is continuing to see
decreased revenue due to inadequate reimbursement by Medicare, Medicaid and other
government payers. Bad debt and charity care also continue to grow. The effects of
these challenges are seen in the financials. Yet, through a variety of measures Olympic
Medical is strategically positioning itself for increased financial viability in the years to
come. The medical center will continue to support area initiatives that provide access
to medical care for members of the community, such as the free clinics and the local
VA Clinic, and will continue to focus on improving revenues and decreasing costs.
