Case Details:
Victim Shahul Hameed, age 37, is a resident of Pattukotai. He was the Town President of TMMK at
Adhirampattinam.
Shahul Hameed had planned to construct a mosque on his land, with the permission of the VAO. However,
Chairman Abdul Vahaab objected – saying that the area belonged to the Panchayat – and blocked the way
with a tractor. Angry, the villagers, pushed Abdul Vahaab’s tractor. The Adhirampatinam police responded
by engaging in a “lathi charge,” injuring between thirty and forty people.
Shahul Hameed thus filed a complaint with higher officials. Abdul Vahaab thus planned to kill Shahul
Hameed.
In order to escape from Abdul Vahaab, Shahul Hameed went to Chennai. He also arranged for a massive
public meeting, presided over by Hyder Ali, District Secretary of the TMMK. At the meeting, Hyder Ali
criticised the police.
The police responded by arresting Shahul Hameed and filing two false complaints against him.
Shahul Hameed was later released on conditional bail.

On 1 April 2007, a child and a friend of victim Arun Kumar passed away in Karugampathur village. When the
two bodies were taken to the cremation ground, an oral squabble started between Arun Kumar, Beemsingh,
Sankar, Kanthan, and Gunasekaran. The group ended up exchanging blows and attacking each other with
big sticks.
