Mary takes the MRT train to work and, during peak hours, when the
train is very crowded she often has problems finding a seat. Sometimes, the
train is so packed that she even has problems getting on it. Every morning,
she tries to wake up early in the hope that she would beat the crowd.
However, she often ends up being disappointed. Most times, she will have to
stand until she reaches her destination. This is despite the fact that Mary is
six months pregnant. It seems that very few people are willing to give up
their seats to pregnant ladies, like Mary, or the elderly. Most commuters will
ignore Mary and some of them will pretend to look away or to sleep to avoid
making eye contact with her.
This evening, Mary struggled as usual first to get on the train and then
to look for a seat. “Would you like to have this seat?” a secondary school boy
