On August 17, the Minister of Energy directed the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) to
negotiate a long-term energy supply contract with OPG for the output from two units at
Thunder Bay GS once they are converted from coal to natural gas. Ontario’s Long-Term
Energy Plan includes the conversion of Thunder Bay to natural gas, with the potential to add
biomass fuel in the future.
The directive requests that the contract be negotiated by
December 31 of this year. “While this is an important milestone
there is still a lot of work to do. All of our repowering projects will
require a power purchase agreement with the OPA, environmental
approvals and approval from OPG’s Board of Directors,” said
Frank Chiarotto, Senior Vice President, Thermal.
Project work is underway, including engineering for station
modifications, environmental permitting, and risk and business
case development. Concurrently, Union Gas is in the process of
finalizing the routing for the natural gas supply line. OPG will
work with the Independent Electricity System Operator, the OPA
and the Ministry of Energy to develop project schedules for the
plant conversion to ensure a reliable electricity supply in
Northwestern Ontario.
directive can also be found at www.powerauthority.on.ca.
Q2 2011 PERFORMANCE
“When OPG performs well, it benefits all of Ontario
because OPG is owned by the people of this province.
The results speak to the affordability of power
generated from our nuclear and hydroelectric assets
as safe, reliable and cost-effective forms of electricity,
which have a moderating effect on Ontario’s electricity prices.”
- Tom Mitchell, OPG President and CEO
During the three-month period ended June 30, 2011, OPG generated
20.7 TWh of electricity and had a net income of $114-million, compared
to 19.7 TWh and a net loss of $29-million for the same period in 2010.
Production increased primarily as a result of greater nuclear generation due to
fewer planned outage days at Pickering, compared to the second quarter of 2010,
when all six units were shutdown for the Pickering Vacuum Building Outage. Higher
water flows relative to the same period in 2010, resulted in higher unregulated
hydroelectric generation. Offsetting these increases was the displacement of
thermal generation due to OPG’s higher hydroelectric and nuclear baseload
generation, and lower primary demand. For the six months ended June 30, 2011,
production decreased largely as a result of lower thermal generation due to higher
OPG baseload generation, and natural gas generators displacing OPG’s thermal units.
Darlington’s capability factor decreased during the second quarter of 2011
compared to the same period in 2010. For the six months ended June 30, 2011, it
increased compared to the same period in 2010. These trends reflect changes in
planned outage days. Higher capability factors at Pickering A and B for the three
and six months ended June 30, 2011 were primarily due to a decrease in planned
outage days. Hydroelectric availability was slightly lower compared to the same
periods in 2010, primarily as a result of an increase in outages, partially offset by
improved equipment performance.
ZERO
INJURIES
SAFETY
Safety Innovation at Atikokan GS
It will take the contribution of all employees to reach our goal of Zero Injuries. Jason
Morden, an Electrical and Control Technician at Atikokan Generating Station, is a recent
example of an employee putting this philosophy into practice.
Jason’s outside industry experience helped him to identify an opportunity to improve
electrical safety at Atikokan. He saw that the 600 Volt motor control centre doors on electrical
cabinets in the station had to be opened to conduct a potential check to verify that their
power was disconnected. With safety top of mind, he brought forward the idea of installing
voltage indicator lights on the cabinet doors that indicate whether the power is turned on
or off, without exposing workers to any potential electrical hazard. In conjunction with a
written procedure to test the functioning of the lights, the voltage indicator lights allow for the
detection of energized circuits.
With the support of the technical team at Atikokan including Brian McLeod, Gary
Sanders and the balance of the Control Maintenance group, the idea was explored and
piloted successfully. Plans are in place to permanently install voltage indicator lights on all
600 Volt circuits at the station.
Thanks to Jason’s innovation and concern for on-the-job safety, the idea has also been shared
across OPG for applicability on a case-by-case basis. “I’m proud of Jason and the fact that
he shared his innovative idea to improve safety performance at the station,” said Station
Manager, Brent Boyko.
Zero injuries. Believe it. Achieve it. It will take the efforts of all of us to get to zero!
DIVERSITY
John Wesley Beaver Awards
On August 12, Head Office hosted the John Wesley Beaver Awards ceremony which
honoured this year’s recipients Amsey Eliza Rose Maracle (Laurentian University, Bachelor
Business Administration) and Kaegan Oakes Walsh (University of Toronto, Master of Architecture).
On hand to present the awards was Tom Mitchell, OPG President and CEO. “We’re very proud
of the role these students play in encouraging Aboriginal youth to stay in school, acquire
a post-secondary education and graduate,” he said.
OPG awards one female and one male student annually who are of Aboriginal descent entering
or attending university, or college to study engineering, biology, environmental studies
and other disciplines relevant to OPG’s business. This award began in 1997 and 25 Aboriginal
students have since received these awards. The award is administered by OPG’s Native Circle,
which provides a network for Native employees to support and mentor each other.
Charity Campaign
Gets Underway
OPG’s annual Charity of Choice Campaign begins September 22.
Supporting charities is a year-round activity at OPG, but the threeweek
campaign is a focused effort to raise awareness and boost
participation.
All employees and pensioners are encouraged to take part and maintain OPG’s strong tradition of
charitable giving. Throughout 2010, $2.2-million was contributed through both pledges and special
event donations – the best year for contributions in the history of the campaign. In an effort to
make campaign administration more efficient, employees and pensioners will now donate through
payroll deduction only. Cheques will no longer be accepted.
Pensioners who already contribute will receive a letter and pledge form in the mail. Pensioners
who would like to begin donating should email charitytrustprogram@opg.com or send a letter
to OPG Charity Trust, 700 University Avenue, H17A8, Toronto, ON, M5G 1X6, indicating the charity
or charities to be supported, the donation amount and the Canada Revenue Agency Charity
Registration number.
Whether you are an active employee or pensioner, contributing to your charity of choice is easy.
More information about the campaign can be obtained at:
Employees: Human Resources > Employee Programs and Events > Community Involvement >
Charity Campaign.
Pensioners: www.opg.com > Employees/Pensioners > Pensioners > Charity Campaign.
Economic hardships and natural disasters make it especially challenging for charitable organizations.
The ongoing need for help is our call to action. If you already give to the campaign – thank you.
If you do not, Make it Happen and participate.
Beware of Social Engineering
“Social engineering” is a criminal practice that relies on human interaction and often
involves tricking people into breaking normal security procedures to gain access
to buildings or computer systems. Social engineers capitalize on the kindness of
others to obtain information, enabling them to access company assets. For
example, you could receive a call from someone posing as technical support to trick
you into divulging a password. Or someone could try to obtain your access card to
physically breach a facility, steal data or assets. Criminals prepare their scam by
gathering information from social networking sites like LinkedIn or Facebook.
Some common lines this type of criminal may use include:
“Did you see this video of you? Check out this link!”
“I forgot my access card at home today and I am late for a meeting!”
“You have not paid for the item you recently won on eBay. Please click here to pay.”
Successful social engineers are confident and maintain control of the conversation.
They act like they belong, and their confidence and body language puts others at
ease. Awareness is the key to avoid being fooled.
What can you do to help?
Use a questioning attitude before sharing information and if you have doubts
about sharing any information, consult with your supervisor.
Become familiar with IT security standards and policies.
Do not share your password with others.
Pierre Tremblay: MAN ON THE MOVE
Recently appointed to the role of Chief Nuclear Operating Officer, OPG’s Pierre
Tremblay is a well-respected and dedicated leader in the Canadian nuclear industry.
Reporting to the Chief Nuclear Officer, Pierre is responsible for overseeing all of OPG’s nuclear operations. His
portfolio includes the Pickering and Darlington facilities, as well as Nuclear Waste Management, Nuclear Security and
Nuclear Supply Chain. Pierre also works closely with various external groups including the American Nuclear Society
and the International Atomic Energy Agency. A Canadian nuclear business veteran, Pierre’s career at OPG has spanned
over 30 years. After earning his Bachelor of Science degree at Queen’s University, Pierre joined OPG in 1977 as a
chemical engineer at the Bruce Nuclear Power Development. He has assumed multiple leadership roles, including
Site Vice President for Pickering B, Director of Operations and Maintenance, and Senior Vice President of Nuclear
Programs and Training.
This past June, Pierre was appointed to the Durham College Board of Governors which, among other responsibilities,
helps the college maintain its vision and meet its goals as an educational institution. “As senior leaders, we are able to
effectively manage large, complex projects,” says Pierre. “The college is growing and there is a lot of change. I hope
to help them through that.” Commenting on Pierre’s extensive experience, Chief Nuclear Operator Wayne Robbins
expressed confidence that, “...under Pierre’s leadership, nuclear operations will continue to make improvements in
performance.”
Atikokan History
Now on Display
The Atikokan Centennial Museum recently unveiled a series of outdoor interpretive signs
showcasing unique historical aspects of the OPG-host community. To support heritage
education, OPG partnered with Friends of the Museum to help produce the signage as a
way to preserve history, including activities like gold mining and winter logging operations,
which played an important role in the town’s development. Researched and designed by
museum staff, the signs use archival photography and offer a look into the past for visitors and
community members alike. Signs have been installed in the Atikokan Historical Park with
more planned for the downtown area this fall.
Pickering
Nuclear
Enters a
New Phase
August 8 marked a new
phase for Pickering Nuclear
as sides A and B officially
became one station. The
newly aligned station is led
by Glenn Jager, Senior Vice
President.
The decision to amalgamate the station was based on the best economic scenario for
the continued operation of the station. It will also provide enhanced opportunities for
employees to share resources and knowledge. “Some departments have already been
amalgamated successfully,” says Jager, “so far, the results have been positive, and we are
seeing the efficiencies planned for.”
The future of Pickering Nuclear is clear – it will operate for another 10 years and remain a
valued contributor to the safe and reliable production of electricity in Ontario. Amalgamation is
an important step in the right direction as plans for the next decade are laid out.
Q2 2011 PERFORMANCE
Equivalent forced outage rates at the thermal stations increased for
the three and six months ended June 30, 2011 compared to the same
periods in 2010, primarily due to an increase in unplanned outage
days at Nanticoke and Lambton. Net income for the three and six
months ended June 30, 2011 increased primarily as a result of higher
earnings from the Nuclear Funds and lower OM&A expenses. The
improved earnings from the Nuclear Funds were largely due to an
increase in the valuation levels of global financial markets compared
to a decline in valuation levels during the second quarter of 2010.
The decrease in OM&A expenses was primarily due to lower nuclear
outage and project costs, and lower expenditures in the Thermal
segment.
There were several noteworthy achievements in support of OPG’s
generation development objectives in the second quarter:
Life-Saving
Rescue on
Lake Huron
OPG’s Steve Robinson is one of four crew members
of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary ‘Mysis’
Search and Rescue Vessel. The crew earned Operational
Merit Medals this past spring for rescuing
missing wind surfer, David Eybergen, off Point Clark
August 25, 2011: The Joint Review Panel overseeing the Darlington
New Nuclear Project Environmental Assessment concluded that the
Project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects,
provided the mitigation measures proposed and commitments
made by OPG during the review, and the Panel’s recommendations
are implemented. The Panel has submitted its report to the federal
Minister of the Environment.
Installation of the various lining layers in the Niagara Tunnel continues
to progress. A short section of the temporary tunnel liner that was
overloaded by loose rock at 6,050 metres is being reinforced. Tunnel
completion is not expected to be delayed.
Negotiations with the Ontario Power Authority regarding
Atikokan’s energy supply agreement for biomass fuel continues.
Detailed engineering and the negotiation of an engineering,
procurement, and construction contract are also proceeding.
Year-to-Date June Results
For detailed results go to: www.opg.com
A Senior Technical Engineer for OPG’s Nuclear Waste Management Division, Robinson and his fellow crew
members had responded to a call last October to look for Eybergen whose mast footing broke, stranding
him in choppy 17-degree Celisus water. The crew eventually spotted the white board – and then Eybergen
– who had been in the water for seven hours and treated him for exhaustion, motion sickness and the onset
of hypothermia. “It was a very long day,” said Eybergen. “I was relieved to see the Mysis turn towards me.”
Robinson and his fellow volunteers participate in weekly training sessions to maintain the level of knowledge
and expertise needed to perform lifesaving water rescues and recoveries. Eybergen, who presented the
Auxiliary with their medals of merit, now volunteers with the Kincardine Mysis Search and Rescue Coast
Guard Auxiliary Team.
