The Smithtown High School
East Leadership class is taking
contributions for engraved bricks
to build a walkway from the
north side of the school to the
new sports field.
The project is being led by
Maggie Engellenner, a senior in
the Leadership class. Maggie
chose this project because she
felt that this was “a chance to
both improve the school and
leave a lasting mark. High
School East connects our community
in so many ways: community
service, athletics, cultural
events, parades, adult education.
This is an opportunity for families,
businesses, current students,
future students, alumni, teachers
and all the members of our community
to leave a permanent
message that they passed this
way. You can buy a brick for your
elementary school-aged child
today and, one day, that
child will look down and
see their brick.”
This walk marks the
path that athletes, cheerleaders,
the band and the
Whisperettes take on the
way to the field. It is the
same route that seniors
take in the commencement
processional. The
class of 2012 will be the
first class to walk “the
walk”.
The project is being undertaken
with the help and support
of the school district including
Leadership class mentor Morgan
Woods and Smithtown East Principal
Edwin Thompson. The
walkway was designed and is
being constructed by RJK Gardens
of St. James.
The fundraiser will go on until
the beginning of March. The
RJK Garden’s rendering of new
Smithtown East Walkway.
project is scheduled to be completed
in time for this year’s graduation.
