Associate Professor and Consultant GI and HPB Surgeon, Gastrointestinal Surgical<br />

Oncology, Tata Memorial Hospital, Parel, Mumbai 400 012, INDIA.<br />

RESIDENCY (1994 – 1997)<br />

I did my general surgical residency in Lokmanya Tilak Medical College and Municipal<br />

General Hospital which is recognized as one of the leading medical and post-graduate<br />

training schools in the country. I had the opportunity to do a wide variety of general<br />

surgical work initially under supervision and later (1996 –1997), independently. The<br />

trauma unit of this hospital is situated where expressways and railways converge into<br />

the metropolis of Mumbai (Bombay) with a population of 12 million. It is the busiest and<br />

best-organized trauma center in the country. I worked in this unit as a senior surgical<br />

trauma registrar for 6 months during my residency.<br />

POST MASTER OF SURGERY EXPERIENCE<br />

1. I was working with PROFESSOR DR. V. N. SHRIKHANDE and DR. A. G.<br />

NANDE from August 1997 to October 1998 and from October 2000 to March<br />

2001 in SHRIKHANDE CLINIC and in the DEPARTMENT OF GENERAL<br />

SURGERY, BOMBAY HOSPITAL INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES,<br />

MUMBAI (BOMBAY).<br />

SHRIKHANDE CLINIC, established in 1977, is a well-known referral center for<br />

management of Gastrointestinal problems. It attracts observers and trainees from<br />

all over the country.<br />

BOMBAY HOSPITAL, established in 1949, is the largest multi-speciality private<br />

hospital in <strong>India</strong> with a capacity of 930 beds. It is recognized as a post-graduate<br />

training institution since 1992.<br />

During this period, I was actively assisting in surgeries of the Pancreas<br />

(Puestows, Whipples, pancreatic necrosectomies), gall bladder, common bile<br />

ducts and the small and large bowel. I also assisted in Laparoscopic procedures<br />

such as cholecystectomies, inguinal hernias, fundoplications, and<br />

appendectomies and learnt to perform Diagnostic Upper GI endocopy<br />

independently. I also continued my general surgical work in management of<br />

hernias.<br />

2. I worked with DR. PRAFUL DESAI, former director and chief of surgical<br />

oncology of TATA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, from March 2000 to July 2000 in<br />

Oncosurgery, in BOMBAY HOSPITAL. In this department, I was trained in<br />

breast surgery, lower esophageal surgery and gastrointestinal surgery.<br />

3. From April 1 st 2001 to July 31 st 2001, I was working as clinical fellow of DR. P.<br />

JAGANNATH in Gastrointestinal Oncosurgery, LILAVATI HOSPITAL, Mumbai.<br />

In this department, I was actively assisting Dr. Jagannath in major GI and<br />

hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgeries.<br />

4. Since August 1 st 2001 to July 31 st 2002, I was working as a clinical fellow with<br />

DR. P. JAGANNATH, consultant surgeon, GI service, Department of Surgical<br />

Oncology – TATA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, exclusively in Gastrointestinal and<br />

Hepato-biliary-pancreatic cancer surgery.<br />

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE<br />

1. Internship training in Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary-pancreatic surgery<br />

at the MAYO CLINIC, ROCHESTER, MINNESOTA, USA, in September 1993<br />

under PROFESSOR D. M. NAGORNEY.<br />

2. From November 1998 to February 2000, I was a fellow in the Department of<br />

Visceral and Transplantation Surgery, University of Bern, Inselspital, Bern,<br />

Switzerland. I worked under the supervision of PROFESSOR M. W. BUCHLER<br />

and DR. HELMUT FRIESS. Prior to further pursuing clinical surgery, I wanted to<br />

develop a scientific research background. In this department I worked as a fellow<br />

on various aspects of pancreatic disease such as pancreatic cancer, chronic<br />

pancreatitis and acute pancreatitis. My main research topic involved<br />

tropical chronic pancreatitis. In my 15-month stay there, I learnt various<br />

advanced techniques of molecular biology such as RNA extraction, Northern<br />

Blotting, RT-PCR, Western Blotting, immunohistochemistry and In situ<br />

hybridization. I was also attending the operation theatres and emergency duties.<br />

In addition to various gastrointestinal surgeries, I mainly observed and assisted in<br />

a number of pancreatic surgeries (Whipples pancreatoduodenectomies,<br />

Duodenum preserving pancreatic head resections) for which this department is<br />

world renowned.<br />

3. In August and September 2002, I was a clinical fellow in the Department of<br />

General Surgery, University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany, for 8<br />

weeks. I worked under the supervision of PROFESSOR M. W. BUCHLER and<br />

DR. HELMUT FRIESS. In this period, I was regularly assisting in major Biliary<br />

<strong>Pancreatic</strong> surgeries. Furthermore, I was actively assisting in a variety of<br />

colorectal surgeries.<br />

4. In 2005, I was the Warren Fellow of the IHPBA in the European Pancreas<br />

Center and the Department of Surgery of the University of Heidelberg,<br />

Germany. In this time, I was working on the XIAP gene in pancreas cancer and<br />

gained further experience in complex pancreatic and GI cancer surgery.<br />
