Core Goals
Increase the profile of the injury
issue, causes and solutions
through focused advocacy
efforts.
In order to advance the injury issue as a major
public health issue in Alberta concerted efforts
will have to be taken. ACICR will build
public awareness and political will to address
the injury issue through awareness raising
activities such as media campaigns and
targeted promotions to influence the
development and implementation of healthy
public policy at all levels from local to
international.
Key Strategies
1. Improve Albertans' knowledge about the
injury issue through effective
communication and marketing of the
injury issue.
2. Support provincial and national public
policy advocacy efforts related to the
injury issue.
3. Inform public policy makers about the
causes and solutions to the injury issue.
Key Performance Measures
• Six concentrated advocacy efforts
were undertaken or supported.
• Developed 3 new position
statements which called for legislative
change in the areas of ATVs, baby bath
seats or bath rings and graduated drivers
licensing.
• Researched and wrote a brief
recommending legislation under the
Hazardous Products Act to establish a
prohibition on the advertisement, sale and
importation of bath seats and bath rings
that do no meet the requirements of a
referenced technical standard. The
brief also calls for support for
caregivers in providing adequate
supervision of infants in baths through a
multi-faceted approach.
• Enhanced and disseminated materials
calling for improvements to Alberta's
GDL system.
• Broadened our position statement
regarding legislative improvements to
protect ATV users.
