GOAL 1 Increase the availability and distribution of current high quality data on injury. Core Goals The ACICR, in cooperation with the Health Surveillance Branch of Alberta Health and Wellness, compiles and analyzes injury prevalence and incidence data in the province. Surveillance of the injury issue is important to evaluate trends over time and to guide prevention and intervention efforts. To direct resources towards injury issues, decision makers need consistent, comparable data collected over time. Activities to be undertaken in this goal area will enhance the access to current data on injury in a userfriendly manner. Key Strategies 1. Improve access to and dissemination of current injury data for stakeholders by further developing the processes and structures. 2. Create collaboration partnerships with sector specific injury data holders such as transportation or enforcement agencies, targeting identified priorities. 3. Provide input into and advocate for the development of a provincial and national injury surveillance system. Key Performance Measures • From April 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008 data services completed 137 requests. • Maintained deaths, hospital admissions and emergency department data up to 2003. • 100% of stakeholders contacted indicated they were satisfied or very satisfied with the way their data inquires were handled. • 95% of stakeholders indicated they were satisfied or very satisfied with the information they received. • 89% of the stakeholders contacted indicated they used data or will be using data they obtained from ACICR. • Stakeholders commented that the data was not as current as they would have liked. • A partnership with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has been reestablished. • ACICR created three new summary brochures: reporting on all injuries, injuries to children/youth and injuries to seniors in Alberta. The content and format of the summary brochure have been adapted by three health regions to provide regional specific injury data. ACICR Annual Report 2007 / 2008 9 ‹
Specialized Data Reports Background Injury prevention requires knowledge of the frequency and nature of injury incidents. ACICR supports community/regionally-based decision making in the development, implementation and evaluation of injury prevention programs.
