Editor’s Notes by Garey Cooper Summer Time and the Livin’ ain’t Easy In the thermadorean month of August the tinted and treated windows of the Orange Coast Region tower reflect the summer heat back into the foetid masses toiling so far below. Don’t get me wrong, we do feel the heat and occasionally there is a shortage of ice cubes to cool our Lime Rickys and Singapore Slings. But this only happens when we are all in one place at the same time, which is unusual in that there is so much to do within the club activities. Rallyes, Autocrosses, Tours, Meetings, Technical Sessions are all on the agenda. What do you want to do with your Porsche? Whatever it is, we have it and probably more than once or even twice per year. Buddy can you spare a dime? They say that 2010 is going to be better than 2009. I don’t know who they are but I’d like to meet them and discover their basis for optimism. We have had a few advertisers drop out and some membership loss but we seem to have stabilized at around 1,100 or so members. And that’s still an appreciable amount of maniacs driving our type of motor car. Plus paying their dues. Dropping the Pilot In the Edwardian era that leading line was the caption of a famous political cartoon of young Kaiser Wilhelm dropping Otto Von Bismarck from the ship of state. I don’t know if Wedelin Wideking would appreciate any connection with Bismarck other than a more-than-usual Teutonic name. However he is the current pilot being dropped from the ship of state known as Porsche. The usual incorrect and misleading headlines are streaming across your sporting and financial papers but suffice to say Wedelin seems to have been jettisoned and Porsche seems to be headed into a new era. It is hard for your correspondent to believe that after years of profitability that other car companies could only dream about, the Porsche management felt compelled to make substantial short-term borrowings to purchase Volkswagen stock; but that is the story. And now the accumulated debt lands on the company like a millstone and the hunter becomes instead the prey. What does this mean in future? Well, its way too early to say, and I am as far removed from those halls of power as chalk is to cheese. But one can’t imagine another Porsche LMP prototype with Audi fielding cars into that class and perhaps becoming a corporate cousin.
