As the saying goes, “Time flies when you’re having fun!”
The fun is just getting started at in the Orange Coast
Region (OCR). Our club calendar is packed with activities.
Never a dull moment or month. One-third of 2008 is already
gone and we have been busy with tours, tech sessions,
autocrosses, rallys, Krispy Kreme gatherings and the new
member picnic just to mention a few of our activities.
This month is San Diego Region’s Zone 8 Speed Festival
at California Speedway in Fontana scheduled for
April 4 - 6. Check out www.calfestival.org for all the details.
This is an event not to miss. I ran my race car in 2006 and had
a blast. That’s me in the photo with my instructor who looks
like Santa!
OCR’s own HUGE event is quickly approaching on May
30, 31, and June 1, 2008. This year’s 38th Annual White
Gloves Concours will feature, The Cabriolet and the event is
cleverly named, Topless at the Beach. That’s because it takes
place at the Hilton Waterfront Resort in Huntington Beach. It
includes a welcome party on Friday night, the Concours on
Saturday with a breakfast bar and lunch options, and then an
awards dinner dance event in the evening. The OCR Zone
8 Autocross rounds out the weekend on Sunday at El Toro
Fields in Irvine. Make plans now to attend this memorable
event as it will be filled with great prizes, sponsors, music,
food, awards and a surprise on Saturday.
The Goodie Store
It’s Spring so stopping by the Goodie Store is a
must. There are still a few cool weather items
left while supplies last. There are items with the
OCR logo and Porsche logo, and now also with
the PCA logo! There are items for men, women
and children. We have long sleeve t-shirts, fleece
vests, jackets, and a whole lot more. Plus it’s
also the only place to order your name badges.
Your board members, activity chairs and event volunteers
have been very busy and can use all the help you can give.
OCR Ladies Group
Cars 101 at Newport Porsche
by Nicole Boggs
Photos by Gary Barnhill
discussed. Most of the ladies agreed that
calling AAA would be easier and safer
than changing a tire at the roadside. Bill
pointed out that a flat road tire would be
a problem if the car had two occupants
as it is too large to fit in the trunk and
must be transported inside the car.
Bill moved on to occupant safety in the
event of a collision. He explained how
well the chassis of a Porsche is designed;
pointing out the crumple zones and how
strong the steel safety zone is around
the passengers. Next an airbag from a
steering wheel was passed around the
group while Bill explained how the
The first OCR ladies tech session
was a great success with 30 ladies
eager to learn about their cars. The
group congregated upstairs at Newport
Auto Center for a light breakfast and a
Q&A session. Each lady in attendance
introduced herself, the type of car she
was driving and her level of involvement
with the club. For many of the women,
this was their first PCA event.
Bill Schindele, Service Director
of Newport Auto Center, started off
with a list of common Porsche buzz
words covering the main areas of a car.
Ian Ritchie from Porsche Cars North
America (PCNA) was also present to
help answer questions. Working from
outside in, some of the items covered
included the differences between singleand
two-stage paints, what it means to
color sand a car, the basics of engine
mechanicals, what the different colors
of smoke coming from your exhaust
pipe might mean, transmission basics,
and what the instruments inside are
communicating to you.
The ladies focused in right away with
questions about whether to downshift
when slowing or just use the brakes. The
conclusion was that brakes are cheaper
to replace than putting the extra wear on
the transmission.
Tire maintenance and replacement
created another big discussion with Bill
Schindele stressing the importance of
using ‘N’ rated tires on your Porsche.
The ‘N’ rating means that the tire was
developed in conjunction with Porsche,
and actually works with the suspension
on the car for the best possible handling
in road use.
Carolyn Schusterman asked about
battery maintenance. Many of the
ladies in the group relayed that their
Porsches are a second car and that they
had experienced a dead battery at some
point. Bill fielded questions regarding
jump starting procedures, which are
not recommended in most cases. Bill
explained that the Porsche battery
maintainer is the best way to go if your
Porsche is driven less than once or twice
a week. The other way to deal with a
dead battery is to use a trickle charger to
bring it back to life.
After the Q&A session, the group
proceeded down to the service bays for
a closer inspection of a 911. The trunk
contents were first on the list with the
spare tire and wheel changing procedures
car’s computer system sensed a collision
happening and how the seat belt pretensioners
and air bags were fired in just
milliseconds.
The group proceeded outside for
a demonstration of two old airbags
being fired. Airbags are considered an
explosive device and must be detonated
before disposal by the dealership. The
bags were placed under a dumpster to
protect the group from possible flying
debris. Two lucky ladies from the
group got the chance to push the button
and deploy the airbag. It was almost
instantaneous, KABAM! The bag was
deployed with a small cloud of smoke
and dust! The group was surprised and
amazed at the same time. The airbag
was passed around so everyone could
see what was left of the horn pad and
feel the fabric bag.
The ladies left the event feeling
empowered with new knowledge of the
key mechanical aspects of a Porsche and
it encouraged the women drivers to take
a peek at what’s under the engine lid.
After all, it’s not so scary once you know
about the basics.
Greetings from Your Goodie Store Manager
Story By David Miranda
I
’ve been a member of OCR for more
than a few years now and, like the rest
of you, I’ve enjoyed participating in many
of the activities that our Club has to offer,
including our monthly Breakfast Club.
Back in the early days of my membership
I would attend the Breakfast Club and get
drawn to the Goodie Store as I wondered
what new OCR item I could purchase
and then proudly wear. I also wondered
back then how the Goodie Store operated.
Why was there only certain items offered?
How much of a mark-up was there?
At the December 2006 Christmas
Party I was formally announced as the
Goodie Store Manager by our then
President Chris Duva. Since that time,
I’m sometimes asked different questions
from our members about the Goodie
Store, and some of these are the same
questions I had when I was a customer
myself. So it was recently suggested
to me that perhaps I could write a
story describing how the Goodie Store
is operated.
I’ll start by saying that the Goodie
Store is operated as a service to the members
and not as a profit maker. In fact the
so-called “profit” is non existent. So here
are some of the questions that have been
asked.
Q. How much of a markup is there?
A. I purchase items at close to wholesale
prices from my vendor. I then add local
sales tax plus 10% and round up to the
nearest dollar, which almost always puts
the item at less than retail.
Q. Why is there a 10% markup?
A. The 10% markup is a cushion that is
used continuously from item to item or
month to month, meaning that every once
in awhile I might donate a few items to the
CHOC raffle or markdown a remaining
item or two, which then comes out of the
10% cushion.
Q. How can the Goodie Store afford to
donate items to the raffles?
A. Again, by using up whatever profit
cushion I have built in. The Goodie
Store is not always financially able
to donate.
Q. In what other ways is the “profit
cushion” used?
A. Whenever I have my embroiderer
design, a new embroidery, or screen print
design, his set-up charges for the new
design come out of the profit cushion.
In this way I don’t have to include
the set-up charge in the price of the
items themselves. This keeps the selling
price down.
Q. Why do I have large quantities of
some items and not of other items?
A. If I think a new idea might produce
a good selling item then I’ll order 15,
20, 35 or more pieces of that item. But
if I feel a particular item will only be
enjoyed by a select few, then I’ll only
order one or two pieces. Hopefully,
those one or two members who purchase
those exclusive pieces will then enjoy
their purchase even more knowing that
their item is a one-off.
Q. Why does my inventory change so
often?
A. To keep my fellow members happy!
This way not all members are wearing
the same OCR items.
Q. Can a member order just one item in
a particular size or color of something
that I’m either currently low on or no
longer carry?
A. Yes and no. If I’m just out of a
particular size or color but I have plans
to order more for the next Breakfast, then
I might be able to fill their request. But
once I’ve stopped carrying a particular
item, it’s not lucrative for my vendor or
me to fill in a one-piece order.
Q. Have I considered carrying an even
broader array of merchandise in the
future, such as even nicer, high-end
clothing, posters, etc.?
A. Yes, but most likely not. I have to
take into consideration what items I
order and how I’m going to care for
those items while I have them; I mean
handling. This is the case: I have to
carefully load the entire Goodie Store
merchandise into my Porsche at home
(and I don’t have a Cayenne), unload
everything at the restaurant, set up the
Goodie Store prior to the members
arriving, keep track of the transactions,
tear down and re-box the Goodie Store
after Breakfast, re-load my Porsche (my
poor baby), unload back at home, and
then re-inventory everything and do a
financial account. It’s not a glamorous
job! However, I’m not complaining
because if it weren’t for managing the
Goodie Store, I probably wouldn’t have
met half of the wonderful members that
I have.
I hope this somewhat explains how
and why the Goodie Store operates.
Again, the Store is for us (the members),
and not for profit. If I actually owned
this particular little operation myself,
I would have gone broke or closed
down long ago because as I said at
the beginning, the so-called profit is
nonexistent. But I do have fun, not
only in the implementing of ideas into
actual merchandise, but also in meeting
so many great members. I have to tip
my hat off to all the past Goodie Store
Managers that have come before me, for
I now know what they went through. I
also have to thank those that have helped
me from time to time, especially Al
Aldecoa, who has been by my side at
the Breakfast Club consistently month
after month without me asking. And
also to Chris Duva for totally surprising
me with the 2007 President’s Award at
our last Christmas Party. AND I have to
thank you, my fellow members, for all
of your purchases and support.
I hope that you continue to enjoy
shopping at the Goodie Store and what it
has to offer. I have a lot of ideas for 2008
so don’t hesitate to stop by otherwise
you might miss out! Also, once our web
site is revamped this year, the Goodie
Store will hopefully be offering items
for sale online! It’s either that or our
Board of Directors might have me open
an OCR Goodie Store storefront next to
the Porsche Design store in South Coast
Plaza!
Fahren Autobahnen,
Bahn Bahn Autobahn
Story by Garey Cooper
Photos by Garey Cooper and Mark Trewartha
It all began with…It all started at the
Porsche Club of America, Orange
Coast Region’s Christmas Party in
December 2006. There was a silent
auction (no mimes were harmed) and
one of the items was the Autobahn
Adventures tour of Germany 2007....
hmmmm, what driver didn’t ever dream
of driving the Autobahn in a Porsche?
Hey, I thought; let’s take a chance. How
far would you go to drive a car on a
highway? Of course it’s a nice highway
but it’s a highway nonetheless. All
right, it is the AUTOBAHN, famed in
story and legend and it is true, there are
times and areas where there is NO
SPEED LIMIT.
Somewhere across the sea…Fast
forward to September 2007 and we
are on a jet to Germany, that would be
Stuttgart (or Lourdes to the faithful),
home of the flat six and the driving
passion that is Porsche. In Stuttgart you
not only have Porsche but Mercedes
Benz, talk about a town with pedigree.
With some American pride I might call
it the “Detroit of Europe”, but for the
fact that in the tides of business it seems
that Detroit is in thrall to Stuttgart.
Our first stop was at the Kempinski
Hotel Neu-Isenburg in Frankfurt. Here
we were greeted by Mark and Tina
Trewartha of Autobahn Adventures,
who would be our hosts for the trip.
And in the most exciting preamble,
out in the parking lot there was a shiny
row of Porsches. Imagine a kid of 12
walking into a candy shop and being
told, “take one, any one” and, well, you
get the feeling. Escorted by Mark and
Tina we each had to choose our mount
for the next 10 days. Just like Henry
Ford said, “take any color you want so
long as it’s black.” In fact, they were all
black. We selected a Carrera 4 that was,
you guessed it; black!
Our car was outfitted with an
aftermarket Tom-Tom GPS unit. This
turned out to be an excellent choice.
Programmed in English it became
our “Passport tout” to every nook and
cranny of Germany, Switzerland, and
France (oops!) that we visited. I dare say
that it is worth it to buy one even if you
have a unit built into your current car
and put it in your travel case to Europe.
Just download the maps and enjoy the
directions from there on.
Ventura Highway…The Autobahn
system is unique. It was the inspiration
for the US Interstate system and was a
national highway system that in early
conception was meant to mobilize
troops to one frontier or another. Only
the Romans were better road builders;
they got it and so did the Germans in the
first half of the twentieth century. While
gasoline is expensive there, the taxes
go for the infrastructure and sad to say
8
almost any German road is better than
its USA counterpart. Smoother, better
marked, and better engineered. Their
allure to the USA-based driver is the
open areas that have virtually no speed
limits. I mean NO SPEED LIMITS.
We’ll give you a moment to let this sink
in, yup; put the pedal to the metal and
go till she won’t go no more. There is a
distinctive sign that signals it’s time to
let the petroleum byproducts loose and
fly and that’s what people do. You’ll
see station wagons at 150+ kmph with
kids in the back coloring. At the same
time you might think you’re flying
when suddenly in your rear view mirror
a Renault wants by you! My advice is
to move right on over and let them by.
They know the roads and you don’t;
don’t let your “macho” get too loose
here. There are plenty of Americans
who didn’t need their return tickets after
some time on the Autobahn. At high
speeds, really high speeds, things are
different. Be aware and take care is my
best advice; increment up to the speeds
and be respectful of local knowledge. A
fender bender at 250 kmph has a whole
new meaning. By the way I was just
kidding about the Renault, none of them
passed me!
Cologne, not aftershave…Our
first stop after we picked up our cars
was Cologne, not be be confused with
the eau de toilette marketed under the
same name in various flavors. Cologne
is a Cathedral city and is dominated by
one of these structures. It is all soaring
arches and vast interior spaces. In the
evening we went on a Rhine dinner
cruise and watched the river bank roll
by. I never did see the Lorelei however
because I had my own siren close by:
Mrs. Maxine T. Cooper. Our craft was
the “Jan Von Werth” and she was a jolly
old boat indeed. But the next morning
the open road called and away we did
went.
But Wait, There’s More…Each
evening the Trewarthas had scheduled
stops at lovely hotels with great dinners.
Days were mostly on our own exploring
local roads, or in our case, golf courses.
Mrs. Cooper usually travels with her
suitcase which we in the family have
named the “widow maker”. Though she
stands just an eyelash over five feet,
her suitcase is a little taller than she
is. As far as weight is concerned, let’s
The Perfect Storm
Story by Jerry Griffin
Photos by Gary Barnhill
(aka February 24 Driver Clinic)
As I drove to the El Toro fields at 6 am,
I was wondering if we would have too
few people show up to run the school.
It was drizzling lightly, and I took my
Highlander to hold students’ stuff and
keep it dry, and move people around
or keep them dry if needed, assuming
enough showed up to make it worthwhile.
Many other instructors did the same and
brought their big ones. We did have 60
people signed up, with people filling
any spot vacated within minutes, and 45
instructors committed to help out. Steve
Eguina told us somebody had left a party
tent that would help keep people dry.
When I arrived at 6:30, there were
already 20 people there, mostly our
autocross team that shows up at every
event anyway, but students were already
showing up, and a trailered 924 race car
was in front of me. The students started
arriving at 7 am, and the Van Fleet
team was inspecting with help from the
instructors as needed. We had 45 of the
60 people actually show up, with six
more walk-ons. We had our instructors
organized on one side of the 100’ by
60’ tent, and the students on the other
and were ready to go by 8:45. WHAT
A DAY!
We ended up with 51 students and
45 instructors (some called in sick or
busy, others just showed up). This is
the best ratio we have ever had! San
Diego Region tries for 1 to 1, and we
try for 2 to 1 (with every other region
helping us out). Thanks instructors! The
sun came out with the tent being stolen
by the rental company, so that worked
well (it was their tent, after all). Two
ladies moved the gear in the tent and
were protecting it with their lives when
they were invited to the twin RVs of Joe
Sharp of NARP (“Not A Real Porsche”)
and Jim Wolfhope. Nobody got cold
and left. No cars broke down (Porsches
rarely do). One flat tire is all I am aware
of.
The drizzle was perfect for the
morning exercises, as it lowered the
speed of the cars and made it easier to
fling your baby around the exercises to
get the new-to-flinging owners, many
with cars new to them within 6 months,
and two with ‘08s with under 2000
miles! How brave. But they knew what
they bought them for, and you can’t do
it on the street without ending up in jail.
Some were even disappointed when we
told them, “this is NOT a racing school.”
Two had already purchased helmets and
they had not even done an event before.
How did they know how much fun they
were going to have?
I got so many favorable comments
on the exercises, I couldn’t believe it.
And a few comments for improvement
that we will incorporate in the next
school (hey, they were good criticisms,
and we aren’t perfect). We had a new
idea: a figure-8 skid pad that worked
better for many (but not all) than the
circle pad. And we still haven’t figured
out the best way to do this. Wwe may try
a smaller, less coned 8, maybe a small
first-gear 8 with two cones, maybe just
return to a circle. Who knows? These
new cars with PASM and PSM (Please
12
Autocross Corner
Save Me) and whatever else are difficult
to get to skid. How many of you know
what your car will do in a skid? Our
students do.
The accident avoidance, usually
the least favorite (but most appreciated
by a few that let us know later that they
actually avoided a hazard rather than
hit the brakes and get rear-ended by the
guy who no way can stop as fast as your
Porsche). Yes, NOBODY can stop as
fast as we can (maybe some equal to,
but very rarely better). How many of
you know you can stop 30% faster than
that SUV behind you? You better keep
extra distance from the car in front, not
for you, but for the idiot behind you
that will rear-end you. We improved the
accident avoidance/threshold braking
with a throttle-steering optional exit that
everybody (I think) loved. I know the
students I was with did, and many others
that commented to us.
The increasing/decreasing radius
turns (“D” pad) helped students to see
how their cars responded to these turns
and how the cars can be helped with
weight transfer to the front wheels by
lifting the accelerator or touching the
brakes. This one really starts people
figuring out their car’s handling patterns,
making them knowledgeable about types
of turns and the importance of looking
ahead to plan the best way to take a turn.
The slalom event is always a
favorite, because most of us have figured
out where the left side of the car is. But
unless you autocross, most never figure
out the right side. This is the place to
figure out where your car is relative to
the cones, get the feeling of your car’s
response time to your steering inputs
(they all have a delay, some better than
others- part of momentum and suspension
systems needing time to take a set
before the car turns). This is a concept
few people even realize, but is VERY
important to performance driving. You
also get some weight transfer practice
and throttle control practice. No wonder
everybody loves this one.
David Palmquist put all the above
elements into a mini-autocross with a
40 mph maximum (we thought he came
really close). The instructors had the
pleasure of seeing the students “get it.”
This is what instructors love the most
about teaching in the schools (we don’t
really care about the $60 credit much,
but it is nice). We had a least 40 of the
students with not one prior event. The
ages ranged from 16 to 75. The cars
ranged from a beautiful 356 coupe to
a couple new turbos, with a 914, 924,
and 928. The field looked like an Easter
egg hunt with all the beautiful Porsches
saying, “Thanks for taking me to this
event- see how much fun I am!” This
is OC, so almost all the cars were late
models with all the gimmicks. Alison,
a 16-year-old, was there with her dad,
Jim, who was there to share the fun with
his dad (Alison’s grandfather) Rick Van
Arsdale. Rick furnished the beautiful
silver 356 older than his son, and over
three times as old as his granddaughter.
She told her granddad she liked it better
2007 McClelland Award
Recipients
For the benefit of our newer members
who did not have the privilege of
knowing the McClellands, let me give
you some background of the honor of this
recognition.
The McClelland Award was created
in 2005 to honor the long service and
dedication of George and Jean McClelland
to the Orange Coast Region and PCA. The
perpetual trophy may be awarded by the
Board to individual members who provide
significant service to our club over an
extended period of time. The McClellands
were 44-year members of PCA and
George was instrumental in the start up of
the Orange Coast Region. Over the years
they have held every position on the board
several times and participated by always
volunteering. They did rallies, autocrosses,
time trials, and wrote scavenger hunts and
quizzes. George was also the General
Chairman of the 11th Porsche Parade held
in Costa Mesa in 1969. They were fierce
competitors especially in Concours, where
their cars usually took home the top trophy.
He was Pandemonium Editor for 10 years
and they provided the famous Tour a la
Grape wine tour for 25 years.
Those of us who knew these fine folks
know of the dedication they willingly
wanted to give to the club. This consistent
service level may never be achieved or
matched again, but we strive to have
members who give much of their interest
and energy to make the OC Region the
outstanding club it is.
This year the board members chose
Larry and Gloria Moore as the 2007
recipients. The plaque was presented
to them at our breakfast club meeting in
January. It was a total surprise to both
of them. Gloria offered gracious words
in accepting for them both saying it was
just saying yes when the call was out for
volunteers Larry and Gloria joined the
Orange Coast Region in late 1997. When
Larry was looking for a sports car, Gloria
remembered friends who had Porsches
and drove them without continually
breaking down! A family friend said her
Story By Judy Lech, Historian with
background from Larry & Gloria Moore
son Randy Shaw bought and sold Porsches
and suggested Larry speak to him about
the car he would like him to find. After
returning from an overseas trip, there was a
lovely red, 1988 Carrera Targa in excellent
condition waiting for their approval. This
car soon joined the Moore family as Circa
88. Thus, “ Now have a sports car…need
a car club.”
After a few dozen autocrosses, Larry
decided he really wanted to race on the big
tracks, so he told Randy he was looking
for an older 911 that he could modify
for the track. In late 1999, after again
returning from a European trip, Randy
had found a 1979 911 SC that fit the bill.
Most of Larry’s driving was with the
Porsche Owners Club (POC). He drove
on tracks all around Southern California,
Laguna Seca which he says is “driving in
paradise.” It was with this car that Larry
openly showed his support of our CHOC
Charity, to help support the cystic fibrosis
kids. During our annual picnic, where
he had the car displayed, he had the kids
make their handprints on colored film that
would have their names on them and then
displayed on his track car. The kids were
really honored to do this. They also got to
sit in his racecar and had a Polaroid picture
taken as a souvenir.
In late 2000 a more comfortable car was
needed, the red Carrera was sold and their
present car, a black 993 with Tiptronic was
purchased at Newport Auto Center.
After joining OCR in late 1997, Larry
quickly got involved when the current
Membership Chairman had to resign midyear
of 1999. New friends Pete and Judy
Lech, convinced Larry that he could do the
job and that began the active involvement
of the Moores.
In 2000 Gloria was volunteered to take
over the Pandemonium magazine when
the current editor resigned. She held this
post for five-and-a-half years, and helped
Margaret Knight , Gloria and Larry Moore, Judy and Pete Lech, and Chris Duva
at the January Breakfast club presentation of the McClelland Award for 2007.
the magazine evolve into the publication
we see today.
In 2002 Larry moved to Secretary of the
Club and, in 2004, became President. He
has written and organized tours and rallies
for the club since joining…everything from
TSD (time speed distance) competition
rallies to photo and poker rallies, to simple
fun day trips. In 2007 he was asked to
write and organize the Gimmick Rally for
the PCA Porsche Parade in San Diego.
More than 300 toured the San Diego
County route he produced, and everyone
agreed that it was fun and, as far as we
know, no one got lost.
During these years Larry and Gloria
have traveled to and participated in a total
of five PCA Porsche Parades: Sacramento
2000, Boise 2002, Hershey 2005, Portland
2006, and San Diego 2007.
In recognition of their contributions, Larry
and Gloria have each been individually
named Enthusiast of the Year twice by the
Orange Coast Region and in January 2008
they were together awarded the club’s
highest recognition, The McClelland
Award, for long and consistent service to
the organization. 2008 finds the Moores
still involved; Gloria is helping with the
new Pandemonium editor transition and
also with the website remodeling. Larry
is continuing on the Board of Directors as
Member-at Large. They will quickly tell
you, “the cars are great and the people are
even better.”
For those of you who know and have
worked with these two, they are always
willing and able to raise the bar of
excellence for all of us. You will usually
see their smiling faces at any event
where they can be found volunteering
for whatever needs to be done. We
congratulate them for being selected for
this honor.
High atop the Orange Coast Region’s
club tower in metropolitan Orange
County one lonely light blazoned forth.
Arcing through the night sky like a
beacon, it shone out over the freeways
and roads of the vast metroplex…the
Big Orange. Down a lonely corridor a
cry was heard, “Great Ceasar’s ghost,
get me an editor!” It was the publisher of
our newsletter, Gloria Moore. A legend
in the field; when she called, I ran and
that’s how it all began....me a kid from
Paramount now an editor, and of a
large metropolitan newsletter like the
Pandemonium!
Yeah, that’s me...your new editor
and proud to help. I know I’ll have the
assistance of publisher Moore and other
club members, so this daunting job will
be made much easier. My beat is the
Big Orange and our Club. And what a
Editor’s Notes by Garey Cooper
club we have. We are the Zone 8 Large
Region of the Year and on a roll. We
have driving events, tours, rallyes (I like
to use the “e,” it’s sophisticated), and
a Concours that will be quite an event
this year. Our President, Armand, is
supported by a seasoned team and has
great plans to enhance your Southern
California Porsche experience.
For the newsletter I wonder how
many of you know of the long tradition
of the Pando, which is our shorthand
for the name? It goes back nearly to the
founding of our club in 1961. I’ve seen
issues back to the 70’s myself. And the
remarkable thing is that it is the unifying
theme of our shared passion for the cars
and their use. What do you like about it?
What DON’T you like?
Let me know, maybe we can improve
this together. I would say expect to be
called to help with input, articles, photos,
and that famous etc.
By the way, have you been to one
of our events? Shame, shame if you
haven’t yet. Why did you buy that thing
in the first place? The one event I always
recommend is the Concours. This is
fun for the family and doesn’t involve
dust, or noise. Plan on coming to the
Concours on May 31, bring the kids
and the grandparents this year. Wander
among the cars and make friends. You’ll
re-awaken all of those urges that brought
you to the marque in the first place. Plus
in 2008 you will have food, music, and, if
you’re not a member of the Temperance
Union, wine.
Oh, oh, I hear the publisher, gotta
run! If you see me at any event, say hello!
EINE KLIENE TECH MUSIK
Or, Tech info before we start the 2008 season.
By Christian and Kevin Van Fleet
The information is presented here is so that we can have our drivers prepared before they come to see us at Tech Inspection at the
beginning of any of our events. This is important and essential because we will be seeing lots of cars on any given morning. Doing
things right will keep it safe and efficient for all concerned. If you have questions you can email us or don’t hesitate to ask questions
from our crew at any event.
A Day or So Before the Event: Pre-tech your own car and look for any problems. Make sure your tires are properly inflated and you
have enough brakes and tires for a “road trip.” If you wouldn’t drive cross country on those tires, they’re not ready for an Autocross!
Also check your lug nut torque--this information is usually available in your owner’s manual.
The Night Before: Make sure you have a full tank of gas, re-check tire pressure and oil level. Wash the windows inside and out.
Unpack and then re-pack the car. By this we mean take out anything that is not necessary for the next day. It’s better to leave it at
home if you don’t need it. Then re-pack the car with the things you will want for the next day. Don’t forget water, sunscreen, a big
dumb-looking floppy hat and a chair. Bring a cooler if you like, but leave the beer at home. As good as a cold one would be during
or after a hot day at the track, it is absolutely prohibited during the event and probably not a good idea before the long drive home.
Also, make sure you have closed-toed, tie, buckle, or Velcro shoes. Open-toed flip flops, clogs, sandals etc. won’t be allowed. Now
get a good night’s sleep. Tomorrow will be a long and very fun day.
The list below will help you get through the Tech a little easier.
All cars that are participating in the Autocross must go through tech.
ALL CARS MUST BE RACE-READY BEFORE THEY COME TO TECH.
■ All cars must have ALL loose items removed from the car and left in your pit area before you get to tech. (If not, we will ask
you to go back to your pit and unload all loose items and then come back.)
■ If you are going to use race tires, they must be on your car before you get to tech.
■ If you have a helmet, you must bring it to tech so we can check to see if it’s up to date. We require at least Snell 2000 (If you
don’t have a helmet, the club has a few loaners.)
■ Test your brake pedal pressure. (We will press on the pedal, and if it goes all the way to the floor, Houston,
we have a problem.)
■ Check your Seat Belts. (We’ll make sure you have them and they are in good order.) We will check the inertia reels if you
have them on your car as well.
■ If you plan on using a camera mount, it must be on you car before you get to tech.
■ The battery must be securely mounted in the car. We take a hard line on this one. If it moves, you will not race until it’s secure.
■ Make sure the Front and Rear wheel bearings in good condition. Wheel bearings should be tight. Grab the top of the wheels
and try to shake the car. If you hear a metallic click-clack sound, they should be tightened. Note: do this before you come to the
track. If you don’t want to do it yourself, give one of our wonderful advertisers a call to see if they can help.
■ Bring your Tech Form or complete a new blank one while you wait in the Tech Inspection line. (Don’t wait until you get to the
front of the line.)
TECH will close 15 minutes before the Drivers’ meeting starts. (If you come late, you will be subject to a late fee.) Remember that
most of the Tech Team is there to drive as well.
If you have any questions on car classification or safety issues, check out the PCA website for all of the Zone 8 current rules at
www.zone8.pca.org/rules.htm
Thanks and have fun,
Why don’t you make a new year’s
resolution to join your fellow
OCR members one Saturday a month at
the Club’s monthly meeting at Original
Mike’s restaurant in Santa Ana (for
special Porsche selected from those at our
Breakfast Club meeting. We have usually
have more than 100 to chose from in any
special examples. This month’s Porsche is
a recreation of the famous Martini Rally
exact copy, it is faithful to the graphics
AUTOBAHN (continued from page 9)
just say I’ve seen experienced bellmen,
and cab drivers turn and run upon first
sighting our luggage. So my wife’s first
challenge was packing enough to wear
with a golf bag. I am sure some physics
laws were violated along the line but she
did manage to accomplish her packing
mission. And although my right arm is
now longer than my left arm and I can
tie my shoes without bending over, we
managed to drag, haul, and cajole all of
that gear into our Black Carerra from
stop to stop. There were a couple of
problems like when I bought a pack of
gum and had to take it out of the wrapper
to fit it into the car, but most of the time
we were fine.
There’s almost a “Lifeboat” quality
in traveling with a group of people over
several days. You are put together with
others and in the time you are together
bonds and friendships are formed. At
the end of each day we regrouped and
shared stories about our adventures and
our misadventures in equal measure.
Two of our fellow travelers: John Haupt
and Danny Poore from California were
at high speed on the Autobahn when
they literally ran into a wall of water
from a heavy ain. Their car must have
immediately hydroplaned as it went into
long arcs, running from one side of the
highway to the other with trucks, cars,
and marker posts whizzing by, first on
the right and then on the left. Amazingly
John and Danny came to rest on the
side of the road, scared but completely
unharmed, as was the car. This was one
of the better stories of the trip, but it also
illustrates that at 250 kmph, things can
happen very, very quickly.
In Switzerland…Part of the
wonderful itinerary planned by Mark
and Tina was the Alpine region of
Switzerland around Lake Lucerne. To
say this area is beautiful is almost an
injustice, it truly is beyond that. The
lake itself is spectacular enough but the
backdrop over the lakes of those high
mountains comes right out of central
casting for everything you think should
be right about Switzerland. This was one
of the occasions where we had a planned
daytime outing. We were scheduled to go
up the Alpine passes and cross over one
to come back down into Lucerne. Armed
with our Tom-Tom’s, walkie-talkies, and
maps, our brave little group took off and
believe it or not got lost! How with all
of that technology did we manage this
one might ask? It seems that there had
been some recent road construction in
the area and some of the GPS devices
were updated for this and others were
not, none of the maps were. The result
was near hilarity as one by one, the cars
were separated and slowly drifted out
of radio range, like an episode of Lost
(without the commercials). I ended
up with one other car, that of our tour
leader himself: Mark Trewartha, who I
figured had at least an inkling of where
we were headed. So, he and I craftily got
ourselves re-routed and finally, near the
mountain top, met up with the rest of our
party who had beaten us there by about
half an hour!
We carried on over the pass and the
views were breathtaking. It is hard to
describe looking out over the mountain
flank with the road one long ribbon of
asphalt winding down into the valley
with towns and ultimately the city of
Lucerne lying far below. Not a place for
the faint of heart or those who get car
sick easily.
While in Lucern Mrs. Cooper and
I had our other “Tom-Tom incident”.
We were looking for the Lucerne golf
club and had duly programmed the
address into our GPS. It got us right
• Collector
Cars
• Street
Cars
to the smallest road you ever saw and
said: “take the road.” So, take the road
we did which went straight up hill and
grew ever narrower the further we got.
Ultimately we begin to lose confidence
as I realized the only way back down
was to....back down! When we finally
saw people pushing golf carts past us
giving quizzical looks as we drove up
to a tee box, we understood that some
mistakes had been made. I used the tee
box to get the car pointed down the hill
again, shouted fore! and we trundled
back down the hill, past dazed looking
golfers where we realized the entrance
road was only about one-quarter-inch
wider than the golf path and about two
feet past it! In spite of it all we still were
allowed to play there, although I don’t
believe they appreciated my California
yodel on the elevated tees: “yodel-layhe-a,
golf ball on the way!”
And Now Back to Reality…
Ultimately all good things must end
and so our Autobahn Adventure ended
as well. We pointed back to Frankfurt
where we had to return the car; this hurt.
Mark and Tina hosted a great farewell
party where Jay Warren had put together
a very clever video montage of slides
thanking the Trewarthas for a wonderful
time. Would I go again? You bet and in
a heartbeat. If you are a Porsche/Car
enthusiast you will not be disappointed
as my narrative here only touches upon
all of the activities and sights we saw!
AUTOCROSS CORNER (continued from page 13)
than the Subaru WRX she normally
drives (talk about a great new convert).
By the way, the 924 race car was
completed the week before by Joe West,
and he had never raced a day in his life
and just decided to build a race car and
do it. His brother is in NARP (the 914
club mentioned above). This was his
checkout run, and it was a fine car (I
know, I rode with him).
We ended the day by opening the track
to instructors with their cars (or the
students’ cars), and a few sacrificial
instructors worked the track. And it
was hard work because instructors like
pushing their luck and taking out cones
when there are no points attached to
them. Some of us didn’t leave til 5
pm. Thanks to the autocross team, the
instructors, NARP, SCCA (some of our
instructors come from SCCA because
we need them and they like seeing new
students “get it.” We had Dwain Dement
of Vision Motorsports come to instruct,
now that he has retired from Grand Am
and Rolex racing (you should see his
WSIR video clip on visionmotorsports.
com). He wants to help us with new
drivers, and gets that same pleasure we
do with new-to-the-sport drivers. And
most of all, thanks to our new students
that are willing to pay $110 or so to come
and be the new blood we all need to
keep our club going, join our ranks, and
contribute time and money, and share all
the fun with people that truly enjoy our
cars and the people with the cars.
A couple of student comments, “This
was an excellent learning experience,
not at all intimidating. Excellent,
personable instructors.” And, “ I was
pleasantly surprised at the instruction
and friendliness of everyone” (This
club, and PCA in general, has the best,
friendliest and nicest people around
anywhere.) Finally, “Just fun.”
The AutoX team thanks all the students
and instructors for making our club so
great. Without your support this could
not happen. The 40 first-timers left the
track as safer drivers and having a better
understanding of how great their cars
truly are. Some of you will come back to
autocross your cars (remember we offer
free instruction at all of our events).
There is no more fun car to own than a
Porsche. There is no better way to enjoy
a Porsche than to use it the way the
Porsche family designed it to be driven.
See you at El Toro Fields!
