Email Addresses<br />

• All new students and staff have an e-mail<br />

address and account cre<strong>at</strong>ed when their<br />

<strong>University</strong> Card is issued<br />

• <strong>University</strong> email address:<br />

– first.last@coll-or-dept.ox.ac.uk<br />

– Beware, some long form addresses ending oxford.ac.uk still exist, new<br />

accounts don’t have this form as an option<br />

• Gradu<strong>at</strong>es generally have addresses for<br />

department and college. Normally both go to the<br />

same <strong>Oxford</strong> account but …<br />

• some departments run their own email servers<br />

Reading Email<br />

• Main OUCS mail server is called Herald<br />

• Webmail is the web interface to herald<br />

• Can read e-mail using an e-mail client<br />

– Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Opera,<br />

Eudora - need the specific software installed on your<br />

own computer and need to set it up<br />

Connecting to the network<br />

– OUCS cannot set up a connection to a College or<br />

Department network for you as we do not run the network<br />

inside the college or department<br />

– have anti-virus software installed and kept up to d<strong>at</strong>e<br />

(Sophos is free to all members of the <strong>University</strong>)<br />

– keep your OS upd<strong>at</strong>ed (e.g. Windows Upd<strong>at</strong>e)<br />

• Peer-to-peer file sharing (e.g. Kazza) is<br />

forbidden and may result in disconnection or a<br />

fine<br />

• Skype is ok as long as you set it up as specified<br />

Remote Access<br />

• Dialup service<br />

– Used for telephone (i.e. not broadband or cable)<br />

access to the network<br />

– Only charge is the telephone call<br />

• VPN service<br />

– Use for access to <strong>Oxford</strong>-only resources if your<br />

computer is not directly connected to the <strong>Oxford</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> network. E.g living out and on broadband.<br />

– Useful for OxLIP, OXAM.<br />

– Needed when using OWL, the <strong>Oxford</strong> Wireless LAN<br />

• Never need to use both services together!<br />

• Corrupt/lost files? Take regular backups<br />

• No space for new email? - delete unwanted<br />

messages - w<strong>at</strong>ch for big <strong>at</strong>tachments<br />

• iPod breakdown cover is now available and<br />

includes cover against accidental damage<br />

• For students registering a computer on<br />

breakdown cover for the first time, there is a<br />
