Arts at Owens

As Noted
At one time tribute was commonly paid when
one territory was conquered by another as a sign
of respect, submission or allegiance. Now we
consider tribute to be a mark of appreciation,
respect, or admiration.
In their struggle to balance work, family and
academic commitments, Owens students are our
inspiration. They are the reason we exist, and we
pay tribute to their desire to grow as individuals,
their thirst for knowledge and their unquenching
desire to achieve their academic goals. It is
fitting, then, that this year’s Center for Fine &
Performing Arts season is titled “Inspirations: A
Tribute Season.”
During 2008-09, the Center for Fine and
Performing Arts will pay tribute to talented
artists from the fields of comedy, culture, dance,
theatre, music, art and vaudeville that have
inspired others to follow in their footsteps. With
performances honoring the artistic legacies of
the Beatles, Motown Greats, ABBA, the Dance
Theatre of Harlem and Johnny Cash, this will be
a season to remember!
Through the Alumni Legacy Endowed
Scholarships, the Association honors the
accomplishments of all our alumni who have
contributed so much to communities throughout
Northwest Ohio. We are proud to see their
commitment to academic success and community
involvement continue into the next generation.
The Backpack to the Future initiative provides
school supplies to disadvantaged kindergarten
students throughout Northwest Ohio, and we
salute all of you who have made this program
such a success. Finally, Alumni events such
as Whitewater Rafting, Mud Hens Night,
the Phonathon and Shop ’Til You Drop are a
testament to the loyalty and affection alumni
have for Owens Community College.
I pay tribute to all of you who participated in
our community outreach events over the past
year by donating of your time and money,
supported student scholarships, mentored a
student, supported our students and our athletes
by attending campus events, taught a class
and in so many other ways demonstrated your
commitment to the Alumni Association and
Owens. It is my honor to serve as your President.

Inside
The Walter E. Terhune Art
Gallery presented a unique
exhibit this summer. “Area
Sculpture: Inside Out” featured
sculptures in a wide variety of
mediums from more than 25
artists throughout Northwest
Ohio, Michigan and Indiana,
which was funded by the Owens
Community College Foundation.
In addition to the work
displayed in the gallery, for the
first time Owens is hosting the
work of six outdoor sculptors.
Their work is displayed directly
outside the gallery to the
north of the Center for Fine
and Performing Arts. Exterior
sculptors include Mike Barker,
Judith Greavu, John Parker,
Mike Sohikian, Ken Thompson
and Todd Klime. The work
will remain on the Toledo-area
Campus through May 2009. •

At the Annual Meeting in
August, six Directors were
elected. Each Director will
serve three-year terms and
the Officers will serve a oneyear
term. At the September
Alumni Association Board
meeting, the 2008 Officers
were elected.
During the 2008 Spring
Semester at Owens, the student
body elected a new President
of Student Governement. Nick
Huenefeld will also be serving
as a Director on the Alumni
Association Board and will bring
the students' voice and opinions
to the Board.

Mary Ellen Mark will be at Owens

Artist Lecture Thursday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.
Mary Ellen Mark is recognized as one of our
most respected and influential documentary
and portrait photographers. The 20" x 24"
Polaroids displayed in this exhibit were taken
at the Twins Days Festival in Twinsburg,
Ohio, an annual gathering of several
thousand sets of twins.

winner, Bill Miller, is bringing his uniquely
American sound to Owens Community

Sign Stage on Tour presents Dr. Dolittle
in American Sign Language and spoken
English by deaf and hearing performers. Join
Dr. Dolittle as he becomes a famous animal
doctor who speaks the animal language.

Influences: Motown Greats
February 6, 2009 • 8 p.m.
Take a trip back in time to early Motown and
to the music of the artists of the day. Stevie
Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and
Smoky Robinson’s music and stories are
shared by today’s emerging artists.
ABBA-Mania
March 8, 2009 • 7:30 p.m.
A rock musical that takes you back to the
disco era with one of the best pop bands in
history, ABBA. ABBA-Mania features nine
incredible musicians and singers performing
ABBA’s hits.
The Great Kaplan
March 15, 2009 • 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
Illusion, music, juggling and comedy collide
to delight audiences in The Great Kaplan
one-man comedy and variety show.
Dance Theater of Harlem
March 24, 2009 • 7 p.m.
The Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble
features an interactive performance that
includes familiar and beloved repertory as
well as ballets specially created for this show.
The Legend in Black
April 3, 2009 • 8 p.m.
The best Johnny Cash tribute show on the
planet. This multi-media performance on the
history, the sound and the feelings of Johnny
Cash and June Carter Cash is one you don’t
want to miss.

Side-splitting fun and
school supplies for a good cause
The Owens Community College Alumni Association continued
the tradition of action-packed summers this year.
The Association’s Annual Meeting
and Mud Hens Night took place
August 8. More than 270 members
and their families attended and enjoyed the
brats, baseball and fun. The Mud Hens won
nine to three against the Norfolk Tides.
On July 11, 20 participants set off for the
fifth annual Whitewater Rafting Trip on the
New River Gorge National River. There were
lots of splashes and a few members ended
up going for an unexpected swim, but it’s
safe to say, everyone had a great time.
Once again, members pitched in, along with
employees, students and the community,
to help low-income elementary school
children through Backpack to the Future.
The drive kicked off in July and continued
through the end of August. Backpacks,
crayons, markers, glue, colored pencils and
more were collected. As any parent knows,
these supplies can add up fast when it is
time to head back to school.
Thanks to the help of everyone who donated,
countless students in 16 schools received
more than 300 backpacks and 5,400 pieces
of school supplies.

The Owens Community College Foundation and the
new Hilton Garden Inn are joining together for an
Uncommon Evening and an uncommonly good cause
– scholarships.

The new Hilton Garden Inn at Levis Commons is having a
grand opening gala October 24 to benefit the Foundation.
The event kicks off at 6:18, just one of the many twists and
turns that guests can expect.
An Uncommon Evening will include an uncommon dinner, a silent
loud auction and uncommon entertainment in the new, premier
hotel in the Toledo area.
Tickets are $100 each and proceeds will directly benefit students

Alumni ABBA Maniacs
The Alumni Association is hosting an
Alumni Night at ABBA-Mania March 8,
2009. At 6 p.m. join your fellow alumni for
food and drinks in the Center for Fine and
Performing Arts.
Catch the show at 7:30 p.m. and enjoy the
rock musical that will take you back to the
disco era and one of the best pop bands in
History – ABBA. ABBA-Mania features
nine incredible musicians and singers who
perform 21 of ABBA’s hits with costume
changes, choreography, a live band, back-up
singers and a big studio sound.

Danny Snider (Computer
Programming ’82) graduated
in 1985 from The University of
Toledo. He has been working
at Hewlett Packard for 28 years
as an Applications Support
Manager. He is married to Lisa
and has a daughter, Amanda,
and a son, Andrew. He resides
in Cumming, Ga.
90s
The nineties
Nancy Sterling (Landscape
and Turfgrass Management
’94) has been working with
the Tolco Corporation for nine
years and is currently a forklift
operator/ trainer certified. She
enjoys spending time with her
grandchildren, two of whom
were born on the same day just
three years apart.
Allison Lavens (Landscape and
Turfgrass Management ’95) is
the manager for Barks Road,
a landscape architecture firm.
She manages nine estates in the
Annapolis, Md. area.
Nate Wolke (Landscape and
Turfgrass Management ’95)
works at Outdoor Craftsmen,
a landscape design build firm
where he is a project manager
running three, three-man
crews. He currently resides in
the Broomfield, Colo. area.
Jane Murphy (Landscape and
Turfgrass Management ’96)
owns Garden Keeper where she
has multiple responsibilities
including garden coordination,
maintenance, design, small
renovations and much more.

The aughts
Lisa Hummer (Landscape and
Turfgrass Management ’00) has
been at Brandywine Country
Club for the past three years as a
horticulturist and loves it.
Ernestine (Moreno) Olson
(Landscape and Turfgrass
Management ’00) continues to
work at Schedel’s Arboretum
and Gardens as a crew leader.
She has been there since her
internship in the late 1990s.
Ernestine married Frank Olson
April 19, 2002. He retired from
Kraft/Nabisco in March 2008.
Jeremiah Magee (Landscape
and Turfgrass Management ’01)
is the owner of Premium Turf
in Findlay. He resides in
Findlay, Ohio.
Josh Miller (Landscape and
Turfgrass Management ’01) is
the Greenhouse Manager at
the Toledo Botanical Gardens.
His daughter, Mia, was born on
September 25, 2007. He resides
in Milan, Mich.
Shawn Rife (Landscape and
Turfgrass Management ’01)
currently works as a Warehouse
Manager at Spartan Logistics
in Oregon, Ohio. He has been
employed there since October
2000. Shawn has been married
for five years and has two boys,
ages three and four.
