HISTORY 

HISTORY 

1951 - 

Helliksen. This was the name of our company until 

 

re-named Helsport AS. 

1986 - Børge Ousland, Agnar Berg and Jan Ertsås 

decided to not only follow in Nansens footsteps from 

 

crossed Greenland with skis and parachutes. This

trip solo and unsupported. 

2012 - Long term product development and close 

cooperation with Børge Ousland result in the launch 

of Patagonia – the ultimate expedition tent. It is the

100 years after Roald Amundsen set his skies towards the South Pole, Stein P. 

Aasheim, Vegard Ulvang, Jan-Gunnar Winther, and Harald Dag Jølle did the same. 

The expedition followed the 1911 route from the ice edge in the Ross Sea to the Pole, 

with the goal of reaching the Pole on day 100 years after Amundsen. The purpose of 

the anniversary expedition was to set light the important aspects of Norwegian polar 

history, and also focus on current environmental and climate challenges.

Helsports tent range consists of three main shapes, tunnel, dome and lavvo. 

The different shapes all have their different advantages and disadvantages. 

That’s why it’s important to choose the right shape to the intended use. 

TUNNEL TENT:

tents developed for the adventure racer to

The temperature standard EN 13537 does not apply to children’s sleeping bags. Children have different 

physiological regulation than adults. The temperature stated is only a reference to the corresponding adult size bag. 

Children should add an extra safety margin, and adults are responsible for keeping children in their group warm. 

For longer trips and expeditions an extra safety margin should always be applied. The user is responsible for testing 

the gear’s temperature limits prior to such trips. 

WHEN TO USE THE SLEEPING BAG IN REAL LIFE? 

It is important to know that the temperature rating is valid for an average person, in an average situation. When you are out 

hiking, no single trip is the same. People react differently to cold, our daily shape varies and the surroundings will change

in an accurate way, the thermal insulation of sleeping bags was measured. Based 

on insulation values for men and women a model was developed to predict expected 

comfort levels for sleeping bags. In 2002 a new European standard (EN 13537) for 

sleeping bag testing was issued and Thelma calibrated their thermal manikin for 

testing according to this new standard. During the actual test, the manikin is placed 

inside a sleeping bag on top of an elevated wooden plate on an insulating mattress. 

The test is performed in a stable temperature atmosphere where also humidity and 

wind conditions are maintained stable, until the manikin’s “skin temperature” has 

stabilized at 34°C ( + /- 0.1).
