To determine the role and<br />
public use objectives <strong>of</strong><br />
natural heritage lands and<br />
protect natural heritage assets<br />
S TRATEGIES<br />
• Develop guidelines to direct acquisition, planning, development/enhancement and public use <strong>of</strong><br />
natural heritage sites<br />
• Identify, acquire and protect key natural heritage assets within the rural area and throughout the<br />
remainder <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong><br />
• Review and update the Naturalization Policy and Woodlot Review Study and integrate into<br />
<strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oshawa</strong> Official Plan policies<br />

To effectively integrate public<br />
and other open space lands into<br />
the city-wide parks and open<br />
space system<br />
• Establish use agreements and lease or easement agreements to increase public access to and/or<br />
protection <strong>of</strong> open space lands owned by other public agencies and other land owners<br />

To continue to expand,<br />
improve and integrate the<br />
recreational trail and bikeway<br />
networks<br />
• Review status <strong>of</strong> Official Plan as it relates to trail development and revise trail development<br />
priorities and establish trail development standards<br />
• Develop and implement an interconnected bike lane and trail system<br />
• Ensure new trails are implemented as part <strong>of</strong> new development areas and the subdivision<br />
approval process<br />
• Improve the route and enhance the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail<br />
• Enhance existing and establish new east-west trail routes and linkages<br />
• Identify existing, extend and enhance the <strong>of</strong>f-road trails, including elimination <strong>of</strong> key gaps<br />
in the network<br />
• Support increase bicycle usage by implementing measures to encourage and support bicycle travel<br />
within the <strong>City</strong> including bike lanes and racks, signage and snow clearance<br />
• Promote the bicycle and trail network and the benefits <strong>of</strong> bikeway and trail use<br />
• Develop a program for improved maintenance, signage and interconnection <strong>of</strong> existing and new<br />
trails within <strong>Oshawa</strong> in conjunction with Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA)<br />
and neighbouring municipalities<br />
