engines judged that sauntered up to me<br />

from time to time. Somewhat hesitantly,<br />

each asked me, in a very friendly yet very<br />

concerned tone words to the effect of,<br />

“Your wife, Karen, isn’t going to judge<br />

the engine with those slender fingers<br />

of hers, is she?” I assured them that<br />

Karen was judging the undercarriage, so<br />

Engine Girl would be nowhere near their<br />

carburetors or alternators! Aloha.<br />

Let’s start off with my least favorite<br />

thing was having to be there at 5:30<br />

am to help with registration, but once<br />

we arrived you forgot about how early<br />

it was. Everyone just pitched in <strong>and</strong><br />

started working <strong>and</strong> had a lot of fun<br />

doing it. Great Cars. Great music. Great<br />

picnic displays.<br />

I arrived at the concours early <strong>and</strong><br />

as usual was excited to see everyone <strong>and</strong><br />

their cars. The cleaning supplies were<br />

strewn out with chairs, picnic blankets<br />

along with any loose items from the<br />

cars. The routine of cleaning cars <strong>and</strong><br />

talking Porsche is a common experience<br />

for me. Then around 9 am everything<br />

came to an abrupt halt. Garey Cooper,<br />

the Master of Ceremonies, announced<br />

over the PA system the arrival of the<br />

United States Marine color guard from<br />

Camp Pendelton as they marched onto<br />

the field to present the Colors. Garey<br />

gave a very historical background of<br />

the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines known<br />

as The Magnificent Bastards. The field<br />

went silent as everyone stopped what<br />

they were doing, stood at attention<br />
