commentary, <strong>the</strong> Sinhala Bodhivaüsa on <strong>the</strong> history of <strong>the</strong> Bodhi<br />

Tree, <strong>the</strong> Elu-Attanagaluvaüsa which is a transl<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>the</strong> Pali<br />

work, <strong>the</strong> Saddharmaalankàra, based on <strong>the</strong> Pali Rasavàhinã, <strong>the</strong><br />

Guttilakàvyaya based on <strong>the</strong> Guttila Jàtaka, <strong>the</strong> Kàvyasekharaya,<br />

based on <strong>the</strong> S<strong>at</strong>tubh<strong>at</strong>ta Jàtaka, <strong>the</strong> Buduguõa-alankàraya, which<br />

narr<strong>at</strong>es <strong>the</strong> dispelling of <strong>the</strong> calamity in Vesaali by <strong>the</strong> Buddha,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Loveda-sangaràva, containing religious instructions for<br />

<strong>the</strong> laity, are <strong>the</strong> standard works among <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

It is a very significant fact th<strong>at</strong> this revival of Buddhism in <strong>the</strong><br />

twentieth century g<strong>at</strong>hered momentum towards <strong>the</strong> middle of th<strong>at</strong><br />

century as a result of <strong>the</strong> Sinhalese <strong>Buddhist</strong> leaders of <strong>the</strong> time<br />

gaining control of <strong>the</strong> reins of government. Ultim<strong>at</strong>ely in 1948 Sri<br />

Lanka regained its independence after a period of British rule of<br />

133 years. The <strong>Buddhist</strong> leaders who worked indef<strong>at</strong>igably for <strong>the</strong><br />

cause of Buddhism were also <strong>the</strong> Sinhalese n<strong>at</strong>ional leaders who<br />

led <strong>the</strong> struggle for liber<strong>at</strong>ion from foreign rule. It was <strong>the</strong>refore to<br />

be expected th<strong>at</strong> when <strong>the</strong>se leaders gained n<strong>at</strong>ional freedom and<br />

took over <strong>the</strong> reins of government from <strong>the</strong> British rulers, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were mindful of <strong>the</strong>ir n<strong>at</strong>ional faith and its culture and <strong>the</strong>refore<br />

took <strong>the</strong> necessary steps to set things right so th<strong>at</strong> Buddhism would<br />

once more receive its rightful place.<br />
