tra<strong>in</strong>set. This type <strong>of</strong> configuration would require two sets <strong>of</strong> tools <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> depot and lead to <strong>in</strong>efficiencies<br />

and <strong>in</strong>creased ma<strong>in</strong>tenance costs.<br />

19.2.2 Siemens<br />

Siemens advised that DB keeps its cost <strong>of</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>tenance confidential. However, an <strong>in</strong>vestigation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> costs <strong>of</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>tenance <strong>of</strong> high speed systems (e.g., TGV, ICE 3) <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g servic<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

clean<strong>in</strong>g, etc. is covered <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> report, Some Stylized Facts about <strong>High</strong> <strong>Speed</strong> <strong>Rail</strong> around<br />

<strong>the</strong> World: an Empirical Approach. The <strong>in</strong>formation presented is based on UIC data. In Spa<strong>in</strong>,<br />

NERTUS gets paid per kilometer. Additional costs to NERTUS are possible depend<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong><br />

reliability <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong>sets.<br />

19.2.3 SNCF<br />

SNCF stated that <strong>the</strong> daily, weekly, and monthly ma<strong>in</strong>tenance represents half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> total<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>tenance costs. SNCF advised that <strong>the</strong> annual cost <strong>of</strong> spares used are <strong>in</strong>clusive <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

ma<strong>in</strong>tenance costs, and that <strong>the</strong>y represent approximately 50 percent to 60 percent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> total<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>tenance cost.<br />

The SNCF roll<strong>in</strong>g stock fleet <strong>in</strong>cludes:<br />

• 467 very high speed tra<strong>in</strong>s with 1,162 miles (1870 km) <strong>of</strong> high speed l<strong>in</strong>es<br />

• 1,081 EMUs<br />

• 981 DMUs<br />

• 1,644 electric locomotives<br />

• 1,342 diesel locomotives<br />

• 1,015 shunt<strong>in</strong>g locomotives<br />

• 6,275 coaches<br />

• 53,000 freight cars.<br />

Ma<strong>in</strong>tenance has $3.1 billion (€2,4 billion) turnover (annual expenditure) with 28 ma<strong>in</strong>tenance<br />

depots, 70 production sites, and 24,000 staff members. SNCF also has a highly qualified<br />

technical center and a test<strong>in</strong>g and commission<strong>in</strong>g center.<br />

The fleet life-cycle cost <strong>in</strong>cludes:<br />

• Specification for <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong>sets<br />

• Tender for <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong>sets<br />

• Development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong>sets<br />

• Test<strong>in</strong>g and commission<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• Fleet <strong>in</strong>troduction<br />
