To determine the role and
public use objectives of
natural heritage lands and
protect natural heritage assets
S TRATEGIES
• Develop guidelines to direct acquisition, planning, development/enhancement and public use of
natural heritage sites
• Identify, acquire and protect key natural heritage assets within the rural area and throughout the
remainder of the City
• Review and update the Naturalization Policy and Woodlot Review Study and integrate into
City of Oshawa Official Plan policies

To effectively integrate public
and other open space lands into
the city-wide parks and open
space system
• Establish use agreements and lease or easement agreements to increase public access to and/or
protection of open space lands owned by other public agencies and other land owners

To continue to expand,
improve and integrate the
recreational trail and bikeway
networks
• Review status of Official Plan as it relates to trail development and revise trail development
priorities and establish trail development standards
• Develop and implement an interconnected bike lane and trail system
• Ensure new trails are implemented as part of new development areas and the subdivision
approval process
• Improve the route and enhance the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail
• Enhance existing and establish new east-west trail routes and linkages
• Identify existing, extend and enhance the off-road trails, including elimination of key gaps
in the network
• Support increase bicycle usage by implementing measures to encourage and support bicycle travel
within the City including bike lanes and racks, signage and snow clearance
• Promote the bicycle and trail network and the benefits of bikeway and trail use
• Develop a program for improved maintenance, signage and interconnection of existing and new
trails within Oshawa in conjunction with Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA)
and neighbouring municipalities
