Why buy your next vehicle at Walter’s?
1. Family-Owned Business – Walter’s is a family-owned business
where our goal is to make the customers happy, not shareholders or
a CEO on the other side of the country.
2. 50 Years Of Service – Our organization has been in business for
almost 50 years and is constantly investing back into the business and
into our customers. We plan on being here for the next 50 years!
3. Consolidated Expenses – Between the four stores, we consolidate
our expenses to reduce costs; therefore we can sell our cars for
less.
4. Massive Inventory – No other place in Southern California has
the collection of automobiles that Walter’s does.
5. Doing Business In Riverside Just Costs Less –
The cost of doing business in Riverside just costs less than other
places plain and simple – lower overhead means you pay less.
President’s Message
Story by Armand Gastelo
The view from the track
Remember the first time you became
a Porsche owner? The thrill. The
excitement. I took this photo as I drove
onto the Auto Club (formerly California)
Speedway in Fontana for the very first
time in my Porsche. What a thrill that
was. As our lives get busy with life we
sometimes forget how much fun it is to
own and drive one of the world’s finest
sports cars. We get too busy with work,
chores, schools, family obligations, etc. to
take a “Sunday drive.”
Perhaps, your Porsche is not as new
as it used to be. A new Porsche may not
be possible right now―at least not for a
while. So now is the time to make your
current Porsche new again. Today this
is more important than ever considering
the current economic situation. Our
Pandemonium is filled with advertisers
who provide services and products for
your car. You might prefer a dealer over
an independent shop or the other way
around. Perhaps you choose your service
shop by taking the recommendation from
another member or by the size of their
ad.
As President of the OCR I use
myself as the guinea pig and get my car
serviced at different places making my
own opinion, which I pass along to those
that ask for it. What ever method you
use, remember to look at our advertisers
and sponsors first. Also take advantage
of our technical sessions throughout the
year, which as you can see, is almost
over.
Get in and drive!
Editor’s Notes
by Garey Cooper
Summer Time and the Livin’ ain’t
Easy
In the thermadorean month of August the
tinted and treated windows of the Orange
Coast Region tower reflect the summer
heat back into the foetid masses toiling
so far below. Don’t get me wrong, we do
feel the heat and occasionally there is a
shortage of ice cubes to cool our Lime
Rickys and Singapore Slings. But this
only happens when we are all in one
place at the same time, which is unusual
in that there is so much to do within the
club activities.
Rallyes, Autocrosses, Tours,
Meetings, Technical Sessions are all on
the agenda. What do you want to do with
your Porsche? Whatever it is, we have
it and probably more than once or even
twice per year.
Buddy can you spare a dime?
They say that 2010 is going to be better
than 2009. I don’t know who they are but
I’d like to meet them and discover their
basis for optimism. It would sure make
me feel better about things if I could
figure out just what is good news about a
A hearty breakfast with your Porsche Club friends at
our monthly meeting at Original Mikes. P.S. Animals were
in fact harmed for this photo; where do you think bacon
comes from?
10% rate of unemployment or more. But
I’m no economist and, in spite of studying
some botany, I’m always “barking up the
wrong tree;” maybe I should “branch”
out and “leave” the worrying to others?
Your local lunatic asylum society of
the Porsche Club of America is not doing
too badly all things considered. We have
had a few advertisers drop out and some
membership loss but we seem to have
stabilized at around 1,100 or so members.
And that’s still an appreciable amount of
maniacs driving our type of motor car.
Plus paying their dues.
Dropping the Pilot
In the Edwardian era that leading line was
the caption of a famous political cartoon
of young Kaiser Wilhelm dropping Otto
Von Bismarck from the ship of state. I
don’t know if Wedelin Wideking would
appreciate any connection with Bismarck
other than a more-than-usual Teutonic
name. However he is the current pilot
being dropped from the ship of state
known as Porsche. The usual incorrect
and misleading headlines are streaming
across your sporting and financial papers
but suffice to say Wedelin seems to have
been jettisoned and Porsche seems to be
headed into a new era. It is hard for your
correspondent to believe that after years
of profitability that other car companies
could only dream about, the Porsche
management felt compelled to make
substantial short-term borrowings to
purchase Volkswagen stock; but that is
the story. And now the accumulated debt
lands on the company like a millstone
and the hunter becomes instead the prey.
What does this mean in future? Well,
its way too early to say, and I am as far
removed from those halls of power as
chalk is to cheese. But one can’t imagine
another Porsche LMP prototype with Audi
fielding cars into that class and perhaps
becoming a corporate cousin. However,
you could imagine that the 911 RS and
A Family of True “Car Nuts”
Story from Eric, Becky, Rachel and Amelia Budai
Eric & Becky at the Taylor Ranch in Fallbrook
I guess you can say both Becky and I
have been car nuts ever since we were
kids. Long before we met, in February
1985, we had been exposed to all manner
of go-karts , motorcycles , dune buggies
and boats. My father had raced in
local events in an 1956 Austin Healey.
Becky’s Dad, Hal, owned an early Aston
Martin, then later, a black 1976 912e , and
presently has a well-rounded collection
of various Porsches and other sports cars.
My personnel favorite is the red 1986 911
Turbo.
I have to give Hal all the credit
for my exposure to high performance
cars. Over the years, Hal has been the
best father-in-law anyone could ask for,
always there for good advice, some good
stories, or simply someone to go to a car
show with. Becky and I were married in
August 1989, and we have two beautiful
daughters, Rachel (17) and Amelia (14).
Becky works as a travel agent for the Auto
Club of Southern California in Laguna
Hills. I have my own small business as
an Electrical Contractor serving the South
County area, and I also instruct young
drivers part-time at Teen Road to Safety.
Together we have had the opportunity
and the time to travel, building bonds as a
family. Our travels have included Hawaii,
the Eastern Caribbean, Mexico and most
of the western United States.
Fast forward to late February 2008.
Up until this point I had been performing
my own work on our cars, largely
unassisted. Then I was introduced to
James Buck, owner of Cape Auto in
Laguna Niguel. Well, everyone knew
James (except me apparently). James had
been Hal’s mechanic for some time, and
Hal even knew him as a teenager. Shortly
thereafter, we struck up a friendship
based on many common experiences.
Both of us grew up in south Orange
County, and most likely we had crossed
paths several times and not realized it.
James was in the process of preparing his
1989 Carrera 911 for an event at Fontana
or somewhere, so I offered to help out
and turn a few wrenches. Thus began my
involvement with Porsche. James invited
me to the next OCR autocross event, and
even asked me if I wanted to drive his
car.
At the event I was very impressed
with how friendly everyone was. It
seemed that everyone involved had a
common goal...to have a really good time
and enjoy the camaraderie of the track.
Here was the venue I had been looking
for, and without even knowing it! I really
enjoyed pitching in, helping James with
his duties as equipment manager, learning
how autocross worked, and making
a ton of new friends. At the end of a
successful 2008 season, I was asked to
join the autocross team as Chief of Corner
Workers. I was forewarned though;
you’ll either love it or hate it. Well, I love
it. Autocross is a lot of fun, but bigger
track events like Streets of Willow are a
blast, and everyone should make it out to
one, if they can. At my second Streets,
I was having so much fun I
nearly ran out of fuel!
Becky and I try to get
to as many Club functions
as we can, sometimes we
show up in the Turbo, but
usually we bring the 1972
911t. We had so much fun at
Oktoberfest in Big Bear last
year. Rachel had just got
her permit, so she drove her
“new” Mercedes 190E with
me. Teenager+ mountain
roads + instructor Dad:
Hang on, grit your teeth and
re-check that safety belt!
Eric with James Buck’s 911 at El Toro Fields
Actually, Rachel drove very well, but she
wasn’t quite ready for any of the Porsches
just yet. Becky drove her 1986 Mercedes
560 SL with Amelia. Becky and the girls
wore their dirndls , and I had my Austrian
goat herder outfit. After a night of beer,
dancing, bratwurst, Jagermeister and
pretzels, we were certainly grateful for
the shuttle ride back to the hotel.
At first observation, the Autocross
appears to be mostly a single participant
event. However, it is very much a family
and couples activity, in fact most cars
are shared by spouses and their family
members.
I was delighted when my daughter
Rachel decided to run Autocross as soon
as she was 16. She started out at the
Porsche control clinic, and has graduated
up to the Evolution driving classes,
and joins her me at regular Autocross
events. She has received top instruction
from Steve Abbot, Chuck Bartolon, Curt
Yaws and James Buck, to name a few.
Her lap times keep get better each time
out. Thanks again to all of our talented
instructors. Her goal is to participate in
September at Fontana Speedway. Rachel
Eric and Becky and the tractor on the 4th of July
8
attends Capistrano High School as a senior
this year and has taken an interest in Art
and Art History. Her Native American
ceramics will be placed on permanent
display at the new Santa Ana courthouse
later this year. Rachel has also been
invited to the Ceramics Baccalaureate
at Saddleback College. She will attend
college locally and would like to become
an RN, as this will give her the time and
means to follow her passion for Art.
Amelia does not have a driver’s
license yet, but she can drive offroad. She
has gained valuable experience piloting
my Suzuki Samurai 4x4 rock crawler. We
regularly take trips to Anza Borrego, Big
Bear and Mohave. Amelia has learned
to use a five-speed, Hi & Lo range, and
hand throttle controls. These excursions
into pristine wilderness have helped her
develop a sense of vehicle balance and
tire placement, as well as confidence and
self reliance. I really put my patience
to the test a couple of times when we
came close to going over “soft side” (a
slow roll over). It’s a learning process,
and besides, we have full harnesses and
a six-point cage. Last summer, Amelia
spent her time as an apprentice at an
architectural firm in Laguna Hills, and
has now expressed a desire
to follow a professional
career. She is anxious to
participate in Autocross
when she is 16, but for
now we go to K-1 and
Dromo One kart tracks.
As a final thought, I
would like to thank all the
Club members we have
met for making our family
so welcome, from driving
Eric Budai track side in the white 911 of James Buck at the “Streets of Willow”
tours, Saturday breakfasts, Club events to
Autocross. It really is the members who
contribute that make a club what it is. A
warm thanks goes the Autocross team in
particular, and all the Club members that
we know.
914 Takes TOP TIME OF DAY!
OCR Ready For First DE Event.
…Beyond AutoX
Story by Steve Eguina, photos by Scott Chu, Bruce Powers and Carl Vanderschiut
Steve in his GT2G5 at Laguna Seca
Porsche 914s were looked down upon
when they first went into production.
They were considered a VW with a
Porsche emblem and referred to as
a NARP (Not A Real Porsche)! To
overcome this stigma Porsche took the
914 to the track and trounced a few of the
“real” Porsches and other race cars in the
process. In Porsche’s case they decided
to make sure the trouncing was a firm one
so they installed a six-cylinder 2.0-liter
motor and put Hurley Haywood behind
the wheel. Porsche owners then tended to
give the 914s a little more respect. As the
years have progressed the 914 and 914-6
have both become recognized as very
good track cars.
On July 12 at OCR’s Walter’s
Porsche AutoX Series Championship
Series event, over 36 years after it was
built, Even Fullerton took his fourcylinder
“modified” 914 to the top time
on the charts. Just to show this was not
a fluke, Carl Vanderschuit drove the
same car and had the second fastest time.
Sure there were a couple other hot shoes
in highly modified 400-plus horsepower
Corvettes and Ferraris that were a hair
quicker, but amongst its peers, the 914
showed that it still has what it takes!
GT3s, Turbos, and even well-driven
Boxsters were all humbled. Nice driving,
Mr. Fullerton!
As the competitors arrived at El
Toro Fields that morning they saw a
familiar face. Bruce Powers and the
Autowerkes team were setting up
displays and the most important shade.
Autowerkes, for the third year in a row,
was again sponsoring AutoX events and
this was the first of two planned for this
year. In addition they provided a nice
BBQ lunch which was prepared by Joe
Sharp. THANK YOU! Also, as many of
you know, Joe is a big fan of NARP, so he
was thrilled at the event results.
After a few hours of practice runs,
the drivers were ready to trip the timing
lights for those coveted championship
points! Yes, this was round six of
the OCR AutoX Series, where every
championship point counts! A couple of
the closest times were in class J Prepared
(made up of 84-89 Carreras), where Bob
Florey’s time of 77.530 seconds won
the class by 0.15 seconds over Scott
Romanos. They were both driving
1984 Carreras and Yoichi Matsuda
placed third in his 1989 Carrera only
0.23 seconds behind Scott. Tough Class!
Another tight class was NS/S made up
of seven stock Carrera 2, Cayman S
and Boxster S models. Adam Nguyen
led the class with a 77.740 second run.
Close behind was Christine Newcomer
in second place, and Brian Vaniman
both within a second of Adam. Class
PS/S, which is mainly stock 996 and 997
models, was won by Jeremy Bernath
driving his 2009 C4S. Greg Lush
placed second, only missing first by 0.58
seconds driving his 2006 Carrera Cab.
In the “X” class visiting Bill Schenker
drove his SCCA National Championship
Miata to a first place followed by Steve
Abbott in his Corvette and Rad Delgado
driving his latest Ferrari ride.
I want to also thank Ed McRae
and Walter’s Porsche for being OCR’s
AutoX Series Sponsor as well as this
year’s Concour Sponsor. Also GMG
and Stuttgart Performance for being
Series Support Sponsors throughout the
years. THANK YOU!
Drivers Ed, often written as DE, is
your chance to progress beyond autocross
which requires you to exit the track after
each lap. Unlike Autocross, you remain
on the course for the entire session.
Also, cars are sent out on the course in
groups, not individually. This means
that in addition to finding the fastest/
safest line around the course, you must
also deal with traffic. Inevitably, cars
will bunch up, and passing is a required
and expected part of a practice session.
Driver’s Ed let’s you experience
continuous lapping, limited passing in a
highly structured fashion, and experience
faster speeds than would be found in
an autocross format, without having to
worry about your lap times, as DE’s are
not timed.
we should go back to our former name
“Driving Events Team”) plans to hold
Cleaning Your
Engine – Part 1
By Bev Gould
Cleaning the engine at first looks like a
daunting task, but if you take your time
and have patience the benefits will last
for years. Keeping an engine clean does
more than to enhance its appearance. A
clean engine makes it easier to spot oil
and fluid leaks, will run cooler and is
easier to repair/maintain. Although this
article is geared toward the 911’s - the
principles apply to most vehicles.
Let’s assume you have a vehicle
whose engine has never been touched
beyond changing the oil and minor
maintenance. It only takes a couple years
for this stuff to build up on an engine, so
this washing routine would also be good
for your other automobiles as well.
You look at all the grease and gunk
and want to say “Forget it!” My Porsche
911E was like that, the car had been raced,
rallied and toured to the point I had over
300,000 miles on it. The engine was well
maintained and clean by those standards.
But not where I thought a person could
put their hands in there without coming
out with a grease trophy.
So where do you start? Start with
a good engine wash. Take a can of
engine cleaner (WD-40, GUNK, Citrus
Degreaser or some other comparable
product) and go down to the local “Do
It Yourself” (DIY) car wash. Check the
signs at the DIY – some don’t allow
engine washing. Why the DIY, because:
A. The DIY tanks are set up for
yucky engine junk and chemicals.
B. Most of us do not have a highpressure
hose at home; you’ll need it.
C. The area around your car will
be a mess afterwards.
D. In many cities, like in California,
you could be cited for washing hazardous
materials down the storm drain. For
example, the storm drains in our area
flow out to the ocean.
Here are the following things you
will need to take with you on your journey
to the local DIY (do-it-yourselfer).
Tape, Baggies, toothbrush, plastic
wrap, rags, plastic trash bags, small towels,
large towels, note pad, rubber bands, post
it notes, gloves and lots of change.
First thing to do is protect your
electrical components. Take a baggie and
put it over the distributor, next use the
rubber band or tape to secure the baggie
in place. Each model is unique on where
the electrical components are located; my
911E has electronics on the left side of the
engine. I use the plastic wrap to protect this
area and tape to secure it. I also use plastic
wrap on some of the electrical harnesses
and the coil. Look anywhere else the water
may cause you car-starting problems. If
you have exposed carburetors, use the
plastic wrap or Baggies to protect them.
Next thing I do is disconnect the coil
wire, this way I won’t pull a no-brainer
This the electrical area I wrap with plastic bags and
plastic wrap – keep it dry
of starting the car with plastic inside
the engine. You can guess why I started
doing this. Pay close attention to where
the decals are, you want to protect these
as well. Write yourself a note to reconnect
the coil wire and put it on the steering
wheel. On the note pad, write down the
places you put the plastic and tape/rubber
bands, it may seem redundant but better
safe than sorry. Now take the large towels
and place them over your fenders and
the deck lid. This will protect your paint
from any debris and chemicals that may
over spray. I suggest you wear old clothes
while cleaning your engine and use gloves
to protect your hands from the chemicals
(latex is best). Washing the car afterwards
is a good idea; I usually take my car wash
(I use Einszett Perl shampoo) with me so I
can make sure no chemicals from washing
the engine are on the paint.
Now you are ready to attack the built
up yucky gunk. Take your engine cleaner
and apply it liberally in the areas of the
engine that have the most built up grease
on them. Let the engine cleaner soak for a
few minutes, it will start eating away at the
grease and dirt. Depending on how bad the
buildup is, this can take anywhere from a
few minutes to 20 minutes. You probably
will not get it all this first go around, so
keep that in mind. While the engine
cleaner is soaking, take the toothbrush
and gently work the engine cleaner on the
worst spots, if you have a severe build up,
you may have to do this with a larger (not
stiffer) brush. Once you have determined
the engine cleaner has stopped working,
you are ready to steam clean.
Set the DIY’s wand setting to engine
or steam clean (it may be slightly different
depending on where you live). Take care
not to use the wand on the exterior paint
Pull the coil wire off and wrap coil + wire in plastic to
keep dry. Don’t forget the distributor
of your car. The heat and pressure from the
wand was not meant for your paint. Now use
the wand inside the engine compartment to
steam away the engine cleaner and grease.
Be patient and get the wand onto the nooks
and crannies. Do not forget to get the sides
of the engine compartments as well, dirt
gets kicked up into the engine from the fan
and always seems to find it’s way on the
shelves of the engine.
While you are steaming the inside of
the engine, make sure you do not get water
(Continued on pg. 17)
Sheet metal below the valve covers usually need more
than one soaking. Don’t spray into the spark plug holes,
use a toothbrush or QTip
The key turns, the heart starts.
There is no feeling quite like being behind the wheel of the
new 911. Totally reengineered at its core with enhancements
to the classic design on the outside, it was built to create a
bond between car and driver like never before. Its new optional
Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) allows for faster shifting
speeds, and the new Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) system adds
Cleaning Your Engine (Cont. from pg. 14)
inside your plastic covers. Remember
shooting the water onto a surface will
cause the water to go upwards, so be
aware of your plastic and not to get water
up there. Also if the inside of your engine
compartment is painted, do not put the
wand too close to the paint, it could strip
it off. Once you are satisfied you have
taken out as much dirt as possible (this
go around), set the wand to rinse. The
rinse water usually has a softening agent
and will rinse the chemicals out of the
engine.
A word of warning, GUNK works
great but smells horrible. If you use
GUNK, do not do this on the same day
you are going to use the car for a date
or tour. It takes a couple days for the
smell to go away. There are other engine
cleaners out there (see list above) , I have
tried the Citrus ones (they smell better),
WD-40, and GUNK. For the nasty jobs I
use the GUNK, for the easier ones (like
the newer car) I use the Citrus engine
cleaners.
When you are finished rinsing the
engine out shut off the wand. Now take
the rags you brought with you and wipe
down the engine. Make sure you use
some pressure on the rags while wiping
Be careful of painted surfaces. Clean under oil filter/filler
it down. The grease has softened because
for the heat of the water and will come off
easily in your rag. When you are finished
with one rag (because it is too dirty or wet)
put it in one of the plastic trash bags. Keep
wiping down until the engine is rather
dry or you run out of rags. Next take the
towels off the deck lid and fenders. Wipe
down the paint with the part of the towels
that did not get wet or exposed to the
chemicals. When done with the towels,
put these in the other trash sack.
Now you are ready to get the engine
ready for starting. First take ALL the
plastic, plastic wrap, tape and rubber
bands out of the engine. Next reconnect
the coil wire and make sure there are not
any other foreign objects in the engine,
like towels, toothbrushes or gloves.
Check your notepad to make sure you got
all your protective wrapping out.
You may want to put a few more
quarters in the machine and rinse down
the area you have been working. Chances
are some of your greasy gunk might be
on your shoes or get on someone else’s,
be considerate.
Sometimes our new cleaned cars do
not want to start right away after an engine
washing, make sure you give it plenty of
time to start and take care not to flood the
engine. If you protected you electrical
components from water, your car should
not have any problems starting up.
If you should have a problem, push
the car into the sunshine and open the deck
lid. Within a few minutes the components
should dry out and you’ll be on your way.
Let the car warm up before driving in
traffic, and then drive it several mils to let
it dry completely.
All put back together and ready to go - not too shabby
huh? In Part 2 we will dig deeper into the engine to get
those detail areas.
If your engine was really bad, you
may have to do the engine wash a couple
times to get the worst junk out. Bear in
mind, the grease and gunk took years to
get there and it will not give up its home
easily.
Bev has been showing her 1970 911E
Targa for many years and the car has won
at many Concours event. The car now has
about 440,000 miles on it and keeping the
engine clean is pretty easy. Just an hour
of touch up and it is Concours ready, it is
the maintenance that is the key and really
worth it when people go ooohhhh when
you show them the engine.
Concours
Tidbits
From Dick DeRose...2009 Concours
Perspective from the Chair
I arrived at 5:30 am and was
elated that the City’s grounds keepers
remembered to turn the sprinkler system
off and the power on (it’s the little
things that matter). With no rain and
such a beautiful setting – it was a very
promising start to the day. “The Doors”
opened at 6 am and it was time to see how
well registration was planned. Low and
behold―no bottlenecks. It was sweet to
watch the quick flow of entrants through
Registration , a great job by the team.
The Field Marshall’s team was superb
in getting the cars parked as fast as the
Registration people sent them their way.
With those two worries put to
bed, it was on to the pride of watching
our young Marines present the Colors
while the group Girls Nite Out sang the
National Anthem . It brought tears to my
eyes – and set a patriotic mood for the
day.
I kept waiting for something to go
wrong. But, other than a little excitement
with the Marriott wedding party, which
was quickly resolved, the Concours went
off without a major hitch. (phew!)
To our wonderful committee - emcee,
judging, scoring, picnic/lunch activities,
sponsors, and our many volunteers – I
congratulate a Job Well Done! I couldn’t
have asked for more. My martini and
cigar that evening capped off a wonderful
and successful day.
When you see any of the Committee
Chairs give them a big thank you. They
are Armand Gastelo, Bob Scheussler &
Ken Fredrickson (Sponsorship), Arnie
Shusterman & Paul Wilkinson (Vehicle
Display Development), C.L. Jarusek &
Nicole Boggs (Picnic Activities), Chris
De Rose (Registration), Garey Cooper
(Emcee), Gloria Moore (Scoring),
Joe Nedza (Judging), Norm Follis
(Field Marshall) and Pamela Horton
(photography).
From Nicole Boggs...
The triumphant picnic displays had
to be my favorite memory of the concours
this year. Along with Cindy Nimtz and
Barbara D’Allessandro, I was one of the
lucky ladies in charge of judging. Boy,
was it difficult. Each picnic had it’s own
unique personality.
Some folks really used their Porsche,
like Doug and Theo Russell, who themed
their picnic around their 930’s Whale
Tail, serving lunch on the wing. Gail
and Jim Reinholdt’s picnic was a very
cheerful display with busy bees buzzing
everywhere, even inside of the trunk of
their Speed Yellow 997 where the Bee
Movie was playing on a DVD! The entry
that got the most looks was Annie Lush’s
with the amazing peacock. She kept the
Porsche theme throughout her picnic with
every entrée started with the letter P. I got
a sample of her Pistachio mousse―very
yummy!
And finally one of my favorites was
Judy Lech and Gloria Moore’s entry. They
did an amazing job of creating a Picnic
by the Sea, with salmon mousse and sea
shell table charms against the beautiful
Azzuro California Blue backdrop of the
Lechs’ 997 Club Coupe, almost like the
ocean.
Thank you Barbara and Cindy for
making the team a lot of fun!
From Pamela Horton...
Being the photographer for the
Concours gave me the opportunity to
chat with many more Porsche owners
than I ordinarily would have. I think we
had a very lively group this year! For me,
the most fun was taking photos of the
people prepping their cars for the White
Glove judging...nail biting time! There
were some really fun photos that I took
of members in some very interesting
positions. Like this photo of (I don’
know this guy’s name.). (Concours_16
attached)
It was great to spend some time
chatting with old friends and making
new ones. Three of my girl friends and
my daughter were in attendance working
our sponsor booth. We also dined royally
on the delicious gourmet feast that Gloria
Moore and Judy Lech prepared for us as
a consequence of my winning the lunch
at the December Christmas party’s silent
auction. It was fun to take a break and chat
for a bit with Peggy Huddleston, who is a
friend I wouldn’t have if it wasn’t for our
common passion for Porsches!
From Garey Cooper...
Other than arriving and seeing
the beautiful grass lawn stretch to the
ocean cliff covered with great Porsches,
my favorite memory is being minutely
scrutinized by the redoubtable Mr.
Mike Mansolino as my personal judge.
There are few people in the sport with
the success and experience of Mike at
Concours; in fact, he was a winner again
this year. So his personal attention to my
own crate of Stuttgart screws was a good
opportunity to learn how to do things
right―the Concours way. Besides there
is a thrill to having your own personal
judge; there are laws to prevent this in the
state and federal judiciary so it may be the
only opportunity you’ll have to get one
without threat of criminal prosecution!
From Gloria Moore...
To begin, a huge thank you to Dick
and Chris DeRose for putting together
a well-organized and delightful event.
Now, next year if you can only control
the wind, Dick!
I was in charge of scoring the forms
completed by our excellent judges from
throughout Zone 8 and ably led by Joe
Nezda. My very efficient and accurate
team consised of Grace Fredrickson and
Brian Quadt, who graciously brought a
replacement for his lovely Carolyn who
had a “command performance” and
couldn’t be with us. Thanks to them, I
was able to slip away and help Judy Lech
serve the lunch that we offered for bid at
the Holiday silent auction.
How proud Judy and I were to be
able to do something that was fun and
benefitted Orangewood Children’s Home
at the same time. A thank you to Pete
Lech and Larry Moore who acted as
wind breaks as we set out our menu. I
look forward to next year’s 40th White
Glove Concours in the same place with
many of the same people leading the
way. And, I heard that our terrific emcee,
Garey Cooper (aka the velveteen voice)
will also be back at the mike. Please tell
all your Porsche friends that this will be
an event not to miss! The date will be
June 12, 2010.
From Joe Nedza...
As the time was getting close to
judging to begin, there were a number
of entrants in Divisions that have their
18
Picnic Contest Winners
A Sampling of the
Picnic Displays
engines judged that sauntered up to me
from time to time. Somewhat hesitantly,
each asked me, in a very friendly yet very
concerned tone words to the effect of,
“Your wife, Karen, isn’t going to judge
the engine with those slender fingers
of hers, is she?” I assured them that
Karen was judging the undercarriage, so
Engine Girl would be nowhere near their
carburetors or alternators! Aloha.
From Jack & Kathy Farwick...
Let’s start off with my least favorite
thing was having to be there at 5:30
am to help with registration, but once
we arrived you forgot about how early
it was. Everyone just pitched in and
started working and had a lot of fun
doing it. Great Cars. Great music. Great
picnic displays.
From Ken Fredrickson...
I arrived at the concours early and
as usual was excited to see everyone and
their cars. The cleaning supplies were
strewn out with chairs, picnic blankets
along with any loose items from the
cars. The routine of cleaning cars and
talking Porsche is a common experience
for me. Then around 9 am everything
came to an abrupt halt. Garey Cooper,
the Master of Ceremonies, announced
over the PA system the arrival of the
United States Marine color guard from
Camp Pendelton as they marched onto
the field to present the Colors. Garey
gave a very historical background of
the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines known
as The Magnificent Bastards. The field
went silent as everyone stopped what
they were doing, stood at attention
were happy to be a part of the OCR
A Very Good 2009 Porsche
Parade
Story by Gloria Moore, photos by Judy Lech, Gloria & Larry Moore
This was the 6th Porsche Parade for
Larry and me since we joined PCA in 1998.
Our first one was in Sacramento, then
Boise, Hershery, Portland, San Diego and
this year in Keystone, CO. Each has had
the same traditional events―Concours,
Autocross, TSD Rally. But over the years
more activities have been added including
Gimmick Rallyes and Tours.
The Porsche clientele appears to
be changing a bit. By that I mean that
more and more newer Porsche owners
want to enjoy driving their car and prefer
to participate in less complicated and
detailed activities like Concours and Time
Distance Rallyes. The Autocross is still
a sell-out at each Parade, but attendance
at the other two traditional competition
events has been dropping. The tours,
which have been well organized and
focus on easy driving are becoming more
and more popular each year.
What this means is that the annual
Parade is offering something for nearly
every Porsche enthusiast.
And I haven’t yet mentioned the Tech
Sessions, Workshops, Goodie Store, and
the chance to mingle with a truly devoted
Porsche crowd for six days. And I must
not forget the Welcome Party, and Awards
Dinners for Concours and Autocross and
the final Dinner where a trip to Germany
is always the grand prize in the drawing.
In the future, there will be a national
PCA committee organizing Parade. The
members will be volunteers with former
Parade leadership experience and they will
direct the planning and implimentation of
the annual events, which will continue to
move to different locations in the U.S.
and Canada each year.
Every location provides its own
special atmosphere and challenges.
Personally, I have particulary enjoyed the
smaller venues like Boise and Keystone,
where you don’t have to deal with the
everyday traffic and parking problems
trying to move and park the more than
800 Porsches during the week.
The camaraderie also appears to be
stronger when the venue is not competing
with the hubbub of big city life. It
seems more like a real vacation, albeit
a busy one!
Our Orange Coast Region had
10 couples at the Keystone Parade,
at least four of them came home with
the outstanding trophies...Judy &
Pete Lech in Concours, Bob Nimtz
and James Liberty in Autocross, and
Tom Gould with his daughter Lisa in
the TSD Rallye. Congratulations, and
you won a lovely and unusual trophy.
Another tradition at Parade is to
have an individual event for each Zone.
At the Zone 8 party all members from
the zone had a chance to get together
and interact with all the other people
at Parade from the regions in the zone.
It was fun and very friendly. Michael
Dolphin, our Zone Rep picked a very
ice location at a local brewery/pub.
The next two Parades will
be quite a drive from Southern
California―2010 in St. Charles,
Illinois, and 2011 in Killington,
Vermont. However in 2012 it will
be in Park City, Utah...just a one day
drive from home. Think about your
vacation plans for 2012 and consider
coming to a Parade. I really think
you will have fun and a wonderful
vacation.
“Let There Be Light”
Story by Frank Cusenza PCAOCR member
You already drive the best production
sports car (Porsche) with terrific
handling and braking. Just because the
original owner didn’t opt for the Xenon
package or the fact that your vehicle was
manufactured before this option was
available does not mean you have to miss
out on this newer technology. Your daily
driver no longer has to suffer with low
visibility headlamps.
First some basics: Halogen lights
have a filament like a normal household
bulb. Xenon bulbs do not contain
filaments but are filled with gas much
like a florescent tube. The color of the
bulb depends on the gas mixture used in
manufacture. Daylight has a temperature
of 5,500 K (kelvin). Manufacturers
assert that Xenon headlights will become
the predominant type of headlight used
in future cars. Not only are they three
times brighter than traditional headlights,
they provide better illumination for
drivers, and the high intensity discharge
system they employ is lighter and less
expensive for car manufacturers to install
in vehicles. Xenon headlights are also
environmentally friendly. They typically
last up to three times longer than halogen
lights, while requiring half the current
to function. My 2003 Boxster came
equipped with H7 55-watt bulbs which
give off 2,700 K temperature light. The
conversion kit I chose gives off 6,000
K light while providing three times the
lumens output and uses only 35 watts of
power. This is a much better solution
than increasing the H7 bulb to 100 watts
which only frosts the inner lens of the
headlight module making it useless.
A misconception exists regarding the
ratings of Xenon bulbs that a 12,000 bulb
is a stronger light source that a 3,000 bulb.
Wrong. The rating is used to indicate the
color of the light produced and lumens
decrease as the numbers go up: 3K
bulbs are yellow, 5K yellow/white, 6K
white/blue, 8K blue, 10K blue/violet,
12K violet. There are a couple of things
to consider when making your choice.
Daylight should be your first choice since
this gives you the best night visibility and
makes the light emitted look natural. I
chose 6K; however, 5K might be a best
choice. Xenon kits come with 2 bulbs,
2 ballasts, and 2 harness kits including
rubber grommets for pass through into the
lamp assembly.
Let’s address the projector light
provided as OEM equipment. The
projector lens’ primary function is to
project the beam of light to the driving
surface. With factory-installed Xenon,
during heavy braking the light beam
would adjust up so as to maintain proper
vertical height. This year the feature has
been expanded to move to the side when
turning. This is only available through
factory installed Xenon; and although
you could purchase the factory headlamp
assemblies, you would not have the same
functionality.
I need to mention that factoryinstalled
Xenon headlights are DOT
approved but aftermarket Xenon kits are
not DOT approved in California. We have
all seen many Honda and Toyota cars on
the road which enjoy the advantages of
Xenon lamps. I checked the light pattern
of my Halogen lights before I made the
change by placing painter’s tape on the
white cabinets on the back wall in my
garage and having the car 20 feet away at
the entrance. After making the installation
I repeated the test using the Xenon lights
with no headlamp adjustment and found
the light patterns to be identical. Both
bulbs have identical bases and thus are
fully interchangeable. As a matter of
fact, you can save the old Halogen bulbs
to use as spares, put them back in the car
when you sell it, and take your Xenon set
to your new ride, if it does not come so
equipped.
Figure 1 Headlamp Assembly
The reason I am writing this article is
the fact that I was not able to find anyone
to answer my questions on installing a
HID (High Intensity Discharge Lamps)
system in a Porsche. 1. Get one kit to
replace the low beam lights. 2. Turn
on your low beam lights and determine
which bulbs you are replacing. No,
Johnny...low beam does not mean that
it is mounted lower than the high beam.
In my Boxster the low beams are on top
and the high beams are on the bottom. I
had both assemblies in the car and had
to redo them all. Save your time based
on my experience. It’s not necessary to
disconnect the battery. Just turn off the
lights and do the work.
Figure 2 Lamp Assembly Cover
No wire cutting is required to install
the harness; however, you will be required
to drill a 1″ hole in the cover to allow the
plugs to pass through. I used a 2x4 for
support, predrilled a pilot hole and then
used a 1″ wood bit to finish drilling the
cover. I cleaned it all up with a Dremel
tool to remove some support veins on the
covers inside so that the grommet would
fit snugly.
Figure 3 Wired Lamp Assembl
Do not touch the Xenon bulbs with
your bare fingers. The oils from your
skin will cause premature failure due
to hot spots on the bulbs. Only handle
the base of the bulbs and be sure that the
Rice’s Ramblings
Story and photos by Lee Rice
Lee Rice showing his 911 at Breakfast Club
I made a decision to make what I hope to
be a final update to my 911 of 38 years.
As I have said before, the 911 begs
to be changed. With the overflowing
abundance of parts available from
Porsche and the recyclers, one can make
almost any model into any other 911
model or variant. Some shops have made
mid-engine cars out of 911s. Even put
V-8 Chevrolet mid-engines in them.
Then there are some who folks
fanatically enjoy keeping every single
original piece on their original 911.
And the same goes for every other
Porsche model out there. Our Orange
Coast Region has the concours winning
Porsches here to prove it!
In my situation I decided to update
the tired and a bit beat up body to a basic
930 Turbo with new Dansk® steel flairs
(with small torsion bar holes―a rare
find). However, I also updated to the
short hood and bought Getty Design “Ruf
CTR Wide/Body” front & rear bumpers.
I made reinforcements under the
glass–fiber bumpers, using ½″ plywood
cut out to match the top of the bumper
profiles and made steel box section
framing with two parallel tubes that slide
into two matching tubes welded to the
chassis tub, front & rear. The bumper &
support system is bonded to the bumper
and refinished. It is very strong. The
bumpers can easily be removed and slide
off their respective rails for access to the
rear exhausts & turbocharger. In front,
the 964 condenser or 993 Oil cooler are
easily accessed.
I also installed a 1972 oil door on the
right rear fender for a 993 oil tank/filter/
thermostat unit, with the oil fill access on
the outside.I wanted to stay with an 8-9
inch wide wheel in front and a 10-12 inch
wheel in back as I needed more rubber
for traction. The Turbo flair combination
offered the best solution and it looks are
fantastic. The Ruf CTR bumpers offer a
nice uncluttered look, free of those rubberbaby-buggy-bumper
looks of the factory
rubber infested design. (my opinion,
sorry). I love the new clean elegant look,
reminiscent of the sharp lines of the early
901-911‛long hood’ Porsches.
I ripped the entire interior out and
welded up some thin metal (rust) and
upgraded the structure for strength in
several areas. I also fabricated new seat
frame rails for the new four-way electric,
custom made from Recaro, sport seats.
[See last year’s Ramblings for story on
the details.]
I also installed Dyna Mat®, a ¼”selfsticking,
thick sound, & heat insulating
material with a thick aluminum top layer,
which I placed everywhere, including
under the head liner and inside the door
skins as well as the outer door sheet
metal, and complete inside the interior.
On top of the Dyna-Mat I installed
DynaLyner® a self-sticking dense dark
This is his car as prepared for painting in his own
garage! That is the preparation was done by him, not
the painting as you will see!
foam material that further deadens noise
and insulates. With the windows closed it
is really QUIET. Even with a performance
exhaust system!
Following the interior work the
body work was started but first I needed
to find a respectable paint shop. When I
say respectable, I mean a shop and owner
who understands what your car is, how
you will use it, and listens to you. I went
to so many shops; some with those highend
reputations and after preliminaries I
usually heard something like, “we can do
you, like we did (so and so) for around
$12,000.” That was all. They did not
listen.
I needed a finish that would stand
up to be driven daily―in rain, cold, and
wind. I would occasionally polish & clay
bar the finish, use a duster frequently,
and use detail spray at least once a week.
Once or twice a year I get my 911 up on
jack stands, remove wheels tires and with
Simple Green® wash & blast out the
road crud and grime. So I needed enamel
paint with hardener and wanted it to cure
for 2-3 weeks, and then be color sanded,
then machine buffed. NO clear coats! No
Custom colors. Nothing fancy. I also
wanted to finish my 911, in “Mexico
Blue,” a 1974 Carrera color.
I looked and called and finally right
under my nose, I made contact with
Danny and his crew at DND-AUTO
PAINT TOUCH. Danny has done custom
re-spraying for me before on one very
difficult to match 3.0 liter Turbo Carrera
which has no box section under the wing,
and got a 3.3L Turbo tail to fit over the
new C-2 intercooler I installed. It needed
a paint match to the original copper color
finish which was faded and had a clear
coat applied over it years ago. Danny got
it right and the customer is delighted.
I have had other fixes done there
too but when we got to talking about a
complete repaint on my own 911 it got
serious but without any hot air or “BS.”
Danny gave me a price like a third what
the ‘name’ shops were offering, and
Danny was interested in doing the unusual
things like installing the nose bulkhead
for the new short hood and installing the
oil door. Those were a tough jobs! Plus
there are always issues that come up. He
simply fixed them and went on and got it
done on schedule AND on price!
“Amazing! I didn’t think it was possible to make the seats
look like new!” (Barry, Fullerton)
Barry was just like many of you; he loved his car and wanted it to look its’ best and was
disappointed with the way his leather seats looked. They weren’t in bad condition but they
were showing the signs of wear. He didn’t want to spend the $1500.00 + labor* or more that
it would take to replace the leather and so he thought he would just have to live with it. He
didn’t and neither do you! He called Pioneer Leather Restoration, Inc. Since his leather
was in good condition except for the appearance, we came to his home and re-applied the
finish coating that is found on all upholstery leather. Three hours and $295.00** later you see
what his reaction was.
Call today to make your Porsche leather seats look like new and, as a bonus when the
work is performed, mention this ad and we will give you for free a leather cleaning and conditioning
kit (A $12.95 value). All work is guaranteed.
Autocross Corner
(Cont. from pg. 11)
another Driver’s Education event and
possibly a Zone 8 Time Trial event. Can’t
wait and want to compete in a couple Zone
8 Time Trials THIS YEAR? Here are the
dates: Oct. 17-18 at Spring Mountain
Motorsport Ranch, NV and Nov 21-22
at Buttonwillow Raceway. Goto: http://
zone8.pca.org/ for more information.
Time Trials are not an entry level
activity. A minimum of six Autocrosses
or four Autocrosses and a Driver’s School
are required to participate. Additionally,
safety equipment requirements are more
stringent than for Autocross. Time Trials
are limited to licensed participants or
students. You obtain your license by
satisfying at least two instructors that
you are competent to compete at an event
unsupervised. It takes at least two events
to achieve this. Licenses are issued by
Zone 8. Equivalent licenses from other
sanctioning bodies are recognized and
allowed.
Typically, a Time Trial is a two-day
event, (however, they are held in one
day on occasion.) The first day is all
practice runs; the second day has practice
runs in the morning, with timed runs
happening later in the afternoon. For the
timed runs, cars are divided into classes
so that drivers are competing against
other cars with similar horsepower-toweight
ratios and modifications. Please
note that the competitive nature of this
is, like Autocross, against the clock. It
is NOT wheel to wheel racing, even
though the practice sessions may give
that appearance.
Rice’s Ramblings (Cont. from pg. 31) Let There Be Light (Cont. from pg. 29)
I also got a one-week curing for before I could drive it. Now eight months
the primer and a three-week cure for the later I am enjoying a job done right. In
paint. Exactly as I wanted and thanks to 38 years I finally have a 911 with a paint
the weather too.
finish that I am greatly satisfied with. It is
Things to do before going into pain; easy to dust off and wipe down and has
Fit or install any new sheet metal on the a nice reflective finish that I have always
car before removing major parts like admired on the 930 Turbo.
window glass, seats, carpeting, engines, Danny’s DND is located in Stanton,
etc. You need to fit any body parts California on 11782 Western Avenue
especially 911 wheel flairs with normal Unit #1. Phone 714/898-6356
street weight (including a ½ tank of gas) P.S. I have received no special price
to get the look right. Also If you are or compensation for this information.
going to install larger wheels & tires. You
must put them on before installing major
body parts. We installed the wheel flairs
first thing. Then drove my 911 home and
stripped out the interior, engine, trans,
interior, emptied storage compartments,
Figure 4 LF Fender Interior
removed sun visors, radio, instruments,
shifter boot, seat belts, head liner, and
either borrow a junk steering wheel or
completely cover over yours in plastic
with lots of duct tape.
The crew at DND painting signs off on Lee’s new
restored blue devil Turbo 911.
Body shops leave windows open and
your car will need to be moved around
other jobs as you car sits while primer is
curing. Body shops are dusty. Like tons
of the stuff. It gets in everywhere! My
car was completely covered in plastic
and taped shut after the first week of
new paint curing and it still got in places
unimaginable. That is just the way it is,
so be prepared.
After I got my new Evo-Blue home,
the reassemble started. It took a month
Lee’s painted car ready to return to his garage for
re-assembly.
The R/P 993ttS is now driven daily
in it’s 1987 Carrera-Ruf chassis. The
dyno runs were done in the middle of a
heat wave and temps during the first runs
were 88-91º degrees F. Running on 103
unleaded fuel at only 0.8 BAR boost, it
made 503.78 HP at the rear wheels. This
is a first run for power as this engine now
need street miles before the full dyno
settings can be tailored to the car.
The final configuration will have
a rotary dial for multi-power settings.
Using its MoTeC M-600, it can be dialed
in for “Valet Mode,” no revs over 2,500
and no boost. Then graduating up to: 91
octane fuel max power @ 0.8, then on to
max boost on 91 octane and finally stages
with 103 racing unleaded gas.
We are also working on a extra lean
@ cruise speed range with special sensors
use. But that is a way off. The owner was
quoted to say, “this is the fastest car he
has ever driven.” Among his cars are a
2005 GT-2, 1958 Corvette with blown
500+ Cu/In engine, and various other
crazy thing….
********************************
I appreciate letters sent to me from
James, who showed interest in late
technology and applications to Porsche.
The new ball bearing turbochargers I
installed on the 3.6ttS engine are one I
will be reporting on. Some shops are
installing things like this and, with slow
tuning efforts, are managing to make
a twin turbo engine drive like a big
V-8―smooth and mallow. If you like
that. With modern tunable computers,
like MoTeC, you can tune your engine to
run just the way you like them to.
Godspeed.
notch is properly mated to the housing.
This insures your headlight adjustment
remains correct. The power input to the
ballast plugs into the existing plug for
the old Halogen bulbs. The Xenon bulbs
come plugged into the harness and are
ready to be placed in the lens.
There’s not a lot of room, but along
the upper left side is a metal rib which
comes out ½″. The fender has only a
slight curve in this area and you want to
mount the ballast as far back as possible.
It’s not possible to use anything other
than velcro. I found 2x3″ Scotch
(#rf7051) reclosable fasteners at my
local art supply center and mounted it
on the bottom of the ballast. Attached
the mate to it sticky side up, cleaned the
interior of the fender with thinner and
placed as far back as possible so as not
to interfere with the headlamp assembly
once it was reinstalled. This also allows
removal of the whole assembly in the
future by removing the ballast from the
fender for easy access.
Cost of the kit $79.00 plus $11.00
Shipping. No tax. Installation time 2
hours. Velcro $3.80. The supplier I used
was: http://www.hidxenonheadlights.
Editor’s Notes (Cont. from pg. 5)
RSR programs might stay fairly strong
as carriers of the corporate escutcheon,
if anything because they don’t threaten
any program from the rest of the VW
holdings, and this may be the best news
as arguably these cars advance the street
cars we all can drive very directly. On the
other hand, what becomes of the R8 and
R10, the “911 fighters” from Audi? Oh
and how does the Panamera fit in against
the A6 and A8?
If you’ve got ideas and/or opinions
about this let me know. Hey write up
an article and share it with your club
members; these are indeed “interesting
times.”
Speaking of the Panamera
It is here! A Porsche with four doors. No
that’s not a first, of course the Cayenne
gets that distinction in history. But
Porsche now has a sedan and the early
driver reviews I’ve read are generally
complimentary. The styling on the other
hand revives the controversies that I
remember with the Cayenne launch, those
that hate it and those that love it with no
one in between. I have not seen one in
person so I’ll withhold judgment, but I
will say that I’m hoping it looks better in
the flesh.
Epidermis
I always thought that Epidermis was the
name of a Roman Emperor. Or was he
the guy that pulled the thorn out of the
lion’s claw? But no, that is the correct
Latin name for your skin. As the poem
say, “be kind to your skin, it’s the only
thing that holds you in.” After many years
being outdoors, my own pelt is getting a
bit used up. Enter the mostly painless
Doctor Peter Helton, the friend to my
skin. Can you imagine what I’d look like
if Dr. Helton didn’t blast me with liquid
nitrogen from time to time? And to top
it all off, the good Doctor drives a GT3.
That’s the kind of contact you can make
in the Porsche Club, although I can’t
guarantee you’ll end up as good looking
as me. But it’s worth a try.
Stimulus
Mrs. Cooper is no stranger to deficit
spending. When I borrow her car―the
black BMW 750i I call the NSDAP staff
car―I struggle to keep it to the left when I
drive past South Coast Plaza or any other
one of a dozen high-end shopping centers.
Now you too can stimulate the economy
by keeping your Porsche in tip top shape
with our sponsors. Read the president’s
column this month, Mr. Armand Gastelo
makes a good point.
Ciao Bella!
Speaking of Mr. Gastelo, I drove with him
to Italy last month; yes really. Armand
has an insiders touch with Pelican Resort
and we got the royal Italian treatment,
including a bit of bubbly on the terrace
overlooking the sparkling blue Pacific.
The whole day and tour which began
at our newer sponsor (?) was molto
Bello. It made us feel lucky, and happy
to be part of the Orange Coast Region.
So it is appropriate at this point to say
