<strong>OCR</strong> President Nicole with her very
special Porsche Buddy, Cooper
It is an honor to lead a group of fellow
friends and car enthusiasts as President
of our great Orange Coast Region. <strong>OCR</strong>
is one of the largest regions in Southern
California and thanks to a tremendous
group of outstanding volunteers provides
many exciting things to do with one of
our favorite toys, the Porsche.
For those that I have not had the
pleasure of meeting yet here is a little
bit of background on me. I grew up in
Monrovia (just east of Pasadena) and in
college was enchanted by performing
at Disneyland and meeting my husband
and fellow Porsche addict/enthusiast,
Cooper. I have been an active member
of our region since 2001, when Cooper
purchased our first 911, an ’81 SC. At
that time I was just the “girlfriend” but
from day one I felt like a member of the
Porsche family.
My professional background is
in fundraising, which coincidentally
was my first volunteer leadership role
in <strong>OCR</strong>. At the Porsche Parade in San
Diego, I was asked by Jerry Ainsworth
(VP at the time) if I could help with
the silent auction to raise funds for our
charity. Since then I have dabbled in
many different activities with the club
from judging at the concours to serving
as Vice President for the past two years.
Thank you Jerry for inviting me to be a
part of the team.
This car club is really about the
people! I hope you will take the time
<strong>this</strong> year to have a more active role in
<strong>OCR</strong>, whether you come out to your
first event, at breakfast club, volunteer
to assist one of our directors or jump in
head first to take the lead on an activity.
There is something for everyone and
<strong>this</strong> club would not be what it is today
were it not for the wonderful individuals
that make up <strong>OCR</strong>. Any of the board
members listed in the front of the Pando
would enjoy helping a fresh volunteer to
continue <strong>OCR</strong>’s tradition of having fun,
send them an email. Hope to see you in

New Kids on the Block
The <strong>OCR</strong> tower is accommodating some
new arrivals with the addition of the new
Board <strong>Member</strong>s at the moment. These
boisterous new-comers, fresh-faced and
packed with new ideas are elbowing
their way to the head of the buffet line
and taking all of the ice cubes out of the
buckets. Talking with some excitement
about the plans they have to make your
overall Orange Coast Region Porsche
Club experience that much better. I
suppose it’s always <strong>this</strong> way but <strong>this</strong> new
crop of talent gives us encouragement
for a fun, and fast-paced 2010. They just
better leave a little Bourbon at the bottom
of the bottle!
The <strong>In</strong>ternet, Email, and Zingo
The internet and email have brought
many good things to our society. We can
research our ailments before calling the
doctor so that we have fully developed
our own impressions for the medico to
augment. We can keep touch with our
family and business, and we can instantly
exchange photos that we later wish had
never seen pixilated life.
The internet can also do evil with
malice aforethought. Crimes plotted and
transmitted and that scary “terror chatter”
that the news nabobs scare us with on the
nightly shows.
The ironic thing the internet can
do is that is has the capability to make
you look bad and make someone else
mad when both of you, or many of you,
really only wanted to do “good.” As
the mild mannered editor of your local
metropolitan Porsche newsletter, I have
seen <strong>this</strong> happen several times. And,
recently I was involved in just one such
incident. Oh my. Perhaps a too hasty
response with urgent language and
perhaps a too fragile interpretation of
exactly what is meant “by that comment”
and there you go; an internet squabble.
The purpose of <strong>this</strong> didactic diversion
is to remind us all that we are a volunteer
organization and that sometimes things,
well things just happen. Be careful of
your phrasing and on the other end be
aware that people pop-off quickly and
that we all mean pretty well. But MOST
important, don’t carry a grudge, because
that becomes a personal problem and a
grudge is a burden that does no one well!
Speaking of the <strong>In</strong>ternet
Our web site is undergoing a
transformation and soon it will be back
better than ever. <strong>In</strong> the old days Detroit
used to launch each new model year by
saying the new cars were; “longer, lower,
and wider than ever before!” And I have
reliable information that <strong>this</strong> is going to
be the case with the new site. It is already
a place to look to when registering for
Autocross and we have some fun pictures
there of past events. If your thinking of
joining us for something take a look at
the people there and you’ll see that by

What is required of you? Follow the route, find the photo objects,
answer the dumb questions, interpret the symbols,
avoid the lost competitors going the other way.

This will be a sort-of-scenic drive through central Orange County.
The route instructions will offer some challenge (7th grade IQ recommended).
Estimated driving time is 3 hours and the total event should wrap by 1:30 pm
Begin and End at Steelhead Brewery, Irvine (adj. to UCI)
Registration opens @ 8:00AM and the event fee is $10.00 per car.
Driver’s Meeting @ 8:30 am with the First Car Out @ 8:45.

Thinking About Restoring an Older Porsche?
Read This First!

How do you go from fixing miniature
hobby engines to restoring a Porsche
356?
The Cox .049 was marvel of the
1960’s. For me and many other baby
boomers it illuminated the world of the
internal combustion engine. I dissected
several of those miniature motors during
my wonder years. Most of them survived
the ordeal and my model airplane would
take to the air the following weekend.
My “flying” buddy lived down
the street. <strong>In</strong> his garage were two red
jellybean-shaped sports cars that were
decidedly unlike anything else I had
seen. The gold letters across the back
read “PORSCHE”, but at the time
my grade school spelling knowledge
provided no clue as to how to that word
was pronounced.
Fast forward to my teens, and my
first attempt to fix a car was decidedly
unsuccessful. My friend Karl and I
bought a Renault Dauphine from our
high school math teacher for $25. We
were going to make an easy killing
by giving it a tune up and selling it for
$50. After driving the car to Karl’s
home we removed the spark plugs and
distributor, but failed to take note of the
ordering of the spark plug wires. Worse,
the distributor could be installed in two
different directions. We were faced with
32 possible combinations, compounded
by the lack of a timing light. Alas, the
Renault Dauphine never ran again.
We had other high school car
adventures. One day we towed an
Austin “bug-eye” Sprite behind my
friend Darrow’s pickup truck using a
rope. Normally one of us would have
ridden in the trailing car to operate the
brakes, but in <strong>this</strong> case the Sprite had
no brakes. To prevent it from slamming
into the back of the tow truck three of
our friends sat on the tailgate of the truck
with their legs propped against the hood
of the Sprite. The cop who pulled us
over was genuinely upset with us instead
of appreciating the elegant simplicity of
such a plan.
I worked my way through college at
a full service Union 76 station. Beginning
with the basics, I learned; oil changes,
brakes, tune-ups, air conditioning, etc.
Pretty soon I was getting into engine
rebuilds.
Although I could keep my cars
running I couldn’t afford a nice car. So
I would get rid of one car for something
that seemed better. As a college student
a Porsche would have been the coolest
thing to have, but it was simply out of
the question.
My first car had been a 1953 Mercury
with a flathead V-8. My second was a
1962 Volkswagen Beetle. My third was
a 1965 Datsun Fairlady 1500. My fourth
was a 1960 Volkswagen Camper. Then I
had a 1959 MGA. I’d really like to travel
back in time and tell young me NOT to
get rid of any of those cars.
I married my lovely wife Christy
in 1983. We bought our house in San
Clemente. Twin boys followed and I
was fully engaged in family life. But
I still looked back knowing that I had
let everything from a convertible ’66
Mustang to a Studebaker Lark slip
through my fingers. Hmmm, maybe
the Studebaker wasn’t such a loss. But
my regrets ultimately led me into the
Porsche world. <strong>In</strong> 1998 I resolved to find
a Porsche 356, fix it up, and keep it in
honor of all the cars of my past.
I put the word out. I studied the
356 on the <strong>In</strong>ternet. I went to the 356
Club’s Concours at Dana Point. There
were a couple of dead end leads. Then
late in the summer our family mechanic
introduced me to one of his customers
who had just blown the engine in his
356 and was looking to get rid of it. I
inspected the car, negotiated the price,
and called a tow truck.
As we were unloading my 1963
Porsche 356 project Christy came out and
asked me if <strong>this</strong> was my mid-life crisis.
I retorted that it was better than a bimbo.
Christy nodded in agreement, but then
my 10-year-old son Andy blurted out,
“What’s a bimbo?”
If you are thinking about restoring
an old Porsche, please read the next
section very carefully.

My original goal was to buy an old
beater and spend a few months making
it drivable. It doesn’t work like that
because once you start fixing one thing
you feel obliged to fix everything around
it. Nearly three years after my initial
purchase I ended up with a nice car.
Along the way I made some good friends
and learned a lot of secrets about the 356.
And ten years later I’m still learning.
It doesn’t take long to take apart
a Porsche 356. Because it was easy,
disassembling my Porsche 356 was the
most optimistic phase of the project, and
thus the happiest. Then reality hits.
My cherry little gem had accumulated
a little “dirt under the fingernails” after
nearly 40 years. Since the 356 was in
pieces it was a perfect opportunity to
spend several weekends on my back
or contorted in tight spaces. Slowly I
removed gook from obscure nooks and
crannies that were heretofore touched
only by road filth.
Now the extent of the rust began
to reveal itself. I knew there was going
to be rust but <strong>this</strong> car was turning out
to be a major welding project. I found
a guy who specializes in replacing 356
sheet metal. Seven months and several
thousand dollars later it was returned to
me in much better structural condition.
As the project was moving forward
under the supervision and tutelage of
Jack Staggs, a well known 356 expert
in San Clemente, CA, another important
reality revealed itself. Whenever I
followed Jack’s advice everything went
well. Whenever I failed to do so things
quickly, it went south causing me to
redo my work, <strong>this</strong> time following the
righteous path of Jack’s advice. I now
follow Jack’s advice without question.
It is very important to find a trusted
expert who will serve as your guide. Jack
Staggs is among several qualified 356
experts in Southern California. I have
yet to find anyone who would question
Jack’s honesty and expertise.
I was told not to expect a fixed price
estimate from a competent 356 body and

A Clean Wheel is a Healthy Wheel

The mere thought of crouching down on
your knees and tackling the embedded
brake dust on each wheel can deter
even the most passionate car enthusiast.
After all, who really looks inside the
wheels anyway? Well, your wheels
can sometimes be one of the most
valuable components of your vehicle.
Replacing wheels due to lack of
preventative care such as washing can cost
you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.
So what is the culprit here? Brake pads
are composed of asbestos, mono-filament
carbon fiber, metal filings and adhesive.
The adhesive used to mold brake pads
is the problem, not the carbon fiber or
asbestos. Brake pad adhesive will etch
and pit if the dust is allowed to remain
in contact with the heated wheel surface.
Most wheels will average a running
temperature of 190°F on warm summer
days. A running wheel also sets up a small
negative static charge that attracts brake
dust and unfortunately the adhesive used
to create the brake pad. The magnetic
charge and heat is the perfect environment
for collecting and holding <strong>this</strong> menace.

OK.. so now that we know where the
problem comes from, how do we remedy
the situation? Should we rinse with water,
solvent-based wheel cleaners, car wash
soap, dish soap? The answer is a simple
one. Most wheels, whether OEM or after
market, are painted much like the finish
of your car. Would you use your current
wheel cleaner on your paint? If the
answer is no, then you shouldn’t be using
it on the wheels either. Wheels are either
painted with a clear coat or are polished.
Both styles of wheels are easy to care for.

Whenever dealing with car care, you
want to use the least aggressive product
to get complete the job. When it comes
to wheels, purchase non-acidic, nonphosphoric,
low pH, 7-8, wheel wash
designed to break the cohesive bond
between brake pad dust and chrome,
painted, coated alloy, aluminum or steel
wheels. According to Porsche, if the pH
of the cleaner is incorrect, the protective
coating on the wheels will be destroyed.
To be safe, stay with known and accepted
brands of wheel cleaner that provide full
instructions and do not carry exposure
cautions. Some excellent wheel cleaners
are made by a German Manufacturer
called “P21S” for instance.
Choose a wheel cleaner concentrate
that can be used at the strength you need
for your particular wheel condition and
cleaning regimen. Apply the wheel
cleaner to a damp wheel for best results
and brush the wheel with a very soft,
heavily populated, non-metal ferrule
brush comprised of horse hair before
rinsing thoroughly with cool water.
Porsche recommends cleaning the wheels
every two weeks depending on use.
The clear coated wheels are simple to
care for. You clean them routinely, polish
and wax them much like your paint;
Porsche recommends protecting the
wheels with a wax every three months.
Polished aluminum, magnesium, or carbon
fiber wheels need a little more attention.
Polished wheels need an additional
step of cleaning to remove embedded
materials even further. Over time, the
finish becomes a bit dull and tarnished.
Using a safe and gentle metal polish will
gently and effectively bring back the
patina in polished wheels. Always test
a small area prior to applying polishes.
Caring for the wheels should not be
a daunting and strenuous task. As long as
you are diligent in your efforts, use safe
and gentle products, the chore becomes
a pleasure. After all, wheels are like
jewelry for your car.

Circle of Excellence June 2010
Orange Coast Region has historically
been a hotbed of Concours (d’Elegance)
winning cars in Zone 8 and at the annual
Porsche Parade. As with many cycles,
recent years has seen a dearth of new
competitors in the judged events. Great
rivalries between owners occurring over
years and multiple events are very few
compared with other times. Not to worry
however, <strong>OCR</strong> White Glove lives on
and holds on to the pre-eminence it has
developed since 2002. The hallmark event
prior to <strong>OCR</strong> was with Santa Barbara
Region and their luscious Country Club
venue. The location was sadly vacated, I
believe, after discovering donuts, not on a
table with coffee, but embedded in grass.
Years since have witnessed <strong>OCR</strong> moving
to the top of the heap and recognition for
hosting the premier Region Concours
event. Santa Barbara Region has regained
a new and lovely overlook venue for the
past two years. This is an urge to <strong>OCR</strong>
for more and better.
Given the special venue opportunity
afforded by the Dana Point Park for the
second year, White Gloves is taking up
a step toward an even greater attraction
than a conventional Zone 8 competition,
Park and <strong>Party</strong> features and family fun.
Special arrangements are underway to
include a Circle of Excellence exhibit;
a centralized attraction including only
cars you have seen and read about
in Excellence Magazine. Here is an
opportunity to interact with the cars,
their owners and make copious notes to
conceptualize what might park in your
own garage.
The <strong>Christmas</strong> time Excellence <strong>issue</strong>
publishes the opening letter to the Editor
for an announcement of the activity, the
date and the general event. Pete Stout,
editor, is constrained understandably,
from sponsoring the exhibit; however he
is assisting with full support to contact the
authors and Owners of these special P-car
rides. Zachary Mayne, recognizable as
a frequent author, is first out of the gate
facilitating exposure and nurturing interest
among his contacts to present their cars.
Several commitments are in hand already.
Pete is reaching to all the appropriate
authors and reporting his commitment to
the event. Arnie Shusterman is working
with me to assemble <strong>this</strong> special crowd
of enthusiasts. Together, we have a target
list of preferred participants wanted for
the show. Many cars live and drive in
the southern California region. Pete
Stout will attend and likely bring a car
“project” that will be current in June time
frame for his ride down from the Marin
County offices.
This addition to the annual White
Glove will hopefully cause prior records
for participation and attendance to fall. It
is further reason for all <strong>OCR</strong> members to
mark the June 12 date on their calendar
as a commitment to participate in <strong>this</strong>
unique assembly. Exacting plans for
execution are in the making; ideas
from any and all are welcome for us to
consolidate and ultimately present a
crowd pleasing occasion. The idea of
Circle of Excellence is to add to the fine
event it is and not distract or detract
from all the other activities of the day.
The event is created to integrate special
attention to P-car developments, fit the
interests of young and not-so-young
anymore, and provide great memories.
Best advice is to make <strong>this</strong> 2010 White
Glove Concours your best use of June 12
and not miss the fun and features. Also
our own illustrious Mr. Dick DeRose,
assisted by his “better half” Chris is
once again our event chair <strong>this</strong> year.
BTW <strong>this</strong> is the 40th occasion for
the White Glove, which in itself, is a
special accomplishment relative to all
of PCA. Don’t forget to add <strong>this</strong> to your
“must-do” list of events for the year of
2010. We are in Dana Point on the 12th
of June at Lantern Bay County Park.

with or without your Porsche, it is a
beautiful site and a great way to spend

Once again <strong>this</strong> year we will be
in Dana Point. The date is June 12 th ,
almost “smack dab” in the middle of
the year which makes it perfect. The
venue is wonderful, a grass park on a
bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Did you know we have a “wash and
shine” division that you can enter for a
very reasonable fee? It gets you into the
running for a trophy and it also gets you
into the approximately 100+ plus cars
that will be on display. Be sure to be
there.

<strong>OCR</strong> 2009 <strong>Christmas</strong> <strong>Party</strong>

The 2009 <strong>Christmas</strong> <strong>Party</strong> proved once
again to be the party of the year for <strong>OCR</strong>.
Almost 100 <strong>OCR</strong> members traveled to
the beautiful Mesa Verde Country Club
in Costa Mesa on Friday December 4th.
The evening started with wine, cheese
and an exciting silent auction. A few
of the popular items included a Tumi
briefcase donated by Pamela Horton, a
piece of 356 artwork created by <strong>OCR</strong>’s
very own Judy Savic and donated by
C.L. Jarusek, orchestra tickets to the
Musical Mary Poppins at the Ahmanson
donated by Rob and Sharon Greene and
a lovely New Years Eve at home basket
put together by Brian and Carolyn Quadt.
There were many other lovely items
donated by our membership that made
for a fun cocktail hour.
While the waiters brought out the
scrumptious chocolate cake for dessert,

Rice’s Ramblings

It is becoming funny how automotive
styles are evolving all over again.
One thing I heard when I decided to use
930 Turbo flairs on my 911 was why
would anyone want to put those old
fashioned flairs on a new project? It was
said the 930 “fat” flair look was old and
dated….. Really?
Apparently those comments came
from someone who hasn’t looked around
at the new cars all over the place these
days! I am becoming amazed at how
many economy sedans, luxury 4-doors
cruisers and even trucks are using the
rounded flair with wide lip look-just like
the 1976 930 Turbo did way back in
1975. I put those flairs on my 911 to have
enough room for big tires. Now I wonder
what the stylists of today’s econo- cars
are thinking.
The newest super Ferrari is on
the front of a lot of automotive rags
(magazines) and I must say the looks are
(in my opinion) most un-remarkable.
Thankfully I believe Porsches still
look great, although they have their
share of adverse commentary as well.

One <strong>issue</strong> is the “big butt” look on 911s
since the water age. Some logic reveals
that the mandated by D.O.T. and T.U.V.
crash-crush zones like more “mass in
the a__”. Porsche’s light-weight chassis
DOES benefit from larger and higher
crush-able mass back there.
I was rear ended one dark night
back in 1975 by a drunk and the blow
was awful. I saw him coming without
slowing at a red light and thankfully
received only minor injuries. My ’68
911 however suffered a crushed rear end,
pushing the engine into the rear torsion
tube and making a wrinkled mess of the
rear body work. That was all successfully
resolved with a repair and an update. I
shall never forget how flimsy the early
911 stock bumpers and brackets holding
the bumpers to the chassis were! When
I had my 911 repaired I asked how
come the damage was not worse. I was
surprised to hear that the single biggest
collision protection device in a 911 was
the muffler! I was told that a few rearended
911s that had aftermarket mufflers
on them were scrapped as the whole rear
chassis was crumpled.
So today’s big rear ended 911s have
real purpose.
Porsche has cleverly molded many of
these safety features within aerodynamic
aids onto the basic body shapes of ALL
their product line since the 356. <strong>In</strong> spite
of evolving styling changes and those
who think rear engine sports-racing cars
are obsolete we are still learning the
same lesson from the 1960’s; 911’s are
fast everywhere!
Regarding style, I really enjoyed
seeing Javier and Christine’s Strosek ’94
C-2 Carrera in December’s Pando. This
is one well done update!

QUESTION:
My ‘78 Porsche has been modified
with a later twin door speaker system (2
on each door, one mini, one large). But
I don’t have a “booster” on my existing
radio. Can I hook up the door speakers to
the two wires for the single speaker?
YES, I have done <strong>this</strong> but you do
not use the splitter box that the booster
is used with. If you connect the two
speakers together the sound will work. It
may sound a bit strange. I had to adjust
the Treble and Bass a bit to get it to sound
about right.
Turbo troubles with boost limits:
One 930 came by with reported
boost gauge pegged when driving “on
boost.”
The normal terribly inaccurate
VDO small boost gauge was NOT the
problem <strong>this</strong> time. It was discovered that
the waste gate metal tube boost pressure
signal line was plugged up! So there
was no regulation of boost pressure.
Fortunately the driver-owner took it easy
on the throttle. He said he always drove
his Turbo easy! And that may have been
the problem in the first place.
Boosted air pressure cools inside
the waste gate and piping and the normal
atmosphere moisture then condenses and
forms water droplets. These may cause
rust over time. Once the rust starts it never
stops. Eventually in <strong>this</strong> case the pipe
rusted closed. Without boost pressure
pushing open the waste gate valve –and
regulating boost pressure he was driving
a bomb! How near he came to destroying
his engine is a guess? The message here is
to exercise your turbo engine every time
you drive it. You only need to modestly
power the engine up to 5,000 rpm in
2nd gear, -at least once a drive. Moisture
blows out, the waste gate valve and guide
stay clean smooth and free.

paint shop. Over the years many 356’s
suffer damage, abuse, and cheap repairs.
Much of <strong>this</strong> is not fully discovered until
the paint is stripped off and bare metal is
revealed.
<strong>In</strong> my case the major offenders were
massive amounts of Bondo and exterior
rust in the lower fenders and doors.
My body shop knew how to repair the
damaged panels of course, but at a price.
This was followed by primer and a fine
looking coat of Smyrna Green paint.
Now it was time to reassemble the
356. A rule of thumb is everything takes
an hour, even the most trivial part. How
so? First you have to clean and polish
the item. Then you put it in place. Is it
straight? Is it too high or too low? You
agonize inspect and tweak it until it’s
perfect. Presto, it took an hour.
On and off my sons Andy and Bobby
would wander into the garage to help or
just spend time watching Dad. They
helped me clean parts. They tightened
a bolt or two. They learned about
taking care of tools. They got bored and
wandered off then they returned.
Assembly took many months
of evenings and weekends. Lights,
bumpers, windows, trim, rubber and
fuzzy strips. Everything took an hour,
or three, or fifteen. Then it was time to
get the upholstery done, once again at a
Porsche 356 specialty shop.
Remember the blown engine that
came with the car? A 356 motor isn’t
like those VW engines I used to tear
apart and throw back together back in
college. There are hundreds of hidden
tricks in properly rebuilding a 356 motor.
So I’ll never regret having Jack Staggs
rebuild my engine. As a bonus the
formerly docile 60 HP mill was upgraded
to deliver a little more satisfaction in the
horsepower department.
Finally in early 2001 my Porsche
356 hit the street. It was the first time in
my life I had driven a Porsche.
I entered my restored 356 in the
Dana Point Concours and won a trophy.
I’ve won a couple more since then but I
also like to drive the car. After almost 10
years my 356 is no longer pristine.
It doesn’t end there. <strong>In</strong> 2004 I bought
a Cayenne Turbo. I took full advantage
of that amazing piece of Porsche
engineering. Not only did I rack up the
highway miles, but I also logged more
than 200 off-road miles. The Cayenne
also took us through a couple of serious
Sierra Nevada blizzards. But when the
boys left home I had less reason to have
a hauler, so I parted with my “Porsche
truck” last year.
When I bought the Cayenne I joined
PCA Orange County Region. I have
participated in several of the White
Glove Concours. Christy and I drove the
356 on a club tour of the Ronald Reagan
Presidential Library. We also drove in
one of the <strong>OCR</strong> rallies and plan to do
more. I enjoy seeing the my fellow <strong>OCR</strong>
members at our monthly breakfasts.
Andy and Bobby are in college
now. Bobby talks about getting his own
project car, perhaps a 912.
I still haven’t lost my passion for
older cars. Four years ago I bought a ‘74
914 in nice condition. With a little bit of
cleanup I sold it to a guy who exported it
to Germany. It now belongs to a retired
Porsche factory worker.
Now, as if the sanity has left me
once more, I am restoring a 1967 Porsche
912. This time there is far less rust and
the car runs pretty well. The body and
interior need a thorough going over. But
I am confident it will turn out as nice as
the 356. Then I will sell it buy my next
project car, perhaps a 911 or 993.
I will remain true to my 1963 356.
I can’t go back in time and retrieve the
Mercury, VW bus, MG, Mustang and the
others that I lost. But in their honor, I

President Armand Gastello announced
the 2009 recipients of Male and Female
Enthusiast of the year award. This award
goes to a member that has given 110%
to the club, being not only a cornerstone
in many of the club activities but also
someone that you can always count on.
Phyllis Meng was honored as <strong>this</strong> year’s
female enthusiast of the year. As someone
that puts in many hours of behind the
scenes work as the club’s treasurer. Not a
very public job, but a vital role in making
sure the important “have to’s” of the club
are taken care of; like paying the printing
bill for the pando. Before her role as
treasurer Phyllis wore many other hats
including heading up the concours for
some years and helping as needed with
things like pre-running the rally. Phyllis
will be taking a step back <strong>this</strong> year as
her term as expired, we thank her for the
countless hours she and Tom Meng have
both put into the club.
The 2009 Male Enthusiast of the
year was unfortunately not able to make
it to the party. C.L. Jarusek, the caring
guy that he is had just recently adopted
a rescue German Shepard, Chloe. He
was spending the evening taking care
of the new lady in his life. C.L. is one
of those guys that is always there when
you need him, from being the tough guy,
handling security at the 2008 concours
to heading up the picnic and picnic
display competition. C.L. is truly a gem.
C.L. has also served on <strong>OCR</strong>’s board as
a past Charity Director. It was nice to
see C.L. receive his recognition at the
December Breakfast club.
The last award of the evening was
a surprise, I (Nicole Forrest Boggs) was
honored with the President’s Award. Now
I know what some of you are thinking,
oh she received the award because she is
the incoming President. That does make
sense in theory but the award is a special
award that is not given out ever year and
only given under special circumstances.
I was truly surprised and honored to
receive <strong>this</strong> award and am proud to serve
in the multiple capacities in the club.
A little trivia, David Miranda was the
last recipient of <strong>this</strong> award given out by
two past Presidents for his phenomenal
transformation of the goodie store.
To no surprise, the evening ended
with a lot of dancing. We did the
group dances like the YMCA, always
a crowd pleaser. Then there were the
many rounds of disco, thanks to Judy
Bernstein’s requests. We also had a few
dancing with the stars hopefuls waltzing
the evening away with their sweethearts.
The <strong>Christmas</strong> party would not be the
same without our legendary Master of
Ceremonies, Mr. Garey Cooper. Thank
you Garey and thanks to the members for
a great party!
