You would serve as "their" first local Ham contact. You need not serve as their ELMER unless you want to do so. Your main function is to tell them "WHERE TO GO." The Ameco books, Novice & Technician (#78-01 = #27-01 + #28-01) for the same total price, are excellent. Prospective amateurs should be encouraged to purchase these book(s) immediately and start working on the multiple choice questions and answers. Mark the questions that you are having problems with and we will try to help you with those you don't understand. Come early to our meetings and see if you can get some of your more difficult questions answered before the meeet ing. ############################ PRESIDENTIAL QRM ############################ Ask not what Amateur Radio can do for you, ask what you can do for Amateur Radio. In a larger context, President Kennedy thought the same about the country. He meant that America gave so much to its citizens that the citizens should consider giving something back. Thus it is with Amateur Radio. Most derive a great deal of pleasure from our hobby, whether it is OXing, rag chewing with our buddies on 75 meters, or just having a two-meter rig in the car in case of emergency. How can we give something back to the hobby from which we receive so much? A couple of weekends ago I heard KB6NMK, KC60EI, and others with their HTs at Camp Pendleton, helping out with a equestrian event. I thought that here are people giving something back, helping as volunteers in a community activity. What else can we do? There's a long list of activities that can use our help. How about Army, Navy, and Air Force MARS, ARES, RACES, various parades, bike-a-thons, Search and Rescue, Elmering some young person to help them get started in the hobby, assisting some handicapped person in setting up a tower, driving a non-driving person to meetings, baking a few munchies for meetings, the list goes on and on. All of us must battle against the "Let Someone Else 00 It" syndrome. If we all felt that way, nothing would ever get done.
